This really wonderful bookstore has been a mainstay of the Pearl Street mall in Boulder for decades. Strengths include a massive stock of books, stretching over three floors (the store is much larger than it looks from the street front), very helpful staff, and an extraordinarily thoughtfully curated selection of book suggestions at the front of the store. Topic coverage is extremely broad so you'll likely find whatever you're looking for, and also likely leave with some unexpected discoveries. Terrible experience. They had me wait 20m at the register because I paid half with a gift card and they didn't know how to process the other half, only to be told at the end that there was no way for them to process the rest. Frustrated I wasn't getting ANYTHING after that ordeal, I said "ok well thanks for wasting my time," and the manager literally said "you're very welcome." He also refused to let me know if the half-transaction went through, saying I'd have to call THEM for a refund if it ended up going through. The employees were very cordial, but that guy is a stain on the entire store. read more

This place is pretty cool. If you are a book lover and find yourself in Boulder, you have to check it out. I mean, there's almost an entire room dedicated just to calendars. I usually have the hardest time finding a small pocket calendar for my purse but here, there were so many choices, the difficulty became being able to make a choice! There are so many floors and rooms branching off that I could spend the whole day here. I think it's bigger than many public libraries! Too bad there isn't anything like this back home. read more

I am preparing to move and decided to donate or sell most of my sci-fi paperback collection. I found Boulder Book Store and decided to go there since they offered a cash payment as opposed to store credit which since i"m leaving Colorado wouldn't be of much value. They did buy some of my books and donated the remainder, with my prior agreement, to a charity. Absolutely unsure what's happened to this place - the tl:dr is that there is no customer service. I had preordered a copy of a new book via their website. I received the shipping notification, and then an out for delivery notification whereupon I noticed that it was out for delivery in a city roughly 50 miles south of me. I called the store and asked that they verify the shipping address was correct. Was told that media mail sometimes takes weird routes (fair enough) and to wait and see if it was delivered, but that if I had a delivery problem it was between me and USPS. I was also assured that there was only one address associated with the order and it was impossible that it shipped to the wrong place. When the package was delivered, I went through the 800 number for the postal service where I was able to verify that the address did not match mine. I decided I'd try emailing this time, and when I went to look for the order realized the book I was expecting hadn't even been released yet. I emailed these details to the email address indicated at the bottom of my order - no response. Then, on the release date I receive an email that my book is in and I'd been sent tracking for a different order. At this point I'd resigned myself to initiating a chargeback via PayPal, but responded immediately reiterating my concerns, my initial call and email, and telling them I'd no longer like the order. The next day the damn thing shows up. So now I've driven to the store itself, paid for parking, and attempted to return the book. I was told there are several email addresses and maybe they went to the wrong one (sure). Then I'm told to leave the book and a note because the order has to be refunded the same way it was placed and they'll "work on it." Not holding my breath at this point but at least I have an email trail and picture of the return. Seriously disappointing. read more

Portland has Powell's, New York has Strand, and Boulder has...uhhh...Boulder. OK, it's not as big as either of the other two or as storied, but Boulder Bookstore has that same reader-trumps-browser vibe that an indie bookstore needs to have in order to gain cred among the locals. It's conveniently located in the center of all the foot traffic in the city, Pearl Street pedestrian mall. There are three floors, though my immediate favorite was the downstairs where they organized all the armchair travel books in a cozy, arse-friendly environment, as well as an expansive used book section. Even an outsider like me can get lost in a bookstore this well stocked. The place - as compact as it is- engulfs you with the sweep of literacy. Wow, I like that...the sweep of literacy. read more

For the bulk of my childhood, I grew up without a television and books were my entertainment. Most afternoons, I could be found camping out at the College Hill Bookstore. The Boulder Book Store holds such a similar and lovely vibe as that happy time. So many little gems tucked between the shelves. Thoughtfully recommended books. People sitting in the aisles, immersed. What a great local bookstore! It has three levels and a great variety. It's strength is in its recommendations by staff and best sellers in local bookstores nationwide. I appreciate th descriptions of books written on cards. It can be hard to find good books in such a large market, but this store helps to narrow down the options. I purchased Mongrels, a book about werewolves, because I kept seeing recs for it, and sure enough this store recommended it as well. Staff are great. The cashier explained fidget devices to the guest in front of me and I LOVED that she explained it correctly - how people with ADHD and on the spectrum benefit from it the most. I thanked her for being aware of mental/cognitive health needs when it was my turn. Great books and a smart staff - what more do you need? read more

I turned into Boulder Book Store off the Pearl Street Mall on a whim. It was a great decision! This three story bookstore is chock full of new and used books, carefully categorized in various rooms throughout this homey maze of a building. There are reading spots, chairs and even tables scattered throughout, as well as a healthy selection of the standard bookstore gift selection fare: lots of different journals, reading lights, book marks, magnets and so on. This book store reminds me of Powell's on the west coast or an updated version of Baldwin's book barn on the east coast. You will love it, you will find something you need to buy right now, I promise!! read more

Great book store! 3 stories and so many different options and genres of books. I was happy to find a large area of books about Colorado to check out. On each floor there is a sale area which is pretty cool and they also buy books there, so you can make more room in your bookcase. This is an absolutely amazing bookstore! I love that it has so much personality to it and the people working there are just so nice as well. When I visit Boulder I make it a priority to stop at the Boulder Bookstore multiple times ! I love that it is independently owned and has a wonderful section of books for anyone and everyone. Visiting Boulder Book Store on a Sunday (free parking!) after brunch is our new thing. I really enjoy all of the selection, nooks and crannies, SALE tables smattered throughout the store, and of course the helpful staff. The second floor is truly magical - it's a former ballroom. Spend some time getting lost on this place is, you won't regret it if you enjoy reading and shopping local. They do have a rewards program but you have to buy into it so if you are an avid reader/buyer it could be worth the investment. read more

Boulder Book Store is probably one of my favorite places in the state of Colorado. I don't get up to Boulder super often, but when I do I make sure and visit. I love that I'm supporting a local bookstore, which in this era of complete and total e-book fixation, are sadly becoming more and more scarce. They have a wonderful selection of a diverse variety of books and magazines as well as fun gifts. It's a very welcoming place. I can, and have, spent hours here. I do have a note for those reviewers who found it pertinent to point out how certain items here (such as bumper stickers) mostly cater to one political perspective. This is a private business, and as such, they are entitled to express their views and carry whatever merchandise they see fit. Maybe buy a book on the Constitution and the First Amendment next time you're here? Not to mention, the owners of this business are probably pretty savvy to have been around for so long; therefore, they know their market well and are simply choosing to stock items that they know will sell in Boulder as opposed to ones that would linger on the shelves. read more

Show me a local bookstore and you'll show me a happy place to be! This shop is located on Pearl Street and it made it easy to stop in while we were exploring the Pearl Street Mall. Neatly arranged with books for everyone, we wandered through for about a half hour. I liked that there were suggestions on the shelves as well so you could get a better feel for some of their titles. There was also a nice journal and card selection available. Don't forget to check out the sales rack for a potential good deal! read more

With the rate of change in Boulder and Denver happening so rapidly these days, it is so refreshing to find that the Boulder Book Store is still the same place that it has been for so many years. I have been coming here since 1994, and the interior is still so much the same. I love the children's area, the downstairs sections, and upstairs too! I have been to special author events upstairs, and have found some amazing older books here on sale, similar to what you will find in Denver at theTattered Cover. The bookstore used to have a coffee shop attached, and unfortunately, that closed many years ago. However, the feel of the bookstore is still the same, despite the demise of that dark, but warm atmosphere you could enter from the side wall in the store. I could spend several hours here perusing all of the books they have on offer, and feel so comfortable doing so. So glad this space is still here and is a huge icon on the Pearl Street Mall. I always feel a sense of excitement just walking in the doors. especially entering through the children's section and making my way up front, and then to the rest of the store. Really, the best part of the mall, by far. read more

This is a magical place on Pearl Street that my whole family (from elementary school all the way up to Boomer) loves to visit. We can get lost browsing and choosing books there for hours. It's hard to limit our purchases because we are such bibliophiles, but we usually end up with a stack of goodies to take home at the end of each trip. Such a gem! read more

My husband had to say Good Morning after walking pass them and then one of them said GM back. That upset me, because it's rude! Came here for an event and the girl setting the event up was so rude. When we came in we asked her what time she would be ready for check in for tickets. She told us "a very long time." With attitude. We did come in a hour and 15 mins early thinking the event started at 6p but it was really 6:30p. She could have told us that she wasn't ready yet and what time the event was at since we had the wrong time. We thought about leaving and not staying for the event. She also did not come up to us after to help us get our books ready to be signed like she did for everyone else. After her attitude issue she completely ignored us. We did interact with a gentleman on the floor and at the register who was super super nice and empathetic. I won't return to this store for an event again. We were singled out for asking one simple question because we were earlier than we thought the time was at. Not sure why the lady was so mean but it really threw me off and made my experience bad. read more

Comic Book Guy: "Greatest. Bookstore. Ever." Puts every Chicago bookstore to shame. The profusion of different themed rooms makes wandering the place a pure joy. Ball Room, North Room, Northeast Room, etc. make you feel you are wandering through an eccentric millionaire's summer home and add-on library. There is a real mystery to the place. Cute bookstore with nice unique selection. Unfortunately it was a complete turnoff to walk into the store while the manager was loudly giving the employees an anti-theft training. And then the employees immediately grilled a nice lady walking INTO the store that set off their theft detection alarm. Between that and the restrooms being closed to patrons, it was a total turnoff to be in the store. The selection and charm absolutely does not make up for the atmosphere from the staff/management words and actions. read more

There are two things I dig other than the books at this creative shop: The speakers/events and the cards. BBS has some great and creative cards for those special and not so special occasions. For example, last year I sent myself a card and it made me really happy and grateful... I realized how much I really did love myself, and I am not sure I would have realized that without the purchase of the card from BBS. The speaker series are great, and are usually upstairs, which is also a great room and layout that make you feel like you are in a rich man's personal library. If you get to the talk late when there is a very popular speaker, there will be no more seats and you will have to circle around the speaker. After an hour, I just have to sit on the ground and I can no longer see the speaker... Point of the story, get there early. The best thing this store is good for is not only the books, but how long you can lose your boyfriend in the store while you shop up a storm all over Pearl Street. Just tell him that you will be no longer than 45 minutes, then take about three hours to hit up all the essentials. He might wonder what is taking so long when he finally decides he has to pee, but by that time you will be already texting him to meet you outside. I agree with the other reviews, the next-door coffee shop is a great addition; however, good luck on finding a seat on a popular night or on the weekends. Besides being helpful and friendly staff are also well-informed and provide good recommendations. Great kids section. Street cred has slightly faded due to lack of pretentiousness in sales people. The best bookstore I have found in Colorado. Power nerd (said with love) at every corner. From Aaron Burr to Zombies, they have the books and the mettle to help you find them. To me, bookstores are about ambiance. Barnes and Noble built a (now rickety) empire by adding cushy chairs and pendant lighting to their 50,000 square feet of cheaply constructed big box stores. But the Boulder Book Store is housed in a splendid old building with soaring ceilings, multi floors accessed by open staircases with thick old wood banisters. The top floor is my favorite, and almost cathedral like bird nest with cozy alcoves. Definitely worth a couple hours of browsing. read more

Finally got around to visiting the Boulder Book Store and we loved it! We brought both kids along and they have a HUGE selection of new and used books. I think anything you could want--they have! Very friendly service. It's a little tight in there during the weekends when it's busy so I recommend going on the weekdays when it's slower so you have space to take your time and browse. This is an awesome shop if you want newer titles and are looking for a used copy - they have tons of them! If you are a used book hunter looking for some more vintage titles, then go elsewhere, this isn't that kind of place. This shop has an awesome location (off Pearl St.), tons of selection, and lots of room to wander (3 floors). If I lived in Boulder, I am guessing it would be my go-to shop. We decided to stroll through Pearl Street and came upon this bookstore. I have always loved bookstores so in we went and within a few minutes, I was able to find the book I've been looking everywhere (but it was sold out in San Diego), it's called Brain Rules. Anyway, I grabbed it up with a Boulder magnet and off to the counter I went to pay for it. I was so happy they had my book. Prices were decent and I'm glad they have a used book section as well. I walked over to the cafe next door and sat down with my father-in-law and husband and chatted it up a bit over lattes and hot chocolate, very cozy atmosphere and very friendly staff. read more

Really nice bookstore. Nice shelves, easy to find things. Minus one star for lack of good writing on Classical music. Used and New are mixed in with each other, with remainders shelves all around. They also run a nice reading series and a monthly calendar detailing those series. The shop is next to the Bookend Cafe, I believe. It's sort of funny that there is an electronic beeper between the bookstore and the cafe, but I guess technically when you leave the store you enter the cafe, so it's the proper place for it to be. On the first floor, you find used books on the right hand shelf, with very good $1-$3 books on the bottom shelves underneath a middle table which itself houses remainders. Oh, take note of the room that houses the spirituallty, yoga, meditation, sex, psychology, Buddhist stuff. The room was cultivated to reflect the subject matter of the books sititng in this room.
