The owner of G's Cheesesteaks made a very generous offer, free cheesestake sandwiches to New Yorkers following the Knicks' sweep. Watching the game on tv, I would hear the commentator mentioning local promotions for basketball fans in Philadelphia cheering for missed free throws, translating to free fried chicken. Well, New York fans received the offer of free cheesesteaks. I don't dare call these "Philly" cheesesteaks. We hear enough claims of New York Pizza coming from some unlikely places. The lines were long but moved along briskly once the doors opened today at 11am. It has been decades since I last had a cheesesteak while in Philly. Working from faint memories, this cheesesteak compares favorably. Nice steak slices with cheese and onions. None of that Cheez Wiz here, this is New Yawk! I am one happy Knicks fan.

I love Philly cheese steak & I am no expert on them but this is my take on G's cheesesteak. Everyone thinks a good Philly cheesesteak starts with the meat, but I think it starts with the bread. Their bread is freshly baked daily which is a major plus. I always go for the sesame hero because it adds just the right amount of texture and a subtle nutty flavor that takes the whole sandwich to another level. The steak was chopped perfectly--tender, juicy, and packed into every bite. The Cooper Cheese was the real MVP: creamy, rich, and melted into the meat like it was born to be there. I like to keep it simple, no wiz cheese or any additional toppings. The only thing I would say (maybe it's an option) is that it got too salty (for my taste buds), so maybe next time I'll ask if they can skip the salt on the meat, since the cheese itself is salty enough. You're thinking the food is too salty and you still give it 5 stars? Yes, I think it's still worth the 5 stars.

For those blissfully…read moreunaware, Crown is a chain that typically locates itself in more urban environments such as Brooklyn, Northern NJ Cities, etc. Seeing one opening in the suburbs of Brick was both unexpected and incredibly welcome (though my diet may think otherwise). I'm a huge fan of the Asbury Park location, which might be the best fried chicken I've ever had, so I rushed over here 1 day after they opened to give it a shot. A fairly diverse menu is available - as expected of most CFC locations, all of which was priced reasonably; a 3 piece fried chicken meal with fries can be had for $8.99 at the time of this writing, which frankly makes me wonder why anyone would go to a fast food joint. The quality of the food was great; my fried chicken was nice and moist inside, with their outstanding breading on top. I've also had a chicken sandwich here that was pretty tasty, and again - a bargain for lunch. Ambiance / seating is as expected for a small place like this; a few tables for pop-ins, but mostly designed as a to-go place (think average Chinese takeout locations). There's a few growing pains - my gyro platter had fairly soggy rice and not enough sear on the meat (but tasted fine otherwise), and the chicken could have used maybe a tiny bit more fryer time to really crisp up the breading. Neither were really show-stoppers, and I chalked it up to having literally just opened. There was noticable improvement from day 2 to day 6, so I'm pretty confident these little bumps will get ironed out. Oh. One more thing. GET THE BANANA PUDDING. That stuff is addictive! I'll be back for sure.
