Nothing much has changed on the outside and the layout of sections is pretty much the same. The old building has charm of original fixtures, woodwork and details. If you like the the antiquing experience of digging for new finds, you'll like this store. Piles of things haphazardly on shelves and piled on the floor in front of them. Many items had slight imperfections, breaks and flaws- so make sure to check them over. My mom almost bought a bell before she realized it didn't have the all important hanging piece that makes it an actual bell, and I was looking at glass perfume bottles before I noticed the tips were chipped or they didn't spray. There is a variety of items, everything from Native American goods to figurines to newer dishes (Rae Dunn, Fiestaware, etc.) I did find a neat vintage suitcase in good condition! All in all, a decent place to spend some time if you are in town.

As soon as we came in the door the clerk at the desk began eyeing us as if we were doing something wrong. There were strands of colored beads hanging from a board that caught my nieces eye. She walked over and said "pretty" and lightly touched them. Within seconds the clerk behind the desk said "I'm going to have to ask you to hold that one" in a very snide manner. We are frequent fliers in Kalona and The Pink Begonia is a shop that we always try to hit but needless to say that will be changing. We will not go back and the staff/owners of the establishment might consider how they approach patrons with young children. Especially when the young children are well behaved and doing NOTHING wrong.

My friends and I have been to Renee's multiple times and we love it! The vibe at the store is very…read morecasual and we have spent hours painting, talking, and listening to the music (which is mostly newer pop, along with an occasional mix of older classic rock,and I have heard young children happily singing along and enjoying themselves many times!) Some of the pieces can seem a bit pricey, but size plays a factor. If the piece is bigger, it will require more glaze, which does require more than a single coat due to the nature of the clay and how it soaks it in, and it they also probably cost more to begin with. So, with that, I think the prices are actually very reasonable for what you are getting! Also, there is a good variety in the pieces that you can select as well as a good variety of prices for every budget. My friends and I all give Renee's 5 stars and are constantly recommending it to others as a fun way to spend time with friends while also being able to bring home a memento to remember the day. :)

A few weeks ago a small group of us went to Renee's to paint some pottery. We felt her prices were…read morefair for the pieces available to paint and there were some fun pieces to choose from, although options are slightly limited (however it is a smaller place). The rest of our experience was not so great and I would probably never go back. You are limited to only 6 colors, and this was NOT information given to us when we chose colors, so even though for one color I only needed literally the tiniest dot for, I still couldn't get any extra colors, and didn't find that out until after I had already begun painting. Someone with me had two pieces to paint and was still only allowed 6 colors. She was pretty snippy about it too. Also, the entire 2.5+ hours that we were there were spent listening to the owner remind everyone who was sitting and who came in the door that she closes at 4. We probably heard that reminder 20 times. One or two reminders as it gets closer to closing time is probably fair, but the amount we heard it was unprofessional and left a bad taste in our mouth. I'm happy enough with my piece, but some of the paint was streaky even after multiple coats and being fired, and after seeing some other pieces that were painted and fired there it seems to me to be a paint quality issue. I will paint ceramics again, just not here where my creativity is limited.

It's got a wide variety of items. I popped in on a Saturday evening and perused the shop. There are so many unique items, all priced appropriately. I was impressed to overhear a regular customer pop in and chat with the staff. There is definitely a sense of community at this shop. My daughter saw a daffodil Lego set and was thrilled have it purchased for her. (You're welcome.) It's cool that they have board game night (Thursdays) and that you can come play a board game yourself anytime during the day. On the same note-- if you have an old board game you can sell it here. You can now sell your used games in our store. To do this simply follow these few steps. You set the price and once it is sold you get 80% of that price as store credit. The coolest thing about The Hobby Corner is that they will order anything for you if you can't find it in the store-- at NO additional cost!
