We were looking for a quick bite for breakfast before riding bikes around Oaxaca last week. (I had a restaurant in mind for a sit down meal, but then I realized we didn't have quite enough time.) We figured we would see something as we walked, and we did. Bodaega is small, but there was something about it that said: "Stop here." So we did. It's a bakery/café, with pastries and coffee. There's one rectangular dining table with benches surrounding it (communal seating), a pastry case, and an open kitchen (you can see them baking all the breads and pastries). And...what seemed like hundreds of bees. Maybe it was the buzzing of the bees that called us to stop here. (The bees didn't bother us and they didn't seem to bother the staff at all either, but if you're allergic, I'd stay away from Bodaega.) There was one pastry in particular that the bees seemed drawn to, which meant it was the I was drawn to also - the spandauer with mango/passionfruit curd and xoconostle (a relative of the prickly pear) fruit. It was amazing. We also enjoyed two americanos, and my husband enjoyed his cardamom knot. The service was great. All in all, I don't think I could have enjoyed a breakfast more. Great café, great coffee, and that pastry will stay in my brain for a long time (maybe I'll try to make a similar curd). There's not a sign above the entrance (I don't think), so just listen for the bees and stop in. Two thumbs up. read more
