It was a little confusing at first, since when we walked in, there were tables throughout the room. We weren't sure if we were supposed to sit down at one and be served or if they were just random tables where you could sit anywhere you want it. However, once we got our bearings around the event, we had a great time. We started shopping the makers market, which didn't have a lot of vendors, but had enough of different things to make it interesting. Then we had charcuterie cups filled with crackers, nuts, chocolate, fruit, salami, and cheese. A bit overpriced for what they were but glad to have something snackie. We also had a flight of mimosas, and finished off the day by making a beautiful Bouquet of fresh flowers. They did have pancake vendor as well. I didn't try it since I wanted a savory snack. I wish the food choices were advertised better. It was a small sheet of paper on a table. I didn't even know that the 3 additional food options existed until someone told me where I had to go to find this piece of paper. Other than that, it was a great time had by all in my group.

I never even knew this was a possibility but stumbled upon it, thanks to the power of Google, when I was looking for a venue that would accommodate 50-ish people for my son's baptism reception lunch. This place definitely won't break the bank by any stretch of the imagination. The only downside is that it's not much to look at. The hall is nice and airy, 2 walls of windows let ample light stream in, and a wall of floor to ceiling mirrors reflect the light. The floors are wood, and the walls are cream, which provide a nice neutral palette for decorating without worrying about clashing. There's a tiny little kitchen in the back corner, complete with microwave and a full-sized refrigerator. Obviously they don't cater or anything, which is both a plus and a minus. They don't even have a coffee maker on hand, so be prepared to bring your own. What they do supply, or at least claim to, are 6-8 tables and 40-50 chairs. What we found when we arrived were 3 tables and about 20 chairs. We never did locate the rest of the tables and chairs, but we made due with what we had. This place isn't fancy by any stretch of the imagination, but if you're looking for a nice facility to hold a lunch or a get-together that isn't in your home, Algonquin's Historic Village Hall is a great option. We will definitely keep this place in mind for our next party.

Unfortunately, this visit happened during an incredibly difficult time. I had just attended the funeral of a 13-year-old girl and then traveled to Illinois for another funeral. I had been awake since 2:00 a.m. traveling and arrived at the hotel around noon. I rarely ask for early check-in because I normally plan my travel around standard check-in times, but given the circumstances, I hoped I could simply drop off my luggage, refrigerate a few groceries, and briefly settle in before my 1:30 p.m. meeting. When I approached the front desk and asked whether early check-in was possible, the employee immediately responded, before I could even finish speaking, that it would cost $40. I mentioned that during a previous stay I had been allowed to check in early without a fee, and she stated that policy had changed. What upset me most was not the fee itself, but the complete lack of empathy or willingness to listen. I explained that I had been traveling since 2:00 that morning, had groceries needing refrigeration, and was emotionally and physically exhausted. She simply repeated that it would cost $40. At that point, I had not even mentioned that I hold Platinum Elite status. Even after reviewing my reservation and seeing my status, she still made no effort to accommodate the request. I told her that because of the excellent service during prior visits, I had chosen to give this property my business whenever I returned home to Illinois, despite living in Texas. I also told her they were about to lose my reservation and future business. She appeared completely indifferent. I left the property with groceries in 80-degree weather and went to my appointment. Shortly afterward, I booked a Hampton Inn about 15 miles away and canceled the remaining nights of my Holiday Inn stay. Later that evening, when I returned to retrieve my room key for the one remaining night, I noticed the Platinum Elite benefits card included in the key packet. One of the listed benefits specifically mentioned early check-in and late checkout. When I called the front desk to ask about my Platinum benefits, I was speaking with the same employee. After I mentioned that early check-in was clearly listed as a benefit, there was complete silence on the phone. She then stated that checking in at 2:00 p.m. would have been fine, but because I requested noon check-in, the $40 fee applied. What made this even more frustrating was that the room itself cost only $106 for the night, and there were fewer than 10 cars in the parking lot, so rooms were clearly available. Later, I spoke with the manager, who was very professional and apologetic. She admitted the situation had been handled incorrectly and stated that I should not have been denied early check-in. She offered additional points to my account, though they have not yet appeared. I explained that my frustration was not just about policy, but about basic customer service and empathy. I have worked in customer service for 41 years, and sometimes customers simply want to feel heard. Instead, I felt dismissed during an already difficult time. Beyond the front desk issue, there were also problems with the TV service throughout the evening. The cable company had been onsite attempting repairs, but the television repeatedly lost picture while audio continued playing, requiring constant resets. The picture also pixelated every few minutes. Additionally, the bathtub badly needed resurfacing and appeared unclean. Normally, smaller maintenance issues would not bother me much, but combined with the overall experience, they became impossible to overlook. What disappoints me most is that this property had always provided warm, accommodating service during my previous stays. Sadly, this experience completely changed my perception, all because one employee chose policy over compassion and professionalism.

(Shamrock Texas still is the absolute worst) I would not recommend this hotel for anyone and here is why: 1. The rooms are old, outdated, dirty and smell bad. 2. The hotel offers no housekeeping but will have a service person make your bed and replace towels. They don't empty the trash or refill coffee for the room. 3. The front desk is not staffed and you will wait for any assistance from staff. 20 minutes is unacceptable. When a staff member does appear at the front desk, they are unfriendly and not nice. 4. Ants in the bathtub/shower. Again, I would advise anyone to book another hotel. This one sucks!
