Upon entering the store my friends and I were greeted by an employee that I had never seen before. She gave us a rundown of the store while we were looking around and I politely told her that we had been there before and didn't need to be told where and what things were. That was excusable. However, the experience got stranger. I was looking through a box and found a loose pair of pantyhose that I was thinking about purchasing. The employee entered the other room where my friends and I were Coincidentally, I picked up my bag and the pantyhose and went over to another section at the same time she was entering. In doing that I think I may have set off a shoplifting alarm in her head. Without asking, she picked up the pantyhose next to my bag and told us that she was going to put them up front. I protested because I wasn't sure if I wanted her to do that. She proceeded to tell me in somewhat of a scolding tone that she was going to bring them up front (regardless of my protests) and that they should have been left in their packaging (there was no packaging). After this encounter, she kept her eye on us consistently. I tried on two dresses and she interrupted my conversation to ask me a question about the dress I had on. She also asked loudly if anyone was in the dressing room as I was clearly changing in there. I found this whole experience strange and frankly invasive. I also felt singled out because of some unfounded (and obvious) suspicion. I do enjoy Castaways and I have been a long-time patron. However, I am reluctant to go in the store again because I would not like to have another encounter like the one I had today.

When I finally went in I was greeted pleasantly and the shop was organized well and inviting, with vintage charm. As I browsed the shoes, I was directed to the shelves with my size and encouraged to try on anything I liked. I kept on a pair of boots to ensure they were comfortable for me while I shopped the rest of the store. I found so many things I loved, including a ring and a unique cardigan that elicits multiple compliments every time I wear it. While I was shopping for over an hour, other shoppers came in, new and repeat customers. Each person was welcomed pleasantly, and assisted with any questions with no pressure whatsoever. The Northern Dutchess Hospital's Thrift Shop is one of the better thrift shop I could ever visit…read more The floors are generally clean, and it's well maintained, and although they rarely have shoes to fit me(yes, on occasion, they do have mens shoes), there are some things they do commonly carry in my size. Their products are well tagged with prices, and service is good. Check this place out, before deciding on purchasing elsewhere(to make sure you've exhausted your search). Even for those who end up in Northern Dutchess Hospital and who have lost most of their clothes from car accidents or whatever, this store might even have some type of product to get you back on your feet at good prices, until you can get back on your feet again). No inside hallway connection between the hospital and this thrift shop exists, so walking between these two seems to be unconvincing. A person will either get hypothermic walking here, or become scorched from the hot sun walking here from the hospital). From the name, however, I wonder what percentage of the sales price the hospital takes in on money? This place doesn't look like it's been ever improved in a dozen or so years.
