Boulenc is a breakfast and cafe spot in the city center of Oaxaca. It's popular among tourists but also among locals as well. We went a little before open and there was already a small line forming. We ordered the ham and cheese croissant ($145 MXN) and the shakshuka ($135). The croissant was soft and I liked the cheesiness and creaminess. The shakshuka had a bit of spice and I liked dipping the bread into the sauce. The eggs were a little hard though and not runny at all. Both of these dishes were delicious and I still think about the shakshuka even today. For drinks we had the flat white ($58) and iced latte ($63) which were also good. We usually don't go to the same place more than once during our travels but this place was just so good we had to. This was my favorite brunch spot and I can see why it's such a popular spot. read more

Phenomenal. Canceled restaurant plans the next day so we could come back. The Cruaffle is like a grilled panini sandwich made in a waffle maker is a must try, as is the cucumber salad and betabel dip. Also, don't forget to order a bunch of bakery stuff before you leave. I wanted to love Boulenc given the constant lines and rave reviews, and the nice ambiance, but my experience was genuinely disappointing across the board. The Food: I ordered the Reuben sandwich, the lamb flatbread from the specials menu, and a fruit tart from the bakery next door. All three were underwhelming. The Reuben was incredibly bland - the meat had no flavor, and the bread was a hard, nutty wheat that didn't work for this type of sandwich at all. I figured maybe I'd have better luck with their pizza since they're known as a bakery, so I ordered the lamb flatbread special. It looked like they just smeared the lamb on dough and called it a day - no care or attention to detail. The fruit tart from the bakery was stale with thick, bland cream that tasted like it had zero sugar. For a place with a bakery reputation, this was shocking. The Service: The waitress had an attitude from the start. When I ordered the lamb flatbread, she told me "it's going to take 45 minutes" (it took 20) When I said I didn't mind waiting, she seemed annoyed. It also took forever to get my michelada - literally tomato juice, seasonings, and beer, nothing complicated. Menu Availability Issues: Multiple items I wanted weren't available. They were out of all beer but corona,, and apparently hamburgers, pizzas, and most of their specials menu aren't available until after 2 PM. I ordered a green juice, I was told that also wasn't available until 2 PM. The limited availability felt arbitrary. I also ordered a baked good from the restaurant, but the waitress forgot it entirely, so I had to go next door only to find the goods from the bakery and restaurant are different, and what i got from the bakery (the fruit tart) was also bland. read more

One of the better bakeries in Oaxaca. I just got their grab and go pastries from their bakery section and didn't stop to order food. There are tons of options to choose from but I went with one of their loaf slices and a cookie. The loaf slice was delicious. It had hints of chocolate and cream in it. The cookie wasn't the best...I've had much better. Next time I'm in Oaxaca I have to stop and dine in as they had several lunch options to choose from as well. The place it is in can be confusing but you can't miss the big doors and people usually lined up outside by it. The wait wasn't that long - we did have a reservation so it could be different if you don't. The food was amazing !! Good flavors and nice environment. I had a matcha but it tasted like regular milk. This is a beautiful establishment with amazing pastries and breakfast. They also serve lunch and dinner here. I'm not sure how the lunch and dinner options are but the breakfast is amazing. My fiancé and I ordered the molletes and shakshuka. The molletes were just ok, not my favorite. But the shakshuka is a winner. Portion sizes were huge. Make sure to come early because there's always a wait but the line goes pretty fast. We came here on a Friday morning at 10AM and waited for 15 minutes. A cool brunch spot in Oaxaca. Pictured is my wife's molletes with some of the thickest bacon pieces I've seen. My entree was a ham and cheese toast which was solid, but get the molletes if you can. I came here on three separate occasions and WOW WOW WOW. I wish i lived near there so i could go every day. At first i had the croissant de jamon y quesillo. the croissant was buttery and flaky and just perfect. I had the latte estragon frio as a drink and I was literally shaky right after, the caffeine hit hard on this one. I was told the pizza here was delicious so we went a different night and LOVED that they had the option to order halves of different pizzas. So we ordered 4 different halves. All so so good. And the best dish there, hands down, is the Shakshuka. I cant do spice so I asked if they could accommodate that and they were more than happy to. ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS. You all need to try. This place is also a hotel and you can stay there which is pretty neat. The servers were all so kind and the service was great. I guess it might have been good at some point but the taste didn't keep up with increasing customers crowding this place. Long waiting, at least 40 mins around breakfast time. We had 2 chocolate milk, one cappuccino, shakshuka and ciabatta vegetarian sandwich. Service and ambiance were good but we had much better food at other places in Oaxaca. Chocolate milk at casa mayordomo was much better, cappuccino had only slight hints of espresso. Shakshuka is their own version not the standard one and tasted alright. And veggie sandwich was full of mushroom and cheese, there weren't other veggies in it really. Overall not worth the wait, you can find other good places in Oaxaca. read more

Exquisite food The food at this café bakery restaurant is exquisite! We enjoyed our main meals and the desserts (tiramisu made with hazelnut biscotti and brownie) were amazing. The main meals were accompanied by their signature sourdough which was terrific! (Note that several Oaxacan eateries are using the Boulenc sourdough!) This review is for the baked goods. I tried their croissant and almond croissant and they are acceptable but not out of the ordinary. From speaking with locals they used to be on a higher level but the last few years the quality has gone down as their volume has gone up. Totally understandable but if you are picky about your croissants I found a better one at a much smaller bakery nearby. If you are in the area I would say go ahead and try Boulenc for yourself - I feel Boulenc is not bad I was just disappointed based on all the super high reviews. She loves a good bakery and I'm always interested in what's at the top of everyone's list in certain cities. Boulenc came up on numerous lists as I was researching yummy bakeries to try in the area. I knew I'd walk over for breakfast while in town. The space is perfect and I found them with ease. I was going to order to-go when I realized I actually had time to stay, so I walked around to their restaurant side and secured a table. Service was quick and friendly. I don't think you can go wrong with any of their fresh baked pastries. I also wanted a little yogurt dish with fresh fruit so I paired that with my latte and chocolate almond croissant. Boulenc makes for the perfect special bakery and restaurant setting for a lovely breakfast if you're looking for sit down or takeaway. In a bout of exhaustion after some long days (and nights) a western meal sounded beyond comforting. This was also a spot quite highly rated and reviewed by various food publications. Though I had initially intended to come for some pastries and coffee, I'm very glad we sat in the restaurant and came for a dinner. We went in pretty late in the evening around 10 pm after a bit of a sluggish day and ordered the Greek salad, and salami pizza. I also had a few glasses of the house wine. The wine was pretty decent considering the price, super easy to drink and mild/dry. For food, I found the Greek salad to be really interesting. It was light on the vegetables and quite heavy on the cheese. It also had some lime (I think?) squeezed in. I interpreted it as the Mexican flare on a Greek salad. The pizza was great. They are known for their fermentation, and the pizza crust did not disappoint. Great crisp, chew, and acidity. The pizza is accompanied by two salsas, catrina and macha (chili oils). Both were good but the macha was definitely our collective favorite - but very spicy! Didn't expect to get dessert but honestly it was such a hit. I believe it was a brownie and ice cream combo but the ice cream was incredible. It has an almost seductive buoyant texture that melts but still has a good heaviness to it. If this ice cream was sold on its own, I'd probably get it in a pint. Overall, I think we paid $35 per person for this meal, with drinks and dessert. read more

5 stars hands down! Make a reservation or come early and prepare to wait. We waited 25 mins. Per my photos attached, all good was delicious. I will say, I'm biased when it comes to shakshuka given I've had very tasty shakshuka in the states, particularly Israel, unfortunately but fortunately. This one comes pretty sweet due to the sweet tomates, so I left most of that behind but ate the eggs. They're French toast was by far a fave item of mine. So easy to tear and it melts in your mouth! The best I've had by far! **Must order** Fruit, granola, with yogurt, we got an order of that, and a custom one with kefir because we wanted the probiotic. We loved the probiotic! Note, it's bland, but if you're a fan of it then get it, otherwise stick to the original. The tea, was by far fresh (can you see how green it is??), so I recommend it if you're thinking about a hot tea. We got the molletes and the hot cakes to eat, green juice, and the juice of the day (cucumber orange) to drink. Everything was tasty and I loved the table salsas. One has sesame seeds and I believe cranberries, so good and flavourful! The space is big and full of greens and plants. There's a downstairs space and upstairs. We sat upstairs. The almond croissant was good, but quite dry. I wouldn't order it again. Minus one star for that. The alfajores were perfect and paired nicely with the coffee. I'll be getting more to go. The service was fine; nothing exceedingly friendly nor exceptional.
