A boyne highlands snowboard instructor "JOSH" struck my wife while she was strapping in near the top of a green hill as he was training a child how to snowboard. He wasnt looking where he was going while facing uphill and ran right into her. The sharp back edge of his board cut her wide up open and left a deep bruise. It ruined our whole trip to michigan. Afterwards he refused to get snow patrol and was more interested in continuing his training session rather than helping my wife who was on the ground crying and in immense pain. He left and I had to help her myself even though she couldnt put any weight on her right leg. Hey patella tendon might be torn and she may never be able to snowboard again. I THINK THESE MORONS SAW SHES BLACK AND TREATED HER LIKE SHE SHOULDNT BE THERE. 2 days later and I cant get Boyne highlands to call me back or send me their insurance they have for their instructors. AVOID THIS PLACE COMPLETELY IF YOU THINK THE BOYNE MANAGEMENT WILL TAKE CARE OF THE DAMAGE THEY CAUSE YOU. read more

My wife and I have been coming up here for over 40 years, skiing with our now grown children and love this place. We recently came up for a week of golf and had a great experience, the staff was great from check in (Paige was very helpful and friendly) to food service. We stayed at the main lodge in one of the recently renovated rooms (they did a great job on the updates...) which was clean and bright. Overall, a great experience and would have given it a 5 star rating, but upon check out we noticed a $50 'change fee' on the folio summary. When I checked out and turned in the room keys, I asked about the charge and was informed that when I changed a golf tee time (we dropped one day of golf, which I had done less than 24 hours after making the reservation) I was informed there would be a fee. My response was I did not remember being informed of the fee and the response from the person at the 'welcome center' was "we record every phone conversation and we'll review this and get back to you". WOW... what a response, I'm being recorded to have it played back to validate a change fee and not for "quality purposes" as they state in the automated reservation call bank. I love this place but this has left a really bad impression and will have me looking elsewhere for future lodging/golf/skiing... sorry to leave Boyne but this is a deal breaker for me! read more

Used to be the best ski resort in the state but they are far removed from that status today. Attended over NYE and while weather not doing any favors, the aesthetic and snow experience was TERRIBLE. 2 chair lifts open, 3 runs. Went over to nubs nob the 2nd half of the day (bc Boyne sucked so bad) and the entire resort is covered with snow. All lifts basically open, 15+ runs. Not sure why nubs is able to make snow so much more effectively but Boyne just doesn't care. They are happy to gouge you on every aspect while focusing on profit over the experience of the guests. Truly the worst skiing experience I have EVER had in northern Michigan. The people running this place need a reality check, maybe it starts with going access the street and taking some notes from the other resorts. Don't waste your time or money and STAY AWAY from this place at all costs. read more

very fun resort overall. They did pretty good with a terrible snow year last year and kept most of the hill open. It is expensive but the season pass for highlands and mountain is definitely worth it. I will say that food at the bottom is way too expensive, I think it was nearly $30 for some chicken, fries, and a soft drink so pack a sandwich. As far as skiing goes the place is pretty nice, a little lacking in expert terrain (and what they do have is mostly traverses with a short drop) but tons of green and blue cruisers. the new bubble six person lift is super nice as well (great for wind, snow, or rain), and crowds aren't that bad. one problem last year was that challenger lift was closed for most of the season. not a huge deal as you can get to the runs from Heather, but requires a flat traverse at the top and an uphill one at the bottom, making the best black runs on the hill kinda tough to lap. read more

It was my first time here and I really enjoyed it! I stopped in on a weekday so I could get the lay of the land without having a huge crowd on the slopes. I was impressed with the variety of runs, as well as the multitude of lifts. It provides a very well spread out atmosphere. Manage to stop at one of the warming stations but it did not have any water or cups for anyone to hydrate. I chalked it up to being on a weekday. Way back when I was a counselor at a nearby overnight camp this was the "fancy" place for a night away from the kids and a hot shower. When looking to book a hotel in the area I had my suspicions about boyne since it's been many years since I've visited and my taste in hotels has changed just a bit since then. However, couldn't beat the price in comparison to bay harbor so booked it and hoped for the best. My 7 year old daughter thought Boyne was just the coolest. A zipline, putt putt, nightly s'mores, movie/popcorn, pool/hot tub outside of our room...all her favorites and more! I was glad she was happy, but found myself wishing I splurged on bay harbor. The staff was friendly, there was lots for kids to do and it's conveniently located near Harbor Springs (10 min drive). However the hotel itself is so dated and has a weird musty smell. On the last day I decided I was better off without a shower because the thought of another boyne shower grossed me out...and to think this is where I used to escape for a hot shower! I hope to send my kids to the same overnight camp so there very well may be more stays at boyne in my future, but I'll likely be comparing to other hotels/house rentals in the area first. read more

The resort itself has a lot to offer in skiing. It's the only reason I even gave it two stars. The staff at both bars are lacking to say the least. The manager at the Zoo bar was pushy and ridiculous. I got hurt and was waiting for my partner to join me at the bar to have lunch. She made it clear I could not stay unless I ordered something and continued to. I have no problem ordering a drink but there is literally nowhere on the resort that is made just to hangout and wait on people skiing. They make it very difficult for anyone unable to ski. After ordering drinks and food I was again made to feel unwelcome when staff came and made me move so they could accommodate someone else. Lying and saying they needed to move tables. Then they came back and said they suddenly had a reservation that had not existed an hour ago. They moved me to another table that could have accommodated the other people. They wanted what they wanted. Customer care is not their priority. The manager made it clear that they wanted the table for other ppl even though I made it clear I'd be hanging out throughout the day. Them lying and being pushy makes me not want to come back again. Big disappointment especially coming from Boyne Mountain yesterday... Which was amazing. Highland will now be on my future Michigan adventure list! read more

It's outdated, but comfortable, safe and clean. We had three condos that slept 24 and could have slept more. Two of the condos were very musty. I'll bring a candle next time. Not a big deal. Bathrooms were circa 1980 and the drains showed it (really slow to drain). Golf in the area was amazing. Location was great. Close to the quaint towns of Harbor Springs, Boyne, and Petoskey. Only 15 minutes or so to plenty of shopping, restaurants, gas stations, wineries, coffee shops, and a casino! They have a lodge with hotel rooms in addition to condos. During non COVID times they have a spa. There is also a really nice coffee shop in the lodge (somewhat limited hours), but they have a nice selection of coffee drinks, beers, wines, ciders, packaged sandwiches, snacks, ice cream treats, waters, and really fancy souvenirs. The restaurant has limited hours (as of this review) and I've had heard the food is ok. I just had a cocktail and it was... ok! Service was absolutely horrible. My husband is the golfer. I just go along for the fun and scenery. We've stayed at Boyne resorts a few times and I can't say I have been disappointed. I look forward to some renovations and visiting, again! read more

We stayed here for 5 nights with a golf package. 5 stars for the golf! We played Bay Harbor, Arthur Hills, Donald Ross Memorial, and the Heather, all the courses were in great shape and lots of fun. The first three were our favorites. We stayed in an Alpine Village 3 bedroom 3 bathroom condo. It had a lodge type of feel and at approximately 2400 square feet, it was very spacious. The beds were comfortable and the main floor had an open kitchen/dining/living room and 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. The upstairs had a bedroom, bathroom, and loft area with a queen sleeper sofa. The unit was located on the second level and there are A LOT of stairs! No housekeeping unless requested and that worked fine for us as we were barely in the condo. It's nothing fancy but suited our needs. We tried the breakfast buffet and had dinner at the lounge, both were just ok. There are a ton of activities for all ages and a HUGE hot tub. read more

We wanted somewhere to stay that wasn't $500/ night like some of the places super close to water in Michigan. We ended up booking here. A few days before our arrival we got a call telling us that our 1 bedroom room didn't have AC so they were upgrading us to a 2 bedroom condo in Alpine Village and they hoped it was ok. It's been FABULOUS! The condos are well kept even though they are a bit older. Ours had a full kitchen that was well stocked with pots and pans so we cooked to save money on eating out. It had a washer and dryer and they even left laundry soap for us. That helped us not go home with 87 loads of laundry to do. The patios are fabulous and peaceful and we've loved our time here. The main lodge is probably the most in need of maintenance or repair but the staff is all friendly & nice. They have a schedule for the week that lists out the activities and the adventure center is helpful with planning things. We took the chairlift (needs repair in my opinion), the Segway tour, rode the paddle boats and played cornhole & ladders on the lawn. At the top of the mountain there's a great view of the bay and the scenery is amazing. Overall, we definitely feel the value was here and it was less than an hour to get to Petoskey, Mackinaw City and Indian River. We enjoyed day trips to all those places and loved coming back here at night to relax. read more

Kris took on our four kids (aged 8, 8, 6 and 6) and by the end of two days of lessons (2 hours each day), Kris had all four from basically no ski experience to going on chair lifts, making turns and able to stop on any terrain. Really expensive and really overrated. There are other options in the state that are far better and half the price. Positives: A lot of accommodations Lift Lines were quick and staff there was friendly Nice views from the top Some challenging ski runs Negatives: Very expensive, one and a half times Crystal Mountain and 2 and a half times Caberfae Peaks. Snow condition was pretty much the worst of any place I have been to ever. Very spread out and had to do a lot of poling on skis or take skis off and walk. Several lifts were not operating making it more difficult to get around the area All but 4 of the runs were closed by 5pm, despite that our ticket was until 9pm. Everyone had to funnel on the same lift and do the same run. There was some sort of ski competition going on so at least 1/4 of the slopes were closed for that, all day. The ski rental was expensive and staff had no idea what they were doing, when they brought out the gear for me, I told them flat out it was the wrong size, and rather than get me the write skis and boots, they argued with me and the guy said "Sir, have you ever even skied before?" and I have been skiing since before he was born. I tried on the equipment and tried it out on the slopes, then after a half hour I was back inside getting the right size and that took 45 minutes. As a result of most of the of delays in equipment rental and the shut down of slopes beginning at 4pm, and the substantial amount of polling around, I only got in 12 runs. TWELVE! It cost me about $130 not including the gas to get there. Thats pretty expensive if you ask me. I was so annoyed by this place. The only way I would go back would be if I was invited by a group of friends or family and they had decided, and then I would still try and talk them into a different spot. My trip to Boyne in Feb 2021 incorporated 2 other locations, Crystal Mountain the day before and Caberfae Peaks the day after. I found both to be superior ski experiences for substantially less money. read more

Had a great time at the Bike Park! We stopped for an afternoon to ride during our road trip back to Colorado. We ride bike parks often and were very pleasantly surprised with the offerings. Great and thoughtful progression from Greens to Blacks. This is our second winter staying at Boyne Highlands Resort (Main Lodge). We had 5 adults, 1 teenage, a 2 year old, and a pair of 1 year olds!. There is on site childcare, great breakfast, pizza at the Slope Side Lounge, and the most pleasant Staff!. I am not sure who is managing this property.... But they are doing a fabulous job! Lots of Staff to help as needed, always a hello, opening doors, just such a great experience... The outdoor pool is toasty. We loved our Wednesday - Sunday trip.... The skiing was great! read more

For skiers - The bad: - Chairlifts are positioned poorly so that you have to cross against slope traffic to reach some lifts, which can get dicey on busy days. There are also some long flat areas that require speed in order to reach the chair. Maps are important to have if you are not familiar with the layout. - Inconsistant service (some folks were just plain rude) - Expensive - Lodge food not very good (but they allow bringing your own, which I recommend) The lodge at the top closes 45 minuetes before the lift (north side) - that fact is not well marked. We found out when they shut the counter gate in our faces! Lots of people were waiting with us. Add to that, the soda machines were out of order. Seemed pretty weak when we paid top dollar holiday rates between Christmas and New Year. The Highlands offer a good variety of trails that are of various lengths and difficulties. I feel the slopes are best suited for beginners and intermediates. Heck I saw kids wedging down a black diamond without falling! My only complaint about the skiing area is the hassle of accessing certain trails. The lower areas are very flat and are hard to cross. In order to access areas at either end of the park, you're forced to take every lift on the way. The same goes for when you want to return the main lodge. During my holiday visit, the staff at the resort and park were in great spirits. Even the ones manning the lifts and the temperature was in the single digits! They were especially friendly and had a great attitude. Overall this is a great place to have a relaxing winter outing. read more

We have been coming to Boyne Highlands since I was a kiddo (not telling you my current age) and it never disappoints. This Bavarian Village is a little out of date but that is part of its magic. We stayed in a condo in Heather Highlands which worked out well for 5 people as it had two bathrooms! The staff could not have been more helpful from registration to housekeeping to the ski valet! I especially loved the rental guys because they helped me get my boots off lol! The slopes are well groomed and you can ski until 9:00 pm if you can brave the cold! If you would rather...there are two outdoor heated pools to relax your weary bones. On-site eating includes the Slopeside Lounge and Zoo Bar. Additionally you can get pizza or cook in the condo. Big plus is onsite equipment rental and ski valet..no need to schlep your skies around! There is also a Pro Shop if you forgot something or need something new! Love coming to this beautiful resort! When we arrived we signed my 5 yo godson up for ski lessons... we originally had him signed up for the whole day but when we went to drop him off, it was completely disorganized everyone was just standing around and the instructors were just standing around talking to each other instead of directing the two dozen or so parents on the fact that their kids were to ride the magic carpet by themselves to the top of the hill to be tested then they would be out in a group that was fitting their abilities. Each class had 6-8 kids per instructor... that's waaay to many for one instructor. My friend was so annoyed she was threatening to take him out of school altogether. She did end up keeping him in school for a half day... but as I watched the instructor, with that many kids, he didn't have much control over the class... I recommend nubs knob for lessons last year we went there and they were great with him. Hills was fine a bit icy but that cannot really be controlled. read more

Even though I love the steep runs over at the Mountain, there is varied enough terrain at the Highlands to keep me happy. My hubby is an expert skier who eats double black diamonds for breakfast, and he actually seems to prefer the Highlands, because the crowds are smaller. We are both technical skiers, and like the chance to practice on easier runs. I can happily fine-tune my turns all morning, have lunch, then play on the green runs all afternoon until they close the lifts and tell us to go home. I agree with the reviewer TC that it takes more work than some might want to expend to traverse over to the next lift, but with some planning (stay high on the hill) and good gliding skills, you can get to the other side of the ski area without having to take every single lift. Look at a Boyne Highlands trail map while I give you a tour: You would usually park at the main lot and start out from the main day lodge. The FREE BEGINNER'S AREA is right outside the cafeteria. If you want more of a challenge you'll need a lift ticket. Use the Camelot lift to boost yourself over to the Valley lift. There are some green runs off that lift, but I usually stick to Tournament Pass and the black runs. If the slow ride up the Valley lift is beginning to suck the heat out of your body, take a right off the lift and go down Kath Run, then take the first left below Nastar and make your way over to the Heather Express, the biggest and fastest lift at the resort. Intermediate skiers would take Little John and then end up at the Amy's lift. There is some nice intermediate skiing off Amy's. Between Heather Express and Amy's is the Challenger area, including the TERRAIN PARK. Challenger gives you the longest steep runs at the Highlands. North Challenger is usually groomed but South Challenger sometimes gets soft bumps. On windy days, it's worth the slow ride on the Interconnect lift over to North Face. The green runs are out of the wind. The snow on Black Diamond Glade usually stays pretty soft, because it never gets very sunny there. Leslie's Quest might have some great snow in that first big left turn, but it's kinda boring after that. There are a couple of short slots that get bumps, if you stay near the treeline below the North Face lift and then cut left over to Leslie's Quest. On clear days, you can see the Mackinac Bridge from the North Face lift and the deck outside the North Peak warming hut/cafeteria. There is some glade skiing at the Highlands. Check the trail map. But be ready to be whipped across the face by those skinny little beech branches. Helmet and goggles mandatory! Sure, we'd prefer to ski out west, but if we stay in Michigan, we can get season passes for the Boyne resorts and ski as much as we want all winter, versus one glorious week out west. read more

What an awesome day! The previous days 8" was all gRoomed in and the sunshine made it even better. The multiple chairlifts spread out the crowd nicely and you can basically make a run and jump back on the lift with minimal waits. The slopes are great for Michigan, but the facility has seen better days and is in need of an update. The restrooms are clean but crusty although the staff is excellent. The ski shop is super and know their stuff. The concessions food is really bad, junk food and has very few nutritious options. Still geared for the teenage diet of the late 70's-80's just like the recycled music they play. I will be back but will look around to see the other options. read more

Beautiful courses. However, it is disgusting how the only water available is either 5 dollars for a small bottle at the snack shop, or 4 dollars from a couple rickety vending machines form the 90's. Even at the bathroom stops you post clear signs that the water isn't drinkable. Left an extremely bad impression that kept me from fully enjoying the course. I agree with the other reviewers about the plentiful activities which entertained the kids as they enjoyed the summer sun. But the actual hotel room in the Bartley House was just so unappealing it's hard to forget. The smell was musty and stale and permeates my nose even on current ride back home. Likely because the carpet and furniture were just old and musty. The light in the bathroom turned on a fan which sounded similar to a Boeing 747. I am assuming there are other rooms which were not so unsavory as ours was not depicted in the brochure. #Misleading. Time to remodel. read more

This whole "saving for a house" thing is really cutting into our vacationing. We wanted to get some skiing in but didn't want to drop money on a fancy ski trip. To Northern Michigan we headed! The last 5 times I've skied, it's been out west. I am aware that skiing in the Midwest is very different. It's a bit of a drive but you get to go through the very picturesque town of Petoskey. We got the half-day tickets (12-4:30) and for both of us it came to less than $60. We grabbed lunch first and there was a decent selection in the cafeteria area in the lodge--salad bar, Chinese, Mexican, soup in a bread bowl, etc. Two panini-type sandwiches cost $15. They were good but definitely overpriced. There were 8 chair lifts. Runs only lasted a minute or two so we got bored quickly and were glad to have only purchased the half-day tickets. The snow was just okay. On some runs it was pretty icy and on others it was like skiing over snow covered gravel. And yes, you will see someone in jeans heading toward a black run. Take of Two Experiences- Food and beverage in Dinning room could not have been worse during our stay. Crabby people. Slope side bar- great people who try hard despite busy environment. We booked a 4 night stay with breakfast included, for Labor Day weekend. We arrived and checked in at the desk and got our keys. Lets just say that we didnt enjoy moving all our bags onto a cart in the parking lot and then pushing the cart up hill around the corner to the entrance of where our Peasantview Suite was located. What made it particularly challenging was all the chuck holes infront of the Heather Highlands bldg not to mention the curb we wouldve had to lift the baggage cart over had we not chosen to go the chuckhole sidewalk route. Yeh, we only lost a couple bags and the cooler when it tipped, so no biggy. We get up to our room, which supposedly sleeps six, to find that theres a 30 inch closet and 3 small drawers in the queen bedroom to unpack our stuff. The other closet had 4 hangers and no shelving in it all. This wasnt gonna work for us, so I went back down to the front desk to explain our plight and to see if they did complimentary upgrades. To which, I had the unfortunate experience of meeting their...attack dog..err I mean, front desk mgr. This person has no clue what it means to be in a service oriented position, was tremendously ungracious, and unusually LOUD with her transference of blame to other depts. Our conversation went like this: On the baggage cart: "We have a bellboy that we couldve sent to retrieve your baggage....i have never heard that comment before, couldn't you just push it on to the sidewalk? Me: then we had to lift the cart down 3 stairs as we werent instructed on that wing of the bldg. Being on a separate floor nor which elevator we would've had to use, after pushing the cart all the way down hallway to which we were greeted by the 3 stairs. The description on your website says the Pleasantview suite accomodates 6 but there are only 3 little drawers on the TV stand... Front desk person: Would you like to speak to our accommodations mgr?" I would like a complimentary upgrade as our suite is inadequate. "We dont give complimentary upgrades as our units are independently owned" Me: but you have more adequate rooms available? Then why wouldnt you just upgrade me? Front desk person: our rooms are independently owned and we work with them on pricing, but i can not give you a complimentary upgrade. I can, however, charge you an extra $400 and THEN can be upgraded. Me: whatever...i was done wit this person. We got the upgrade and went to our new room. Upon opening the door the foul smell of burnt microwave bacon had permeated every inch of that room...the foul stench stayed with us upon our entire visit. Other things i noticed...our hot tube wasnt a hot tub, merely a warm bath at 85 degrees. No towels were available down at the pool. We decided to use the main lodge's hot tub, but it wasnt working either. Of course. Segway tours are $60 per person for an 1.5 hr. Tour. The attack dog gave us an $87 credit on our already overpriced burnt bacon suite. Upon checkout, i informed the front desk person that we wouldnt be coming back as we believe complimentay upgrades are a service provided by a hotel that is striving for REPEAT business and its obvious that theirs is severely lacking in the service dept. I bought two tickets for the Aonach Mor Midnight Dinner to have a special date with my husband. Less than 24 hours before the event, they called to tell me that our booking was a mistake and that they were cancelling our dinner reservation. We had booked a hotel in the area to accommodate for this dinner, and because of the short notice we could not be refunded for our stay. Extremely aggravating situation. Never again. read more

This was my first time coming to Boyne Highlands, and I will 100% be coming back. Yes it is outdated, but it is clean and very comfortable. Everyone was very nice, and extremely helpful. They have a lovely ski valet (which is amazing if you have kids). You have basically an entire kitchen, so it's easy to have groceries. I was very pleased with my stay. read more
