"You can trust your car to the man who wears the star." So went one of the most enduring slogans in…read moremarketing history for the Texas Oil Company "Texaco" founded in 1902 and largely subsumed into Chevron through merger in 2001. I know it's tough to be nostalgic for any oil company as gasoline prices are poised to zoom past $5 a gallon nationally but it's remarkable how ubiquitous the red star was across all 50 states only to virtually disappear overnight. I once had a meeting in their oak-paneled headquarters in Westchester County, NY sometime in the late 1990s with carpet so thick all sound was deadened to the point of crypt-like silence. An energy company cocooned in an opulent, zero energy space... maybe their demise shouldn't have been a surprise after all. It's still weird to see a hold out station featuring their logo (even though it's just a disguised Chevron) but every time I see their red star I'm reminded of the "Sky Chief" fire helmet my father scored for me back in the day with six fill-ups. It was obviously much cooler than the glassware, dinner plating or encyclopedia loyalty promotions begging for attention across the street at Arco, Sinclair, Mobil or Esso. Yes kids, before Google there were these things called encyclopedias. After I finish here I'm going down to the basement to dig it out, original box and all. In the meantime, I'll just wander down to the ATM and retrieve $200 for my next tank of gas. Good times for sure.
