The Sunday evening before the big weekend, this parade started at 5:30p and the route is so long that I was able to catch it near the end at 8:45p (it was finally finished close to 10p). This is only the 2nd Metairie parade that I have watched for more than only a few floats. This years theme was cartoons, and each float was a different cartoon. The Muppets, the Simpsons, the Flintstones and just all of them. The marching bands were on point. There weren't as many dance krewes as the New Orleans parades. I did catch this parades near the end of the route and some of the float riders did not ration their throws well, and were out of goodies by the time they got to us. I am sure that drivers were irritated by the parking as at the end of the parade, the floats stop so the riders can off load their belongings keeping the roads blocked. I am kind of surprised at how much I really liked this parade. The people watching was awesome as was everything about the parade.

This is the largest parade outside of NOLA city limits with over 600 members! If you want to see a parade in Metairie during Mardi Gras this is one of the ones not to be missed. It is full of local high school bands and cool floats. RECOMMEND!

We spent most of our time focused on the busy stretch between Jackson and Felicity in the Lower Garden District since we were already admiring the architecture in the neighborhood. If you're big into eclectic boutiques and cozy cafes but not into the French Quarter crowds, this is the place to hang for an afternoon. We peeked through locally owned, independent shops with fanciful names like Imperial Woodpecker and Sesame the Opossum. Truth be told, we're not that big on shopping, but we are world-class browsers. For fellow browsers, the downtown end of the street leads to more significant cultural sights like the National WWII Museum (review: https://yelp.to/YedRbqqY-N) and the Ogden Museum of Southern Art (review: https://yelp.to/l7_pkjG2Sc).
