We had hoped to have breakfast at 9:30 on a Monday morning. There was a line out of the door. We didn't have time to wait so we bought a variety of pastries and coffee from their bakery and brought them to the park. Everything we bought was fantastic. A combination of French baking skills but rustic and unusual flavors. Had a crunchy thyme pastry, a phenomenal carrot cake, a tiny blueberry galette packed with flavor, an apple turnover of sorts and a savory sandwich. Came here for breakfast. We were told the wait would be 30 mins and it only ended up being 15. Host was nice but not overly friendly. We were seated upstairs which wasn't as charming as the main dining room but at least the wait wasn't long. Our waiter had a major attitude like he would rather be anywhere else but working here. Despite that the coffee and food were great. I had an americano and my partner had a chai latte with almond milk. They charged us for the almond milk. Both drinks were good. For breakfast I had the one vegan option the ciabatta sandwich which was excellent. The bread was amazing-super fresh, crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside. It was served with both spicy and savory matcha sauces both delicious. My partner had the brioche French toast served with cream and maybe ice cream. He wasn't sure but said everything was excellent. We ate there on our first day while staying in Oaxaca for 3 days and ended up going everyday for breakfast and diner. The english muffin breakfast sandwich was absolutely the greatest breakfast I've ever had. The pancakes aren't just pretty but they're delicious. We came back for dinner and had their pizza and another sandwich i cant recall but they too were excellent!! The pizza was on par with pizza I've had in NY and Italy, maybe better and the sandwich at dinner was just as good as the breakfast sandwich. Ok. You read reviews some are great (gushing) and some complain (slow). We experienced none of this on our Tuesday 11:00am brunch. We ordered the hot cakes and Banh-mi. I live in Footscray which could be described as one of the Vietnamese culinary centres outside Vietnam so of course I'm going to see what Oaxacan Banh-mi is going to taste like. I'm no purist when it comes to food as most can be improved. Well, their Banh Mi was otherworldly. Don't go there if you can't handle spicey food. We went to breakfast here twice in the main courtyard and once for happy hour at the back bar near the restrooms. A few tips: expect to wait- this place is popular with locals and tourists there will be a wait sometimes 10 minutes sometimes 20 minutes- be nice, don't ask for your turn just wait patiently. If you are okay sitting at a large table to share with other parties of 2 this will make the wait less - Mesa compartida esta bien. Also most people speakk englIsh however they are very patient with you if you would like to practice your Spanish while ordering. Definitely try spanish first the if you can't find the word use English. To pay- you can ask for the check at your table or just go to the register girl point to your table and she'll pull up your ordeer on the screen to double check, you can pay with card or cash directly- she will ask what you'd like to tip you can say 20% percent and she'll take care of it so no math needed. The back bar bartenders are so fun and amazing to speak with- we practiced our Spanish and they practiced their engLish all while learning more about each other. Back bar only has 4 seats so you do have to check in with the host for seating- there are bees at the bar due to all the fresh fruit and juices is this bothers you go to a table. All the food is good so don't worry about what to order. ONE last thing- they sell the hot sauce and marmalade in the bakery next door- the salsa Catalina is insane and one of my favorite hot sauces I've ever had we bought 2 to take home. Wow this is long but this place deserves the hype! Just remember to be polite and patient we saw too many Americans being rude to the host while waiting and made us cringe. As an adventurous eater, hole in the wall finder, mom and pop joint seeker, authentic lover, sometimes you just need a super hipster, tin roof café equipped with bakery display, latte art, and succulents tucked into crevice one can find. Not only is it ridiculously Instagram worthy (from the ceramics to the bearded waiters) the food is actually phenomenal. During my 4 day Oaxaca stay, I ate here 3 times (and it would have been a fourth had it been open one day). The Shakshuka, baked goods, croissant sandwiches, even muesli are all amazing.
