Lisa and her designer created something that matched the rough thoughts we had, but went several steps beyond, making it better than what I had imagined in several ways. We started with some tired, neglected landscaping containing a lot of (sick) grass, and some drainage issues, and from that they created a mini nature park in our backyard, including a river-rock-filled dry creek bed, a packed gravel walkway around it, built-in drip irrigation, lighting, as well as a plan for trees and shrubs that will invite birds, bees, butterfiles, etc. This plan was executed by a company she frequently partners with - Oregon Outdoor Living - and they were great to work with as well. The workers are highly skilled and diligent. We're looking forward to see how it grows out! Communication has been excellent all of the way through. This comes across very clearly in every decision and choice he makes to select materials, plants, products, etc. He also consulted me before every design decision was made, from the the height of the step leading to the backyard, to the exact color of the cement, to the exact placement of the plants before the digging took place. Another designer may have gone ahead and planted the plants per the architectural design, but Harley has this innate understanding that people change their minds when they see things actually laid out, or after they have time to think about the project as it it progressing. It is this insightful understanding about human nature, that greatly reduces stress during the project as you come to trust and appreciate these rare qualities that you don't find in most people. I hired Green Zone to dig a ~45' trench to a shed in my backyard at 2' deep for electrical conduit. He initially bid the job at one day and $810. I made the mistake of assuming he had a trencher and other equipment for this task. He showed up on day 1 with a gas auger for post holes, not a trencher. After a couple hours on day 1, he said the cost would actually be $1500 , nearly double the original cost because of some unexpected difficulty with rocks and other debris. He spent a ton of time trying to get the auger to start/restart throughout the day. Of course he wasn't able to finish that day, and said he'd come back with electric tools more appropriate for the job. On the second day, he came back with the same gas auger, though it seemed to be in somewhat better running order. About halfway through that day, he said he wouldn't be able to dig a straight trench because of debris. He eventually got someone to bring an electric saw he used to remove this debris, to his credit. At the end of the second day, he said he was going to come back with a mini excavator to finish the job. On the third day, he did come back with one, but it was extremely large for the space and resulted in a completely destroyed yard surface, a damaged structure in the yard, and concerns about the shed foundation.

In the end, after seeing the final detailed plan that Jeff provided we couldn't be more convinced that we made the right choice having a professional do this work. Back on 2019 I had an irrigation system built by a landscape company in Portland. I recently…read moreneeded some work on it and called them but they indicated they no longer do work in Vancouver, but when I asked if there was anyone they would recommend, they said Simple Lawns. I had a problem with two leaks in the irrigation system. You could see water getting into the valve boxes when you turned on two of my zones. My suspicion was that the water pipes coming out from the valve to the irrigation tubing had broken when I had a contractor install a pumped sewer system last fall. The trench for the sewer pipe went across the water outlet pipes from the valve boxes. I called Simple Lawns to see if they could come work in fixing the leaks. They were able to schedule a visit by their irrigation expert within a few days. I paid a deposit which was for the service call to diagnose the problem and assess how much it would cost to fix. The employee came and looked it over and was able to fix it right away. He had it fixed within an hour or two. I was surprised it was possible to fix it so quickly, and he indicated the cost would probably be just the service call fee or a little more. The one slightly odd thing was I didn't get a email from the company to indicate the job was completed and that there were no additional charges. But the repairs were successful and they didn't send any additional bill, so I figured that was the situation. I was dreading trying to get those leaks fixed and I was amazed how quickly they fixed them and that it cost way less than I expected it would.

I was fortunate enough to see some of their handiwork at an event held in the yard of someone who had previously discovered them. Hearing about what that space had looked like before and seeing the magical landscape that had been created there, I knew my wife and I needed to meet Nick Lake. Since then, he and his fantastic team have completely transformed our outside space into the most beautiful part of our home. Nick is an absolute treasure trove of inspiration and information. From the moment we first met with him, we knew we wanted to proceed as soon as possible. We didn't have pressing issues that made landscaping work an "emergency" (e.g., no water problems directly related to the yard), so an outside project easily could have waited. We also did not have a high level of horticultural knowledge, nor did we even know exactly what we wanted when we first started talking to Nick. We knew our yard had "potential", i.e. it was a smallish but not tiny, pretty drab space that wasn't particularly functional and wasn't much to look it. It was our conversation with Nick and his vision for the yard that made us want to move forward at that time and turn it into something great. Since then, with a combination of "demo" work, mulching, softscaping and hardscaping, every aspect of our yard has become a thing of beauty that we see and enjoy every single day. Throughout the process, Nick and his team have worked closely with us on every decision and every detail. Nick plays an integral role in all parts of the process and communication with him and his team has always been easy, fun, rewarding, and thorough. There have never been any surprises in terms of cost or how something was done. As a result, everything is exactly what was discussed and we could not be any happier with it. Nick certainly deserves the lion's share of the credit as the owner of the business, the mastermind behind the work, and a hands-on contributor to the implementation. That said, huge shout out for his entire crew and honorary mention for Tulsi, the smart and adorable dog that might make some appearances if Tashana is working and you give the green light. Every member of the team brings something important to the job, always including hard work but also creativity and individual areas of interest and expertise. The result is frequent flashes of brilliance and pleasant surprises throughout all phases of a project. It isn't a great time of year for pictures as I'm writing this (I'll add more in the spring) but below is a stone bench that took form during one day's work. This was not even part of the original plan, just an off-the-cuff idea (thanks to Kyle, Tommy, Daniel and Tashana if memory serves) to which we could have said "no thanks" if we were that foolish. Even once there are more pictures to add, they can only do so much. Nick knows he is always welcome to swing by and show off the beauty, which keeps getting better with every growth season. Whether we are sitting in the yard, walking through it to get to or from the house, or just staring at it through a window, we count ourselves lucky that this is actually part of our home. I cannot recommend Earth Ecology strongly enough. With Nick and his crew, you will get everything that you wanted and a lot more. As happened for us, you will get done with each step and be so happy that you decided to go for it, and occasionally scratch your head wondering if there is anything else you can do out there.
