Hard to get in to see him, harder to get him to even call you back. The staff is terrible, they are the absolute worst. The only good thing about this doctor is he provides free valet parking, so if you want to go to lunch in Beverly Hills, this is a good service to use. This is definitely the best medical experience I've had from first meeting through surgery through release. Dr Penenberg is literally "the best" and that extends to his staff, his assistants, and all of Cedars Sinai. Everything went without a glitch he and his staff took the time I needed to spend with me, to listen and to explain. The surgical team at CS was awesome and everything went very comfortably and on schedule. I must have had a team of 8 tending to me. I was up walking two hours after total hip replacement. Now three days later I'm walking without assistance, without any pain other than normal surgical area pain, and with full strength and a normal gait. Plan accordingly. If you like hanging out in a doctors office lobby well past your scheduled appointment time - you will love this place. If you value your time you will hate it. You will be seen at least an hour to two hours late when you show up for your consultation. Last time I waited for a full two hours in the waiting room after my confirmed appointment time had passed. This time i waited for well over 90 minutes to be seen. He must overbook and would rather keep everyone waiting then book according to what he can manage. For a 10 minute consultation you will be there at least 2 hours. And of course you must be there 15 minutes early to check in. I wonder what would happen if you showed up an hour or two late for your appointment? This excessive wait is very tough for anyone let alone an elderly person. read more

After a traumatic hip fracture and emergency pinning surgery, my hip was not healing and I had been non-weight bearing for 4 months. Dr. Penenberg had operated on my 90 year old mother-in-law with fantastic results. I went to see him. He took a great deal of time with me, and did my surgery at Cedars. Such a huge mistake choosing Dr Brad Penneberg to do my revised knee replacement! Worst experience! Now one leg is shorter than the other. His comment was just get a lift for your shoe. Not to mention, arriving for my 10am surgery and waiting over 4 hours for my surgery. Also, spinal medication ended up with my having paralysis on my right leg for 24hrs, so scary. I went to several Surgeons, some at St Johns and Cedars before deciding to have Dr Penenberg do my knee replacement. I am very active and running my my own company and did not have much downtime to recover. I could not be happier about my choice. I was out of the hospital in one day. They had scheduled home physical therapy to come to my house but I was able to cancel them after the first appointment. I was shocked that I was able to walk without any crutch or cane and was able to do stairs right away. I did have to wait 45 minutes for first appt but He was with me for almost 30 min answering all my questions. If he does this for every patient it makes sense why he runs Behind. Follow up appointments I scheduled first thing in morning so waiting was much less He is the best surgeon and I am so glad I picked me to do my surgery. I hope I don't need another joint replaced but if I do some day, I will definitely have him do it. read more

The doctor's care is nonexistent. I went to him because my GP recommended him so highly. I lowered my guard despite noticing from the initial consultation that he spent a few minutes reading my paperwork, then without a word left the room. I thought he was coming back with x-rays and to explain what is wrong with me and how he would approach the surgery. Instead the nurse rushed in to tell me to leave. I protested that nothing had been discussed or explained. She told me he's already with another patient. I stupidly rationalized to myself that he has done so many of these surgeries he can do it with his eyes closed. That was not the outcome. I recently learned from another doctor that he did not take into account my scoliosis and therefor measured wrong the hip alignment. The stem is crooked and the muscles are constantly pulling against this ridged implant trying to correct the mistake. It's painful and futile. I cry often because I can't bare the constant flair up of deep penetrating pain. You wait 3 hours for a 4 minute appointment. He barely talks. All I now I learned from other doctors like one hip being 1/2 " higher then the other. I have to ware orthopedic shoes now. He had so many opportunities to help me. He saw me come in weeks after week for months without the least regard for my pain. When he wouldn't take the time to read the report of the MRI he ordered I knew it was time to move on.I can't walk bare feet because of the instant pain it caused my other hip and lower back. The chronic ware and tear is going to cause more health issues if it doesn't get corrected. I have to considerably bend one knee to walk with a limp which is creating a huge imbalance that's taking a toll on my whole body. The surgery failed miserably. I was told by most doctors that redoing the surgery is not an option. It's easy for them to say "just learn to live with it". They are not the ones debilitated and out of work. The groin muscles are completely contracted. I can't walk or sit without immense pain. It took very long to get off the walker and I never healed. The entire right leg is irritated by chronic nerve pain and muscle spasm from hip to toe. I spend days lying in bed with legs elevated. If I go for a swim it takes a whole week for the horrible muscle spasm to subside. I should have long ago rebuilt my muscles but whatever form of exercise I do, it only makes the inflammation far worse. I can't walk my dogs or on the smallest of incline. I envy the person I pay to walk my dogs. It was my bonding time with them. This is no life. I'm surviving , not living. I can honestly say I was far better off before surgery when my hips were aligned and I wasn't feeling a chronic irritation in my hips and thigh like my whole body wants to reject the entire implant. I can feel every inch of it all the time irritating my tissues like crazy. I'm so irritable having to live in this state of mind and body.He rushes through everything and post op care was non existent. There is a whole system of care that's wrong with his practice. I have to learn from other doctors everything that was done wrong because he won't say a word even a year and a half later. He ordered an MRI 2 months post op than couldn't take the time to read it. He glanced at the report for 2 seconds and declared everything normal. I underlined all the paragraphs that said otherwise on my copy and showed it to him. Not a word left his mouth as usual when confronted by direct fact I would get silence, that's all. He gets lots of patients because of his reputation. That is the only thing he really cares about, keeping the busyness flowing. I wish I never had been referred to him. He took my mobility and my life. I haven't seen a doctor be so blatantly driven by finance. I feel like I got assembly line surgery. I really don't understand why he has such a great reputation. I posted my experience for others to be warned, not out of maliciousness. I simply presented my experience to be learned from. I pray that I will find someone to do a great revision surgery that will restore my mobility and life. read more

I had a total hip replacement 3 years ago and I'm only reminded of that when I set off alarms going through a security check point. I have total range of motion in my hip and do not experience any pain. I was in and out of the hospital the same day and physical therapy was quick and effective. His office is disorganized, cancels appointments, but does not tell you. So, we drove two hours there and two hours home and husband lost a day's wages. I'm not happy. It is two months and one week now. I was sent home same day as surgery, drugged to the hilt. Second night home I ended up in emergency room due to complete shut down of digestive system and fainting. Then moved to a different hospital for two days. Pain was unbelievable. I don't know how this surgery will turn out, but I am still in pain. I expected much better, given Dr.Penenberg's reputation. Great surgery and fast healing after total hip replacement. They use Cedars which is an excellent facility. Staff is very nice. The only reason for not 5 stars is that there can be a long wait so schedule smart do first thing in the morning. Also they only use their own xray which is done right there, so at first it feels weird.... they didn't care about my mri and bone tests I brought in. Anyway disregard the little stuff and focus on the fact he knows what he's doing which is why you're there in the first place. Also buy and schedule all your rehab equipment like walker, cane and ice machine before your surgery. They have some new method they're working out and your stuff may be hard to get through them so do it yourself and you're all set. Was out of hospital same day and walking the next so that says it a lot. read more

First of all I have to thank him for saving me three times from excruciating pain. I don't even have the words to Thank him and his attentive staff enough! Dr Penenberg performed a total right knee replacement for me, and then a total left knee replacement surgery. Those two surgeries were about 9 months apart which was due to a fall. I couldn't walk more than about 100 ft with excruciating pain that kept me up every night. It has been about seven years later and my knees are both perfect and pain free. Unfortunately I suffer from osteoarthritis and Dr Penenberg just performed a total left hip replacement for me roughly six weeks ago and I am completely PAIN free, and I am forever grateful to him. I'm even wearing about a three inch heels to work! Dr Penenberg 's extensive research and knowledge is as impressive as it is profound. While my aunt's surgery went well, the follow up visits have been horrible. I don't think Dr. Penenberg understands how to schedule his patients. People who had 2pm appointments are still waiting to see him, now 5pm on 4/1/16. A few patients have left because they could not wait the three hours to see him. Perhaps he needs to fire his scheduling assistant or office manager and add more days to see patients for follow ups. This is really unacceptable. read more

Dr. Peneneberg is THE PREMIER in his field. There is no one better qualified to do knees and hips. My mother had hip replacement done in Iran in 1979. There were complications that were addressed in London in 1980, but were never fixed right. Of course she never knew this until years later when she started to have major pains. After consulting with several orthos, we heard everything from "nothing can be done" to "we can TRY to fix it but run the risk of further damaging your bones and causing 1 leg to be longer than the other." I was told by another Physician that I needed hip replacement surgery, he gave me two minutes and was gone! Forget that! So I changed my insurance in order fo go to Physician of my choice so I did my due diligence for two months and chose Dr. Pennenberg and it was one of the best choices I have ever made! Dr.Pennenberg office staff were the most kind and professional answer questions and putting me a ease. Dr Pennenberg gave me all the time I need explaining the procedure and answering my questions. The procedure was done at Ceders Sini, that place is amazing! The surgery staff is great! I couldn't not have been taken care of better! They even had a turkey sandwich ready for me after surgery!!! The Physical Therapist had me walking by the late afternoon and I was released that night! My post op office appointment with Dr.Pennenberg is where he showed me pics of the new implant and how he shaved it down to fit the curve of my leg for a perfect fit! The man is amazing! It's funny, we all say... Oh I've got the best Doctor! Well when you really have the best doctor you actually hear it from everyone, especially other physicians. That was exactly my experience with Dr. Penenberg, anyone who knew of a surgeon that specialized in hip or knee replacement including other doctors to a person all said the same thing. You're in good hands, he's the best. These type of comments are all well and good, but I still had to have hip surgery, which was a bit unnerving. Meeting with Dr. Penenberg, put a lot of that apprehension aside, he made me feel extremely confident of the outcome and with his skill as a surgeon. He has several patents for the replacement devices he used to replace my hip. Knowing this gave me added confidence that he was involved in every aspect of this surgery including design. I left the hospital the same day as the surgery. The surgery and my recovery has gone without incident, I am 2 and a half months out after the surgery. I am amazed everyday how good and pain free I feel. He has truly given me back a quality of life and movement that I haven't had for over 3 years and didn't know if I'd ever get back. 15 months after my second Total Hip Replacement (THR) I am very unhappy the results from my 2 THR surgeries done by Dr. Peneberg. What I had hoped would restart my life has left me sadly disappointed. Both my replacement hips hurt and I feel my life is over. I can no longer hike or bike or do anything active. My hips hurt too much. Dr. Penenberg did my first THR August 2018: He got the leg length wrong (too long) and I had to wear a lift in my other shoe. Dr. Penenberg did my second THR Dec 2018 . Both my hips hurt . Dr Penenberg said, in my post surgery visits, that my new hips looked fine in the X-rays ; but they still hurt and continue to ache (like before surgeries) if I try to walk any distance. Dr. Penenberg has not been helpful. He does no follow up. He never showed up in the hospital after either of my 2 surgeries. It is very difficult to get an appointment with him and then when I complain about my hip pain, he looks at me like I don't know what I am talking about. After all, the X-Rays are perfect! read more

Dr. Penenberg performed a revision full knee replacement following a failed partial knee replacement. His estimated pain levels and recovery time were 100% accurate. A year later, I am able to dance, cycle, swim (even breaststroke!) and do a full squat. After 35 years, I actually jogged a little. I highly recommend him. read more

Brad Penenberg is far and away the most gifted surgeon I have ever known - and I've had a lot of surgeries. My recovery from double hip surgery was nothing short of a miracle. Walking with no walker after 4 days, driving in 2 weeks, very little pain, and in 3 weeks doing almost everything. Completely self sufficient. I know people who went to other surgeons with nowhere near my results. Honestly, he is an extremely talented surgeon. Sure, you have to wait in his waiting room. Everyone complains about it. But think of it this way...you really only need to see him for the preop, and maybe 1-2 post ops. So bring a good book, watch tv, or take a nap. He's SO worth the wait. I just passed my one year anniversary since Dr Penenberg gave me two new hips in one operation. I have to say it was one of the best medical experiences I ever had from the first meeting, through the procedure and my recovery. After my first year I almost never think about my hips. This can seem like a miracle. But this is the state if the art of science. One of the best parts was that Dr Penenberg talks to you as long as you need on the first visit. Every question we had was answered in a way that we could understand. Because of this you may have to wait for him to get to you. But the office staff let us know that this was the case because he likes to spend whatever time is needed with the patient. Dr. Penenberg is a good surgeon but has terrible practice management. They don't respect the patient's time and cram the waiting room full of folks for hours. On follow-up visits you may get 5+ minutes and if you forget to ask something and contact the office two hours after your appointment they do not respond. He rushed from the room and forgot to give me the referral to a rheumatologist...2 follow-up calls and two faxes and a week later no call from their office. Very poor...... read more

I had hip replacement surgery 7 months ago. I am 79 years old and a former ballet dance. Tempting fate but -- I have to say it went perfectly. I was bone on bone for a lot of years and in pain but I never stopped dancing. After the surgery I was up and moving with minimal discomfort in the two weeks. And back to full activity at 3 months - dancing, pilates, walking. Dr. Penenberg was highly recommended by other physically active people. The doctor spent all the time I needed to make an informed decision. I saw one other recommended doctor who told me I would never do splits again. He did not seem to understand dancers or athletes. At Penenberg Land - it's a looooooooooon sit in the waiting room even with an appointment but once you're in the staff is caring and competent and and so nice. Dr. Penenberg is not rushed or pushy. He makes certain you're comfortable and reassured about the proceedure. By the way - with Medicare and a secondary I paid not one penny. A physical therapy came to my home 6 times over 2 weeks. I was delivered a raised toilet sear, walker and cane - which I was grateful that I never had to use any of them. On Medicare I went to an out PT facility for another 2 months. I have been a patient of Dr. Brad Penenberg for 18 years. He has performed two hip replacement surgeries for me. My left THR in 2001 was so successful that I would not have considered anyone but Dr. Penenberg do the right THR, which was done 90 days ago. My dad needed a really complicated hip replacement. He doesn't live in LA, and searched all over the country for someone great to do it. He tried Hospital for Special Surgery in NYC, and several top hospitals in Chicago. Most surgeons said it couldn't be done. One told him that he would require too much care before and after the surgery and wouldn't do it. Over and over again, he was refused, despite the fact that he's been in excruciating pain for years. Finally, a friend of mine who's a doctor at Cedars recommended Dr. Penenberg, and thank goodness she did. First of all, Dr. Penenberg's demeanor is so wonderful. He's thorough, not an alarmist, and really takes the time to listen and explain everything. Remarkably, he takes Medicare (!!) which was a huge shock and a lovely surprise. My dad's case required a lot of extra care, and he and his staff took the time to put everything together--finding an outstanding team of ancillary physicians (hematologist and cardiologist) to work with him on an overall plan for before, during and after surgery. I had extensive communication with his office, and every single person on his staff was kind, patient, and went out of his or her way to be helpful, answering emails and phone calls promptly and making sure we had all the information we needed. The surgery was about 4 hours, and after, Dr. Peneberg came out to the waiting room to explain everything to my mom and me. The surgery was a success. A man who'd been told over and over again by some of the best doctors in the country that the surgery couldn't be done now has a new hip and is finally out of pain. Post-surgery, Dr. Penenberg was very attentive, clearly wanting to make sure that his patient had a successful recovery. (And I'll add here that the nursing at Cedar Sinai was outstanding as well, and we felt comfortable that he was being well cared for.) I can't say enough about this doctor. My orthopedist told me I should have a knee replacement. He no longer did surgery. He told me to make an appointment with Dr.Penenberg and gave my x rays to take across the hall to Dr. Penenberg's . My appointment was with Dr. Penenberg. I never saw him. A Dr. Boling introduced himself and said even tho' I brought my x rays he needed new ones. After x rays were taken he started explaining my choices. I asked when I would see Dr. Penenberg. He said Dr. Penenberg was too busy to see me. But I have an appointment I replied. He told me I could wait, but he said I would have to wait 2 or 3 hours, and even then he still might be too busy and might not be able to see me. I took my xrays and left.
