So went one of the most enduring slogans in…read moremarketing history for the Texas Oil Company "Texaco" founded in 1902 and largely subsumed into Chevron through merger in 2001. I know it's tough to be nostalgic for any oil company as gasoline prices are poised to zoom past $5 a gallon nationally but it's remarkable how ubiquitous the red star was across all 50 states only to virtually disappear overnight. I once had a meeting in their oak-paneled headquarters in Westchester County, NY sometime in the late 1990s with carpet so thick all sound was deadened to the point of crypt-like silence. An energy company cocooned in an opulent, zero energy space... maybe their demise shouldn't have been a surprise after all. It's still weird to see a hold out station featuring their logo (even though it's just a disguised Chevron) but every time I see their red star I'm reminded of the "Sky Chief" fire helmet my father scored for me back in the day with six fill-ups. It was obviously much cooler than the glassware, dinner plating or encyclopedia loyalty promotions begging for attention across the street at Arco, Sinclair, Mobil or Esso. Yes kids, before Google there were these things called encyclopedias. After I finish here I'm going down to the basement to dig it out, original box and all. In the meantime, I'll just wander down to the ATM and retrieve $200 for my next tank of gas. Good times for sure.

Made an appt., drove in bright and early for a 20,000 mile service and was made to feel as though there was nothing that really needed to be done. They refused to even check my CVT transmission fluid, due to the fact that it was deemed unnecessary. I have a slight vibration at take off, which is very common with CVT transmissions and could be the start of a problem and was told that this was a characteristic of a CVT. Well, no shit, that's why I have my concerns. Needless to say, it was not addressed. I also had an issue with my front end making a crackling noise when coming to a stop after the vehicle has been sitting all night, then goes away until it sits again for a period of time. I was told that the brakes were fine. Excuse me, but I don't remember saying shit about the brakes, I said the front end makes the noise. Needless to say, it still makes the crackling sound. $500 for an oil change, tire rotation and supposedly the brake fluid was changed. Apparently at 20,000 miles on and all wheel drive vehicle, there is a lot more that needs to be checked and serviced. I was made to feel as though the vehicle didn't even need to be brought in and my other concerns which should have been covered fully under warranty were not even considered. Apparently, dealerships are now working on commission, so the money is being made on repair work and suggested services that are exclusively out of pocket by the consumer. My only option is to find a dealer alt. and I have done so through my job. they deal with the factory directly and they have the best mechanics money can pay for. I'm very lucky to have access to them and should have used them in the first place, but I ever so hate the "I know and work for this company" card trick(which is legitimate), but when it comes to a vehicle I'm still paying for, I'll gladly swallow my pride as opposed to bleeding out cash to people who simply don't care. Seems as though sales and service are no longer separate. I'll pay the businesses that know that repeat customers bring in far more money than the ones who get taken in, never to return to be taken in again.
