Pink Begonia

My mom and I went here together a few days ago, after having not visited for at least a year or…read moremore. So, I figured a new review was in order. Nothing much has changed on the outside and the layout of sections is pretty much the same. The old building has charm of original fixtures, woodwork and details. If you like the the antiquing experience of digging for new finds, you'll like this store. Piles of things haphazardly on shelves and piled on the floor in front of them. Many items had slight imperfections, breaks and flaws- so make sure to check them over. My mom almost bought a bell before she realized it didn't have the all important hanging piece that makes it an actual bell, and I was looking at glass perfume bottles before I noticed the tips were chipped or they didn't spray. There is a variety of items, everything from Native American goods to figurines to newer dishes (Rae Dunn, Fiestaware, etc.) I did find a neat vintage suitcase in good condition! All in all, a decent place to spend some time if you are in town.

We had my 8 month old daughter in a stroller and my 2 year old niece was walking and being watched very closely not only by myself but also by my parents. As soon as we came in the door the clerk at the desk began eyeing us as if we were doing something wrong. There were strands of colored beads hanging from a board that caught my nieces eye. She walked over and said "pretty" and lightly touched them. Within seconds the clerk behind the desk said "I'm going to have to ask you to hold that one" in a very snide manner. We are frequent fliers in Kalona and The Pink Begonia is a shop that we always try to hit but needless to say that will be changing. We will not go back and the staff/owners of the establishment might consider how they approach patrons with young children. Especially when the young children are well behaved and doing NOTHING wrong.

Soon into our visit in the store, I was about 10 feet from my children while they were looking at the toys when the store owner took it upon herself to grab each one of my children aggressively and set them in "naughty chairs." She grabbed them under the arms hard enough that it greatly upset my 3 year old and my 2 year old wasnt sure what to think of it. There was no reason for her to touch my children - i was standing right there. I called the children - i was standing right there. I called the police to come out and talk to her - in which she of course lied to the deputy about what happened. Months ago I received an Earl May gift card. A few weeks before Christmas I decided to stop in here…read moreand use the gift card on some holiday plants. Specifically, poinsettias. The two poinsettias I chose didn't have foil wrappers on them, they were just in the black grow pots. I asked the salesperson working if they had any extra foil wrappers, and he explained that their supplier didn't send them with the plants (or ran out, I can't remember which). This was kind of disappointing. I thought for sure Earl May would have a back stock of these cheap foil wrappers, but there wasn't any attempt made to go beyond the explanation I was given or even recommend what I might use in their place. I wasn't going to buy pots. I didn't press the issue because these were for myself. Had I been buying them for others as gifts, I would have put them back, or asked that a wrapper be taken off of another plant. Not sure why I didn't ask about this in the first place, other than it seemed like I would have been inconveniencing this employee. Since I had the gift card and a coupon, I went ahead and left with the ones I had chosen. Their overall selection was pretty skimpy at the time I was there. poinsettias were just on one display near the cash register area. My poinsettias are still alive, though I wouldn't say thriving. Nice, clean store. Nice items for sale. Customer services was fine, but not extraordinary. Few customers and enough employees that I expected better. For selection I recommend Iowa City Landscaping and Garden Center or make the drive to Pierson's in Cedar Rapids.

I purchased 2 pink dogwoods and followed all of the planting, watering, and soil treatment guidelines per the staff and plant library recommendations. First tree did not make it through the winter. The replacement did not even make it 3 months despite doing everything staff recommended. ' To my dismay, the company will not replace a tree a 2nd time, so I am out over $250.00. For that reason, in spite of the helpful staff, I am taking my business to local greenhouses (whose prices are typically much more consumer friendly).
