UPDATE: After posting this review he began threatening me and adding additional charges when I told him I won't remove the review. I have attached the screenshots if you are curious. I have now paid a total of 155 dollars for a broken laptop. Let me start off saying I know a few things about computers. I spilled a small amount of water near my laptop and it stopped turning on. I figured the mobo was fried but I was too busy to take care of it myself, so I took it here because of the good reviews. This is where the fiasco begins. I told him the story and that I suspected it was the mobo, he then insisted that the mother board is fine and it just "coincidentally" stopped working for an unrelated reason the moment I spilled water near it. I was skeptical but I figured I'd just follow his lead. He said he would "refurbish it" and charged me 85 dollars. Little did I know that "refurbish" actually means "reflow" which is basically where you just melt the solder on the motherboard (using a heat gun or an oven) and pray that it works. So he then tells me the "refurbish" didn't work and it was a bad motherboard (which is what I said in the first place) and I needed to pay to have it replaced. I came here expecting to pay a small service charge to have him replace the hardware and ended up basically just giving him 85 dollars, still left with a broken laptop. When I protested he stated that the oven takes power, and that's why it is justified. He offered to "refurbish" another laptop I had free of charge. I decided against it as I could do it myself, I touched base with him Dec 23rd and told him I have been swamped and haven't been able to come get it. I left it there several months, I then tried texting him March 3rd and he didn't respond, so I showed up at his door March 17th and the machine had been disassembled and sorted into various bins. He told me that it's been months and laughed at me saying I will have to come back another day. He then saw that I posted a one star review and instructed me to remove it or else he would post the entirety of our conversation. I don't mind if he does. When you buy a laptop "refurbished" online that doesn't mean "may or may not work". The definition of refurbish is "to repair". A refurbished laptop means they went through and repaired any defects that caused the machine not to function. A reflow is a patch job, a dice roll, not a repair. and certainly not worth 85 dollars. The part itself costs 80-90 dollars so I basically paid twice as much for no reason and THEN he charged me an additional 70 for a 14 day late fee even though I had asked if I could pick it up 14 days prior and received no response. I don't know if my situation is isolated or if his customer base just isn't technologically literate but this was not a good experience at all for me. I've spread the word and everyone I've talked to agrees and doesn't understand why I'm not more pissed off about it so I felt obligated to post my experience. Pardon the long review but I want to be as accurate regarding my experience as possible. I contacted Boulder pc when I ran into a boot loop of its my acer PC. I would get to the start screen get a boot error and then the pc would attempt a repair, fail and then reboot over and over. For this reason I brought my PC to Boulder PC. I had important files on this comp that constituted several months of work in excel. I should have backed these files up and did not. Initially the owner had suggested that this would be a simple repair not costing an excess of $75. In about 48hrs the owner called me to inform me that I would need a new hard drive and a clean install of windows. I understand that he could not have predicted this and agreed to the service with the owner claiming that he was confident that the data could be restored from the old HD. Up to this point he had been very prompt in updating me on his progress and was very professional. I even sent an email to him letting him know I intended to write him a very positive review. I payed the owner the agreed 65$ for service (I purchased the HD elsewhere) and he said he would be in a touch. After a few days I asked how things were progressing and he informed that he had not yet made any progress but that he was confident he would be able to tweak his programs towards success. At this point I made no contact for over a week and then reached out via text twice without response over two days. After another few days I left a voice mail asking him to please update me regard progress (others were involved in the work these files were for and I wanted to provide them with a status update). After 10 days of not hearing from the owner I sent the following email "Hi there, So I have, since 01/26/15, heard nothing regarding the status of data recovery on my drive. I have now sent 2 texts asking for an update and called and left a message and have heard nothing back. If more time is required that is fine, I understand that these things are complicated and outside my breadth of understanding and as such I don't pretend to be able to evaluate how long they ought to take. All that said I am fairly upset with not having heard back from you despite multiple attempts to be updated. It is not the timing that is upsetting but rather that as a paying customer that my requests for info would go unanswered despite multiple attempts over such an interval. Prior to this I had been very pleased by the quality of customer service provided and prompt responses. Could you please respond and let me know what the plan is and where we stand? I get that you are likely quite busy and I can understand that but no correspondence with a customer over this interval despite multiple attempts on my part is, to me, unacceptable. Additionally the files I am in most need of are in the documents folder and the download folders (one on desktop and the other the stock download folder). If there are the only files that can be recovered I can live with that. There are others involved in this project and i need to be accountable to them regarding the progress of data recovery. " To which I received this email in return "Believe it or not it something I continue to work on when I have time to dedicate to it. Quite frankly it's a lost cause so my extra effort is more about testing new software for its capability. In truth, with this drive you're going to need to send it to a lab that has a clean room and is designed for data retrieval. The costs of such is exorbitant running into the thousands of dollars. You can do that or you can be patient and hopeful that one day I will run across a new piece of software and it'll work and I'll get something back for you. Your call...while you decide which direction to go in, lab or patience, please know that if I actually do one day come across the software that gives us joy joy, I WILL let you know. Not much else I can do except tell you your not being charged for my efforts thus far. You can be as upset as you want, you've got better things to with your time as do I. Again, when I have news for you, you will be the first to know" What is upsetting to me is not failed data recovery or even that it took to long to but rather the lack of communication and the unprofessional tone of his response via email. I was also displeased that in previous correspondence he seemed to suggest that there was a reasonable chance of getting my data back and that it was som thing that he was actively working on. Had I known that the outlook changed I would have understood and had started immediately ion making up for my lost work. I didn't back up the HD and that is my fault. He can't predict what files can be extracted and knew this going in. This just seems to me to be a poor way to treat a customer. read more

Maybe my situation was a fluke, but he had my computer for months, and I always had to initiate contact when I started to wonder if he had left the state. He always had a reason, and he was always "just about to call me." I actually never even got my computer back from him, but since I did get my hard drive back I got tired of pursuing him and decided to drop it. Definitely not going back. read more

If I could give zero stars I would. Took my computer to boulder PC to get a new hard drive... Three weeks later he had still not fixed it. When I picked it up to take to a different repair store I was informed that Boulder PC had actually damaged my internals more, and ended up costing extra to get my computer fixed. Boulder PC is run out of a small dirty and messy apartment. There are customers laptops and computer parts on the floor, in his kitchen, in his bed. He was rude, disrespectful and I have to assume that he rights fake reviews to give himself more credibility. Over all it was the worst experience I can imagine in IT repair. After taking my computer to Boulder PC he told me I needed a new hard drive which he installed quickly. He said he could do data recovery for more money about 75-125. This is when things went wrong. I told him to go ahead with the data recovery when I picked up my pc with the new hard drive. It has been 2 weeks now and I have texted him, called and left messages for him, even stopped by his apartment to see if he was able to recover any data. About 10 days into this I sent him several messages that I wanted to to pick up the old hard drive to take it to someone else and try to recover the data. Still no response. Now I am worried about my data being in the hands of this person. Do not take your computer to this person. read more

Our 4 year old computer was doing some strange things for a while before it got completely fried with a sudden power disconnect. John was able to get life out of it for a couple of minutes before it was declared dead. I needed to pull precious images off the harddrive, and get a new desktop. I was able to get a new discounted Dell desktop through John and get the hard drive transferred over to the new machine for $420 within a week. I have had motherboards and hard drives die before and I thought this was a good price and quickly done without losing any precious data. John is hard and fast worker, very honest, and eager to help. On one computer, he thoroughly warned me that he may not accomplish what he was trying to do when I picked it up, but dammit if the machine wasn't practically good as new. On a screen replacement, he had me buy parts myself- wasn't looking to screw me over on marked up costs- now that's integrity. Not a slick tech place in all the right ways. He then set up several programs which were very technical, transferred all data and had it ready for my son 3 days later. If you are looking for honest, friendly, transparent, professional, skilled computer service DO NOT choose Boulder PC!! After experiencing myriad issues with various computers and related devices in our office, we called John to come out and take a look, based on the company's professed knowledge of both PC and Mac (we run both), experience, and low rates. But instead of a friendly service professional, willing to listen and patiently work through the problems we were paying to have solved in an efficient manner, we got a hot-tempered, snarky, and frankly, rude, individual, bursting with immediate opinions and criticisms. Instead of communicating what he was doing and walking through problems and solutions with us, John abruptly jumped from machine to machine, ultimately solving nothing and further confusing the issues we had already been experiencing, even when we presented the solution that we would have liked, with the request that someone simply execute it. There was a complete lack of any professionalism whatsoever, becoming verbally nasty when we did not care for his "superior" configuration of our network, and displacing numerous files and emails without any indication as to why or to where. Boulder PC effectively wasted half of our work day, making sure to charge us for every second. Not only did they help us accomplish ABSOLUTELY NOTHING, but our computer troubles are now WORSE. THIS BUSINESS IS A SCAM!!! The hinge on my laptop was starting to not work as well as when I bought the laptop so I took the laptop to John to fix it. When I went to pick up my laptop a few days later he told be that he had fixed the hinge but that I have multiple issues with the laptop and that is why when it turns on only a white screen shows. I told him that the laptop worked perfectly fine before I brought it to him and that I would like to have him fix what I could only assume he had broken. He denied any part in making the laptop only show an all white screen (it is impossible to do anything on the laptop on this screen, and no, external monitors do not work on the laptop now). I explained to him that it would not make sense for me to have him repair the hinge on my laptop if the whole thing did not work in the first place. Not to mention the laptop was on and running when I dropped it off to him. I offered many different solutions to try solve the problem, but he wasn't having any of it. He denied everything that I said and would not give the laptop back until I paid him. After a long argument with John who would not budge on his stance I paid him, and got my laptop back (although its now just a useless piece of complicated circuitry that does not work). This guy is a scam do not take anything to him. He solves your little problem then breaks something larger, so you now have to pay him all this money to fix that too. Its a bummer there are people out there like this, but that's just the way it is I guess. read more

After an hour of phone tech support through HP, they diagnosed my problem as a bad hard drive needing replacement. Before I committed to buying a new one (along with an extended warranty) I took my laptop to John at Boulder PC. He checked it out, told me I might not actually need a new hard drive and by the end of the day had repaired the problem. I was only without my computer for fewer than 24hrs and the cost was very reasonable. And I didn't need a new hard drive! read more

Listen... The guy is quirky. But he's perfectly nice, and knows more about PCs than I ever will. Yes, the place was filthy when I went there. It was very awkward at times, and I almost didn't meet up with him because he was late returning, which he wasn't communicative about. All those things are really not a big deal. He took apart my Dell laptop in front of me, diagnosed the HD as having minor water damage, told me my only real hope was to replace a very specific piece with the exact same piece. He said when/if he could find this piece, he would let me know. No charge whatsoever at that time, for about 45 minutes of his expertise. Has not contacted me in months -- meanwhile, I did some of my own research and took the laptop to another business, who told me the same stuff without looking into my computer. Turns out the part I need is just very hard to come by. So, I really don't have much to complain about. Wish he was better at communicating. read more

I highly recommend this place for any sort of advice or work needed on your computer. I have been in here multiple times and not only are their prices better than anything you will get in Boulder but they have been honestly looking out what is best for me, even if that means turning away business! I am not too knowledgeable about computers and John has always taken the time to explain everything to me in layman detail. This place is great and I tell all my friends to go here with pc issues. When this guy repaired my computer he lost all the data on it. He was slow, didn't return calls and the computer needed to be brought back a second time. He is not just quirky he is down right obnoxious. The place stinks from animals and is filthy. It is a dirty apartment. My wife had problems with her computer last year that the big-box store could not fix. She went several times to them with the same problem. She found bolder PC on the web. She was a bit nervous using someone she didn't know to fix her computer. He was able to fix the problem for her quickly and she hasn't had a problem since. Recently my computer went blank when I turned it on. This stressed me out because it was not backed up and it was packed with photos along with work information. I gave John a call he told me to bring it over. He gave me a very fair not to exceed price. After he fixed the situation he felt it wasn't running as quickly as it should. He asked me to leave it with him a bit longer. He ended up swapping out the hard drive. I picked it up the next day. He honored his price even when I asked him if he wanted to charge me more given this was not anticipated. This is a well-deserved five-star review. read more
