Japanese cuisine is amongst our favorite cuisines. Perhaps being number one. The reviews for this eatery drew us to coming here. We frequent many ramen places all over this country. We were extremely excited to try a new ramen-oriented restaurant. It was cute and quaint inside of this establishment. Minimally decorated. Our waitress was kind and polite. We are sad to say that this was the worst ramen we have indulged in to date. Almost nothing about this restaurant was done correctly. The food was horrendous and the flavors were off. The only enjoyable item on the menu was the "happy belly buns." If you are from any major city that has authentic Japanese or Asian-fusion cuisine, you will definitely be let down by this restaurant. The only menu item one should even consider ordering would be the steamed buns. However, they were just decent. The Thai Tea was good and traditional, however it was way too sweet. The Seasonal Black Tonkotsu was horrendously bland. It was supposed to boast a creamy, black garlic-infused broth. We could not even taste the slightest hint of black garlic. The strangest aspect of this dish was the marinated egg. It seemed to be marinated in a beer of sorts. It tasted extremely cheap and very hoppy. Oddly enough, the egg itself had notes of artificial grape flavoring. The Drunken Udon was completely overloaded with green peppers. The overuse of green peppers completely threw the flavors of this dish off. Not to mention, it would flare up someone's arthritis. At this point there is no reason to continue to go more in depth on the lack of bold and authentic flavors, which previous reviewers boasted about. Past reviews highlighted the authenticity of Japanese ramen at this restaurant. They no longer are interested in doing business. They used to care about customers and have a customer mindset. Now I walked in with my family and stood at the door for 11 minutes until someone came over and said it would be a 15 minute wait to sit down and eat. There were six open tables. When I pointed this out she said others were waiting to sit down and she just had not called them yet. Super disappointing!!! read more

When I first heard about Bowl Ninety-One I knew I had to try it. I was finally able to do that this afternoon and now I wish I did not wait so long to do so. Atmosphere- I love the layout and atmosphere here. There are lots of tables and a few seats at the bar. Drinks- They have a decent selection of drinks. Pepsi products, Coke, Diet coke, Thai coffee, Thai tea, and hot tea. They don't have iced tea which is usually my go to but its a very minor thing. Food- Holy freaking crap the food here is amazing. I wish I could give the place 6 stars because of how good the food is. I ordered Crab Rangoons and Chicken Pad Thai with Crispy Pork Belly. The Crab Rangoons were a lot bigger than I thought they would be and they are some of THE BEST Crab Rangoons I have ever eaten. I can't wait to get these again. The Pad Thai was delicious as well. The pork belly I added was perfect. It was the right amount of crispy and flavor. I wish it could come more spicy but I was able to add Sriracha to it to make it spicy. Service- Some of the best service I have ever had. I was sat very quickly and my order was taken by a very friendly gentleman who also raved about the crab rangoons when I mentioned how freaking delicious they were. My food was brought out quickly and was hot. My server made sure that my water stayed filled the whole time I was there. If you want a great place to get lunch or dinner Bowl Ninety-One is a can't miss place. This will probably climb the list to one of my favorite eateries in Appleton. I'm all about supporting the ma and pa shops in the little Apple (aka Appleton) so when I heard that the first ramen shop opened up, I made sure to spend my corporate per diem here for dinner one night. Verdict: pleasantly surprised by taste, depth, flavor of the broth. Noodles were fresh. Chasu on point. Is it amazing ramen? No but it's pretty darn good for a small college town in Wisconsin. My one disappointment came from the mango iced green tea drink. I specifically asked the server how sweet it was and she said it wasn't too bad; they don't add sugar to the drink. So I trusted her opinion and gave it a whirl. It was WAY TOO SWEET. I told her, hoping she'd provide some sort of remedy but she just walked away. So minus a star for lack of customer service. it's been hard being a cali raised asian foodie out here in the midwest but bowl 91 didn't disappoint ! Spicy miso was my dish (bottom) and my boyfriend got tom yum yummy (top). We switched bowls for a taste about half way through and I still thought it was amazing. Spicy miso could've been a little spicier but I do like it reallllyyyyg spicy. Tom yum yummy should've had some more sour and creamy flavor for sure! it was good but really didn't get the tom yum flavor from the broth. thai tea was the best, most authentic flavor i've had out here 10/10. perfect cream to tea ratio also! our server was a wonderful young girl with glasses, amazing service!!!! Delicious food ! I have been her three times. Today I had the special which was Squash Curry. It had squash, cashews, tofu and cranberries. Delicious taste. The staff was friendly especially the waitress. The only thing I did not like was the bathroom was small. I also was seated right across from the door so I was chilly. Right on College Ave in the heart of downtown Appleton. Great location and my daughter and I scored the best table (the one by the window facing College Ave). We came in during the lunch rush at about 1215. I think this may factor into my star deduction, but more on that later. We were just looking for lunch, so we skipped the apps, but they looked delicious. The table next to us had the Rangoons and they looked on point. I had a soda and kudos to Bowl 91 for providing Pepsi products. I may be in the minority on that one, but Diet Dew scores points with this Yelper. I ordered the drunken noodles with chicken. Five stars for Bowl 91. I'm from out of town and boy howdy - it is hard to find anything vegetarian or vegan in this part of the country. I ordered the Vegan Panang Curry w tofu and everything was cooked to perfection. Flavors were on point. The food made me feel good and nourished so I know it was truly vegan. I have been here twice and for both times I had awesome ramen. The broth tasted like it was simmered for hours. I asked for chilli on the side and they served chopped Thai chills which made the ramen extremely spicy and personally for me-that was what made the broth even tastier. We also had crab Rangoon which was fried to perfection. The service was great and the ambience was very homely. Even during week days, the place was pretty full. My wife and I have been waiting for an opportunity to come down from GB to visit Bowl 91, and it was very much worth the drive down! Wow, they have some delicious food... It's definitely a fusion of asian flavors, and while not being authentic with any one thing, what we had was quite awesome. We started with the lemongrass chicken tacos, which were very tasty. I would love to see an option of having these in a lettuce wraps, but the corn tortillas were quite nice. The addition of the pickled veggies with jalapenos gave it an almost banh mi taste. Next we had a few eggrolls, Hmong style (our favorite), which were as good as any I've had in the area. I then had the tum yum yummy, as I love Tom Yum soup, and I was extremely impressed! Nice spice, lovely flavor, tasty meat and decent noodles. It's something I would order time and time again without hesitation. I am looking forward to trying their zucchini noodle option. My wife had the pho, as she is a lover of all things pho, and this was a very worthy take on the classic dish. And it very well may be the best pho in the in the area! It had that wonderful, and classic, pho favor with a nice depth of flavor that you only find in places that really care about the broth. This place was a pleasant surprise!! We were headed to our go to spot and it was busy, so we ducked in to Bowl 91. OMG . Off the chain. Five minute wait had the Hmong egg rolls "yum". Had the Beef Bolgogi Tacos . Awesome !!! I ordered the Tom Yum Yummy. Delicious!!! Just the right spice and everything!!! I have a feeling this place will out grow their location!!! The decor is drab - simple - boring - no ambience as if they don't care to dress the place up. Two large screen TVs with a small bar that seats 4 and table and chairs throughout. I am already excited to dine here again! We arrived Thursday evening about 6:00 pm and all the tables were visibly full, and it was a bit awkward standing in the dining area waiting to be greeted. We were greeted after a couple of minutes and were first on the waiting list to be seated; it only took a few minutes to turn the next available table. Our server was very friendly and engaging. She took our drink and appetizer orders right away, which I really liked. I ordered the hot ginger tea, which was light, spicy and slightly sweet. For our entrees, we ordered the Tom Yum Yummy ramen and Crispy Pork & Chinese Broccoli with rice. Both were delicious and completely different. The ramen dish had great texture, was so savory and the broth had a nice depth of flavor. I was super excited to try out Bowl 91 since Appleton did not have any ramen restaurants. It did not disappoint! The Thongkatsu had excellent flavor and so did the Tom Yummmy ramen. I had the Iced Thai Tea which was also good- but it was a lot of ice so I would ask for 'light ice' to get more tea. The bulgogi tacos were an appetizer and really good, although there were only two of them and we wanted more! My mom is a true ramen expert and she was pleased with the quality of the soup and broth. Her only complaint was the slow service, which I agree with. The prices aren't too bad, about $13 for a bowl of ramen. The atmosphere is nice and I'm willingly to pay that much money since the restaurant is well decorated and the employees are kind. Definitely recommend! read more

the service experience was so unforgivable, they only get 1/5. Our party was large so they split us into two tables in different sections of the restaurant (no huge biggie). One table had the good normal service and good food. The other table was literally forgotten. After frustration, we confronted the wait staff only to find out the table's entire food order was never even sent to the kitchen. One neglected person still needed to eat so told them they still wanted their food to go (the rest of the table went to their homes to find food). After about 1hr from arrival, they got a to-go order. After arriving back home, we found it WAS THE WRONG ORDER! Nothing was comp'd. Not that one meal to the neglected customer. Not a single drink to the neglected table. Not even a discount, let alone any significant apology beyond "oops, sorry". The cherry on top was that they still ticketed the two tables as one party and included a forced 18% gratuity. I will never go here again. I will never recommend it. read more
