You're not going to read any of that. You probably won't even read this. But guess what? I am a rando with rando tenancies and plan on telling you the real store of the Bonnet Carre. Here are some things you should know: 1. I used to think it was named after lady named Bonnie Carey. Maybe she was Jim's niece or something. What the heck did I know? It wasn't until much later that I learned it's actual named after the hood of a car in England. Why a mud riding spot is named after a car hood is beyond me. I don't make the rules bub. 2. This is a great place to go mud riding. Nuff said. When I was in high school some friends and I met some weird hippy dude in an old CJ. He took us in the woods and didn't murder us. 3. This place saves Nola from flooding. Right now it has also turned the lake brown as heck, but I'll take muddy lake water over 20 feet of water in my office. 4. The road that runs through this area blows goats. Quit hogging the left lane and driving like a jackass. If you read anything, read this. Oh and by the way, don't use your hazard lights when it's foggy bro/bro-ette. Got it?

So here's a reprise: I'm really glad that I don't drive over the Spillway in rush hour very often. Because even though it's 2 lanes in each direction in a STRAIGHT LINE, people are dumb. And make a mess with traffic for zero reason. But it can be a really pretty drive when the traffic is light and the weather is right. Favorite spillway memories: 1. commuting to BR to get my graduate degree, and on the way home seeing the biggest brightest spring moon rise ever. It was like a blessing. 2. They opened the spillway for flood control when I was a little kid. My Mom decided we should go see so she loaded me, bro2 and bro3 in our old Volkswagen van. We're driving back and there are a bajillion crawfish crossing the highway so my Mom stops and we all run along the shoulder by headlight and scoop up crawfish into the van so we can boil them later. I don't really remember much about the spillway being open except rushing water. Kids. They're just unappreciative. Now the crawfish and the mosquito bites, that I remember.

Great Italian food but not so great pizza…read more Gendusa's is pretty solidly dependable (very) local Italian restaurant in downtown Kenner. It's right on Williams in Rivertown, so there's plenty of parking. It's a popular place, so expect to wait 15-30 minutes most nights. Inside it's a gaudy mess that takes its theming from mafia movies. Hokey and tacky but you're not there for the interior design, so it's fine. It's very family friendly but sometimes too much so in that there are often kids running around playing next to your table, doing splits on the floor, or just banging on stuff and acting up, and since there don't seem to be managers around ever, no one tells the bad kids' bad parents to act right or leave. Food wise it's typical southern Italian food. Good flavor and well cooked. Portions are decent and not out of line with the pricing. A better value than most Italian restaurants for sure. Where Gendusa's repeatedly falls flat though is with their pizza. They try. You can tell they do because they're using high quality ingredients and they don't skimp on toppings. The crust could be better but it's not bad. The sauce has a good flavor but they barely put any of it on the pizza. Even if you ask for heavy sauce the only place you can see any of it is right near the perimeter. Without enough sauce and with a not so flavorful crust, the taste of the pizza is pretty much just that of the toppings. The toppings, though, is where their pizzas really fail. As mentioned above, they do use high quality toppings and they give you lots of them. But, the toppings are never cooked right! They're either all basically raw / uncooked, or if you're lucky, the toppings at the very top will be nicely cooked on the very top surface, but nothing below that very top surface bit of oven exposure is ever done. In fact, every time I've gotten a pizza there, most every topping has been still room temperature even when the rest of the pizza is too hot to eat. Gendusa's clearly know how to cook, but they don't seem to know how to cook pizza. They know how to make a pizza. They just don't know to cook that pizza. My guess is they need to cook their pizzas at a lower temperature for a much longer time...long enough so that every single topping at every level gets fully cooked all the way through...and only then maybe move the pizza over to higher heat to give the crust and such a good finish. Check out the photos below. You can see how the sausage on the very top got nice and done as did the edges of the ham, but the pepperoni and such below is cool to the touch and entirely uncooked. If Gendusa's can fix this, they'll have some solid pizza to go with their great Italian food. I hope they troubleshoot and make improvements.

The Sunday evening before the big weekend, this parade started at 5:30p and the route is so long that I was able to catch it near the end at 8:45p (it was finally finished close to 10p). This is only the 2nd Metairie parade that I have watched for more than only a few floats. This years theme was cartoons, and each float was a different cartoon. The Muppets, the Simpsons, the Flintstones and just all of them. The marching bands were on point. There weren't as many dance krewes as the New Orleans parades. I did catch this parades near the end of the route and some of the float riders did not ration their throws well, and were out of goodies by the time they got to us. I am sure that drivers were irritated by the parking as at the end of the parade, the floats stop so the riders can off load their belongings keeping the roads blocked. I am kind of surprised at how much I really liked this parade. The people watching was awesome as was everything about the parade.

It is largely closed to the public, but I know I would love to explore this place. It is about a mile outside of the current city limits of New Orleans. It is essentially just a powder keg covered by cement, dirt and grass. Still would make a lovely place for a picnic.
