Well, turns out that sign got hit by a truck a year or so ago and has been replaced. We learned this after juggling our agenda to come here a day later since they were closed on Sunday. The new sign is cool, but not vintage. But I do like me some snappy service. Years ago we went to a restaurant called Brown's Snappy Service. It possibly started some of our infatuation with places like this with cool signs and history posted all over the walls. We had burgers for breakfast at Ferrell's before 10 a.m. Because why not? The tiny cafe has about seven stools, and both staff and patrons were nicely hospitable and enjoyable to visit with. Also, turns out my dad was at nearby Fort Campbell for basic training, and that sparked some nice conversation with him once I shared where we were that night. We started out with an appetizer of Guiness BBQ meatballs! Oh yeah, perfect beginning to this meal. The BBQ sauce was smoky but had that hint of Guiness. Get ready because that will be a running theme. For my entree, I asked the waiter for a recommendation and his first choice was the Irish Banger and Mash. The sausage came in a Skillet with mash potatoes but what made this entree worth eating was the onion gravy! The gravy was rich and added so much to the sausage and Mas potatoes. I also chose Guiness Mac and cheese as a side! This Mac and cheese had the Guiness flavor to it with a whole lot of cheesiness! Sweet tea was refreshingly sweet! The service was a little slow but friendly! For the meatballs, Mac and cheese, and gravy - that is what you want from here. The rest was good too but those three items really made The Local feel welcoming to an out of towner like myself.

I went for the classic diner style, counter and stool seating where I could soak in the fullness of the experience as they prepared my food. I watched as they pulled the pre-portioned balls of hamburger from the refrigerator, smack it on the counter, smash it with the spatula, then slap it on the grill. The burger was classic - fresh, good tasting, hot off the grill, greasy goodness dressed to your preference. The chili cheese fries were not exactly as expected since I could see a warmer labeled "cheese sauce". Instead the freshly cooked, small batch of fries were covered in a layer of American cheese slices, then chili, then sprinkled with shredded cheddar. They tasted good, but the burger was definitely the star of the show. The staff were attentive but not super-friendly. No smiles and no chit-chat...these ladies were all business. I definitely recommend this and look forward to returning in the future.
