Absolutely the worst childcare I have ever used. They have unqualified and incapable teachers, who are unable to handle a four-year-old temper tantrums. They are understaffed, and just put two-year-olds in the same classroom as four-year-olds with very little supervision and very little structure. Employees in my experience have been abundantly helpful, kind. responsive and professional. Facilities are clean and well maintained. The Boulder YMCA offers a plethora of services for the individual or family. If your looking for an ultra modern "Boutique Gym" there are many others in the Boulder area. We had an opportunity to stay in Boulder for a month and our son attended two weeks of summer camp at the Boulder location. The staff & camp was fantastic and highly recommended. I took the opportunity to workout and use some of the facilities while he was at camp. I'm fond of YMCA's as they tend to be affordable solid gyms and a membership at one allows access at others. This is a typical Y, with free weights, stacks, cardio machines, classes that are included in the membership cost, and a gym with an elevated track. This location also has a pool, though personally I'd trade it for one set of pre-loaded barbells. I'm sure swimmers would disagree. Other bonuses include convenient access to several bus lines and a Whole Foods as well as pilates reformer machines, though I've yet to try those. If there's a better deal for a gym in Boulder, I've not found it yet. read more

On day two of my YMCA membership and couldn't be happier. Registration and tour were smooth as butter yesterday and the staff were happy to accommodate me by ensuring we were wrapped up before my class begin (hooray for lunchtime TRX). I was pleasantly surprised by everything that the venue has to offer. Free Ozo coffee in the lobby, hot tub, sauna, pool, and an indoor track. Today I returned with a friend to take a dance class (I should mention here that dance is not my forte and I have a long history of freezing up in class). As myself and my friend had printer troubles this AM I was happy that the Y offered to print the online pass out for my friend - phew, relief. This dance class consisted of all ladies, a very talented and passionate teacher and amazing music. The teacher really helped us to open up, spread our wings and just let go. Following the class two separate classmates approached my friend and I to thank us for joining them and to tell us they had a great time dancing with us. I was totally blown away. I'm super glad to be a member here and look forward to returning tomorrow (they have a Jumpstart program where you can earn incentives such as a free personal trainer session for 12 visits in 30 days). When I first decided to give the Y a shot, I was broke, and knew they have a 10 day free trial pass. I was expecting a sleazy, dirty place a la "village people" song... Boy, was I wrong. The gym here is fantastic. It's clean, all of the machines are new, and all the cardio equipment is hooked up to individual TVs so if you're like me and don't have cable, you can got there to get your fix. There are tons and tons of classes offered each day, from yoga and pilates to aqua aerobics, step, spinning, and cardio-kickboxing. Membership is $46 a month, but its on a sliding scale and you can apply for financial aid to get a cheaper rate. read more

I've been a member for a month and was super excited about this gym. I joined primarily to access a swimming pool for lap swimming. If you are adult who has a typical "office job" work schedule and would like to utilize the pool, join the Rec Center instead. Without exaggeration, I've been turned away from lap swimming in both the Arapahoe and Mapleton pools between the hours of 4-8 EVERY single weekday over four times because of contracted swim teams taking over ALL lanes. At the Rec Center they always keep a number of lanes open. I understand that swim programming is important for youth but why not accommodate both types of patrons? Alternatively all of the "fitness" classes are for the octogenarian members and are not challenging. You could do better at most other places in Boulder. What a shame. Edit: in comment to the response I just received below: lanes are open in the middle of the afternoon and the wee morning hours for adults. That is not "just my schedule" but rather inconvenient for all members who hold traditional working hours. If the Rec has figured it out, why can't you? read more

I've been here for two years, and have not found a better deal. As my brother and I live together, we are able to take advantage of a plan that enables us to split $80 for all that the YMCA has to offer - which is a whole lot. I must admit, I generally only use the Y for the weight floor and indoor running track, but have occasionally paid a visit to the sauna. In my experience, this Y also has a very nice group of people on staff, and quick and helpful maintenance. Typically, these gyms go stale after equipment is damaged, and stays damaged for months. The Y takes care of these issues immediately. You also won't likely be facing overcrowdedness either. Certainly, the most packed time to come in is at 5 pm, but it's still never even been that bad. Come in the early afternoon, and you'll have free roam over the weight floor. read more

While it's not anything fancy, the YMCA of Boulder Valley has just about anything and everything you'd want in a gym. Think of a sport, and they'll find a way to have you play it. Do you play racquetball? Are you looking to practice figure skating? The list goes and on and on... I could spend hours upon days enjoying all the variety of activities they offer. And if you're part of a family, they have an array of discounts, events and adventures for all ages. The locker rooms offer more of this theme with free lock rental, a jacuzzi, steam room and sauna. And all this is only $52/mo for a single adult (1st month free), and there's even better discounts if you sign up with a partner or family. So far, so good. The Boulder Y is nicely remodeled since the days when my kids were in school. My new insurance includes a totally free membership here, so I went in a few weeks ago, signed up, & got a bit of a tour and my membership card. I'm scheduled to meet with my personal trainer on Monday to create a workout plan. This is so cool! September is a good time to, figuratively, turn over a new leaf. The good: Very nice gym and a lot of equipments that are well taken care of. Most of the members are nice and down to earth, it's more like a family gym which I enjoy very much. Location is also convenient. So overall it IS a great gym to work out at. Most of the trainers are also very nice people. The bad: Front desk staff are rude and demanding except for a few. What do you expect when the woman running it doesn't have a sense of manners nor consideration nor sense of customer service? They don't care about how you feel or how to treat people and they are quite condescending, so do not be nice with these people. They'll take it for granted and treat you like they treat college students. I only gave 2 stars because as an athlete mental happiness is important to me and other people who are serious about their well being. When you are hassled with random things every other week and they won't just leave you alone, you'll build the feeling of hatred towards these people. So if you can ignore this and just come in, smile, check in, work out, then leave, it's worth it. read more

What a great deal. They just renovated the "Y" and it looks just like any upscale health club now. They have all the great cardio machines (featuring Cardio Theater on each one for you own personalized TV viewing), weight machines (with electronic workout tracking if you set it up), free weights, swimming pool, hot tub, sauna, basketball court, dance/workout rooms, spinning room, massage room, locker room, showers, etc etc - whatever kinda 'room' you want :-) We have a family membership (4 people) for $70 a month. I've generally been happy with this Y up until today. I've been a member for 3 years, and while I don't work out there as regularly as I should, I have gone many times over the past year. My membership is discounted through my wife's work (yay) and the fee auto deducts from my bank acct. I don't go through my bank statements line by line every month, so I never realized that they mysteriously stopped charging me back in December of last year. So, today when I went to work out I was surprised to learn that I was no longer a member. According to the person with whom I spoke, "your wife cancelled your account in December." In fact, she didn't cancel it. Moreover, I've been there many times over the past year and not once had anybody told me that my membership "was cancelled", so this naturally came as a puzzling surprise. For me to re-join my wife needs to fill out some paperwork and re-add me (first world problem, I know). That's fine, but what actually upsets me is how poorly it was handled. Rather than responding helpfully to my predicament, the employee regarded me with a flat, uncaring, and borderline condescending level of service. There was minimal attempt to fix the issue. It was as though I was perceived as a kind of crook. If I had realized earlier that my card wasn't being charged, I would have happily fixed it. This single exchange left such a bad taste in my mouth. Perhaps the Y isn't the gym for me anymore. read more

I am writing the review specific to the Arapahoe location and specific to ice skating. The ice skating lessons for my kids are amazing. My 3 and 7 year old love them. The teachers are so fun and patient. They even allowed our visiting cousin to join the lesson with my 7 year old. Awesome! The staff has been very kind. I would only give 3 stars for the rest of facility. The locker rooms stink! The smell is just too much. The kids area is just not that great. The equipment is OK and so are the classes but their are better gyms in the area. read more

I came back to the Y after belonging to Colorado Athletic Club for many years. While I don't get unlimited plush towels and body lotion in the dressing room I do get three gyms close to me that almost always have a great class in the time frame I can attend. I live in Lafayette and work in Boulder so I frequent noon time Pilates or dance during the week and the same plus body pump mornings and evening / weekends in Lafayette. It's really kind of perfect and the instructors are absolutely superb. some of them teach at the pricier gyms as well. The Lafayette Y is much newer and nicer and they have an incredible yoga floor upstairs that I haven't seen anywhere else. I will say I wish they had more / maybe better yoga offerings but otherwise I'm very satisfied. When I was at CAC I was paying nearly double for just me and then an extra $17 for reformer pilates. Here my husband and I both belong and it is far cheaper and reformer pilates is included. Just can't beat that. read more

Watch out for the hot tub. A friend of mine was visiting and wanted me to go to the Y with them. I got a 3 day pass. Went into the hot tub a couple times. A few days later I noticed red bumps in patches around my body. I didn't think much of it until I went to the doctor. Doc said I had a type of folliculitis most likely from the hot tub. In other words, a bacterial skin infection. This is actually quite common in hot tubs that are not kept clean. Needless to say I needed to start antibiotics and that was very frustrating over something so trivial as getting in a hot tub. In their defense, there is no way to prove that it did in fact come from their hot tub, but I can't think of anywhere else it could have. I keep a detailed food/activity journal and the Y was the only thing I had done differently in 6 months. Had a clean bill of health until visiting that Y. Will never return. read more

Our children participate in Soccer, Basketball and after school programs with the Y. They love the programs and as parents we like the culture the Y promotes. I work out there in the mornings at 5:30 and find the facility clean and the staff friendly/helpful. It's great to have this valuable resource in our community. read more

If I could vote negative 1 star, I would. Our child is in the BCSIS after-school program through the YMCA of Boulder and the staff has been terrific. This is most important and kept the program from getting minus 5 stars. The negative is that the billing team/dept. is inaccurate, non-responsive, unyielding.... We stay ONLY because we can't find an alternative that affords us the convenience this program has offered. The price is too high and if you're using FSA to minimize the impact, good luck to you. The billing errors combined with non-responsiveness mean the process will be messy at best. The moment we find a viable alternative to this Y program, we'll take it. read more

I've worked at, and been a member for several different gyms over the years, but the YMCA on Mapleton, not only accommodates your needs, but goes out of their way to make things happen! Last week we needed a space to host a self defense seminar that we originally wanted to have outside, and they made last minute accommodations for us to use their studio space. The staff communicated well with each other and with me to make sure everything ran smoothly, and they were extremely supportive in all the ways they could be. I love the Mapleton and Arapahoe YMCAs. I use the YMCA mostly for fitness classes. The cardio, strength training, and combo/boot camp classes they offer are all challenging workouts and the instructors are positive, energetic, and caring. We are members in San Diego, and since they do the program for Y members where you get 10 free visits to any other YMCA in the country for free in a calendar year, we got to experience BV YMCA recently :). I'm fairly sure the gym is inexpensive to join (as ours is in SD), and the facilities are VERY nice. Wish they'd get some of the Precor machines that the Friars rd location in SD has, but I was satisfied with the ellipticals. My husband loved the rowing machines (our gym doesn't seem to have those, at least not dedicated ones!) and the treadmills. Great people & super friendly staff. I am writing this review specifically about the Arapahoe location. For multiple months after school starts, approximately 75 % of the pool, ALL of lap lanes, all of the diving boards and all of the slides are off limits to members because they are rented out to an outside organization from 3:30 to 7:00pm during the week. The weather is still very nice in September and parents show up with their kids after school only to find out that they all have to cram into the shallow end. I know that the Y is supported by outside organizations but to totally shut out members who pay dues year round is shortsided and WRONG ! Instead of all of the 6 lap lanes for Flatirons Swim Club how about 5 leaving 1 lap lane for members ? Seems only fair read more

This gym is the best value for your money in town! There are great cycling body pump and Zumba classes and the members are not judgemental. The staff is super welcoming and the layout is nice. My previous one star review was submitted in Juy. It has been over 6 months since the hot tub has been out of service. Apparently due to severe plumbing infrastructure repairs required under the broken hot tub. We were also told- hard to find repair parts & service personnel to repair this 70's era hot tub. When questioned why a new hot tub installed in a different pool area was not considered........ I was told- that was probably a good idea. As a 20 year member of the YMCA, and frequent user of the hot tub for pain relief due to hip & knee replacements........ this is totally unacceptable. I have patronized the Y since I was a kid. It has gotten even better over the years since they remodeled. I would say it is probably the best gym deal I have ever had, anywhere in the world. I go there to slam the ball against the wall in the racquetball courts (very therapeutic), use the circuit training machines (all new), sit in the steam room occasionally, and take yoga classes. They also have a pool and saunas, massage, etc. My only complaint is with their yoga classes. They have one great teacher and a bunch of other crappy ones. The classes are never consistent because the crappy ones often sub for the good one. Also, it would be nice if they had a M/W/F or T/Th schedule with a consistent teacher for those who work 9-5. As it is, I can really only go on Tuesday nights at 6p. There is a class on Thurs at 6p too but I refuse to take it because the teacher sucks. I love the facility, and the people (who, in my opinion, reflect the broader Boulder community better than any other club or recreation center in a town blessed with many good choices). I find the staff and instructors to be engaged and caring, and my cost of membership to be a decent value. On a recent visit to Lansing, MI, I was pleased to find that the local Y there was happy to honor my home membership from Boulder - at no cost. But what really makes smile is that by joining the Y I've become part of the Y's mission of caring. I sometimes forget when enjoying a workout or yoga class at our well-appointed Mapleton YMCA that as a member I'm supporting a bigger and more important mission than just getting myself into better shape. Serving the community in Y terms means offering a welcoming place for all ages; making sure kids have access to programs and events without regard to their ability to pay; and providing a place where one can focus on healthy living in a more systemic fashion. read more

It's too bad this nice club has such antiquated workout equipment, heating and ventilation equipment, and absolutely filthy workout equipment, and floors! I have complained to management and staff, and was told that they have a four year(!) contract with a cleaning company. Hah, what a joke. In the workout area with the cardio machines and the weightlifting machines, there is visible dirt everywhere. 3 days ago the dirt behind the second row of cardio machines, south of the north windows, was piled nearly half an inch deep with dirt, grime and hair! UGH!!! I had to blow a big hairball off the foot trap pedal b4 I could even climb onto the elliptical trainer! The abductor/adductor machine has dirt all over it, under it, and around it, I'm almost afraid to touch the controls in order to adjust it! The cleaning crew and the staff do not do anything that I can see. That same day the cleaning crew mopped the entire floor with a filthy mop where you could see the dirty mop tracks the whole way up the floor! I don't know if everyone in this place, users and staff alike, walks around with their eyes to the sky so they do not see the dirt, or their house looks like that or what. And right now is flu season as well! They have little spray bottles for the users to clean their machine after use, by using the same already used cleaning rag to go with it! Eeew! My girlfriend informs me that the women's locker room is filthy as well. I am trying to make my voice heard down there, but I don't know if it will help. After their July 4 closure, the pool was too cold for my kids, and remains so. We were told to go to the Arapaho Y, where my son has been stung twice on the slides (not that they can control that). But when I went to cancel, I was a couple days past the two-week deadline, and there was no flexibility.
