Gendusa's and Porch and Patio are 2 great Rivertown restaurants. There is a cute women's clothing boutique called the Tin Roof. Sullivan's is a perfect fit for this old timey quaint street selling all kinds of homemade goods. And who can forget, Debbie on the Levee for a dobite! You can even get your license renewed at the Kenner DMV. I recently visited during Christmas time and they had a really nice Christmas light display that was free to enter! It was perfect for my 2.5-year-old to walk through and gaze at the lights. During the day and all year long it's a great photo op spot with a cute bridge over water. Wouldn't be the burbs without plenty of free parking. Gotta love that! There are still quite a few empty spots for businesses so hopefully this trend keeps up and more places start to open over here.

There is a lot of potential for this place to develop into a shopping and entertainment district but so far that hasn't happened. I mainly end up in this area when I'm visiting to eat at Gendusa's which has some good food and draws quite a crowd of its own. Here are some things you should know: 1. I used to think it was named after lady named Bonnie Carey. Maybe she was Jim's niece or something. What the heck did I know? It wasn't until much later that I learned it's actual named after the hood of a car in England. Why a mud riding spot is named after a car hood is beyond me. I don't make the rules bub. 2. This is a great place to go mud riding. Nuff said. When I was in high school some friends and I met some weird hippy dude in an old CJ. He took us in the woods and didn't murder us. 3. This place saves Nola from flooding. Right now it has also turned the lake brown as heck, but I'll take muddy lake water over 20 feet of water in my office. 4. The road that runs through this area blows goats. Quit hogging the left lane and driving like a jackass. If you read anything, read this. Oh and by the way, don't use your hazard lights when it's foggy bro/bro-ette. Got it?

So here's a reprise: I'm really glad that I don't drive over the Spillway in rush hour very often. Because even though it's 2 lanes in each direction in a STRAIGHT LINE, people are dumb. And make a mess with traffic for zero reason. But it can be a really pretty drive when the traffic is light and the weather is right. Favorite spillway memories: 1. commuting to BR to get my graduate degree, and on the way home seeing the biggest brightest spring moon rise ever. It was like a blessing. 2. They opened the spillway for flood control when I was a little kid. My Mom decided we should go see so she loaded me, bro2 and bro3 in our old Volkswagen van. We're driving back and there are a bajillion crawfish crossing the highway so my Mom stops and we all run along the shoulder by headlight and scoop up crawfish into the van so we can boil them later. I don't really remember much about the spillway being open except rushing water. Kids. They're just unappreciative. Now the crawfish and the mosquito bites, that I remember.

We had a large party and were sat in the back room which happened to be infested with flies topped off with flouresent lighting and no music. The flies were so bad that the container of red peper flakes had about 50 flies swarming inside to point where my 2yr old pointed it out and said "Ewwww bugs!!" We told the waiter of the problem and he said they knew about it and spray once a week but essentially it is what it is. No visit from the manager or anything to make the situation right. I was probably one of the only people who truly enjoyed my meal. Everyone else mentioned the food quality or taste not being the same... or they had flies in their food. The new bathrooms only have 1 stall which is quite a downgrade from the last location. Our server was very nice overall though. Wont be back.

I enjoyed myself even though I'm totally out of shape again and it was difficult tromping about in the sand. The few of us that did go practiced hitting and serving, and it brought me back to my days in college when I played intramural beach volleyball at Southern Miss. The facility at coconut beach is massive and well kept. They also have a huge covered bar which is really cool! Maybe next time more people will be interested and we can have a fun game of volleyball!

The Sunday evening before the big weekend, this parade started at 5:30p and the route is so long that I was able to catch it near the end at 8:45p (it was finally finished close to 10p). This is only the 2nd Metairie parade that I have watched for more than only a few floats. This years theme was cartoons, and each float was a different cartoon. The Muppets, the Simpsons, the Flintstones and just all of them. The marching bands were on point. There weren't as many dance krewes as the New Orleans parades. I did catch this parades near the end of the route and some of the float riders did not ration their throws well, and were out of goodies by the time they got to us. I am sure that drivers were irritated by the parking as at the end of the parade, the floats stop so the riders can off load their belongings keeping the roads blocked. I am kind of surprised at how much I really liked this parade. The people watching was awesome as was everything about the parade.

I paid a $375 deposit for my own large party, so the restaurant knew in advance how many guests to expect. Planning adequate staffing and service should not have been a surprise. The wait was so bad that I asked for my birthday cake to be brought out before dinner just so my guests could have something to eat. Imagine inviting people to celebrate your birthday and having to serve cake because the restaurant still hasn't served their meals. To make matters worse, I received my food last, and the waitress forgot to put in my side order. After all that waiting, our food wasn't even hot. Our bill was over $1,000. At that price, timely service, complete orders, and hot food are basic expectations. Tana failed on all three. A birthday dinner is an occasion you cannot redo. I left disappointed and embarrassed that my guests had spent their evening waiting and hungry. It is essentially just a powder keg covered by cement, dirt and grass. Still would make a lovely place for a picnic.
