It's good to take note of their weekly specials and plan your meals accordingly. Yesterday I tried out a few of their sit down items like their steak tartare and French fries. Not bad at all but the tartare was lacking something and I don't think it would hurt if they offered more toasted baguette points for the tartare. Fries were fine. Decor is gentrified vintage shabby chic. Mismatching grommetted chairs, Formica tables , and vintage glassware in display and for sale. You don't come here everyday but it hit me how much Verdun has changed since I moved here. Before Verdun Beef, it was an Italian sandwich counter that also had amazing gelato. Before that, it was the old Cafe Baobab and before that it was one of the last secondhand English bookstores in the Southwest. It's kind of sad that the old Verdun is quickly disappearing.

On Saturday I finally dropped by to pick up a cheddar mushroom sandwich for lunch, and honestly it was one of the best sandwiches I've had in a long time! The fresh bread hosted a sizable crunchy patty made out of shiitake mushrooms and a delicious edamame spread. It was tangy, hearty and one of those meals that any omnivore would crave. For dessert, I chose a caramel chocolate tart. It tasted heavenly. The sweet oozy caramel balanced the bitter chocolate well, with the thin homemade crust giving it the perfect crunch. They have pique-nique tables out front and only allow 3 customers inside at a time, so it felt very safe. Hand sanitizer is also provided upon entering. Apparently their waffles are epic so I have to remember to pop back in on a Sunday! Btw, Wellington Street is pedestrian-only for the summer so I'd make a day out of this outing and just wander on the promenade. Verdun has so many wonderful restaurants, antique stores and cute unique boutiques that are just waiting to be discovered.

The owner, Patrick Loyau, owner of this butcher shop in the Jean-Talon market, knows how to make a business succeed. He bought the premises on rue Mozart in 1994, at the age of 24. When he opened the store, he was not yet a butcher.... his employees taught him everything....so hiring the right people is always the best strategy for a good enterprise. For nearly 20 years, this small butcher's shop has many loyal customers that do not hesitate to weave their way between its crowded aisles in exchange for its quality products (such as its famous marinated flank steak) and the friendly service of its personnel. I used to buy my meat products in supermarkets, but they do not get close to the high-quality level of this place. It is not cheap, but good meat will never be. One thing seriously lacking, though, are options for awesome sandwiches. Charcuteries Viens just opened a few days ago. Their offering is pretty limited: hand made cold cuts such as porchetta, ham and dry-cured sausages, as well as a few choices of sandwiches made on order which you'll take to go, as they're not expecting you to eat there. I tried their ham sandwich featuring their handcrafted ham (prosciutto cotto style with a nice fat cap), a few slides of Comtomme cheese by La Station de Compton, pickles and mustard. At $10 for two small sandwiches, it's a pretty good value. And it's pretty good tasting, too! What's lacking is perhaps a choice of one or two side salads for a more complete meal. No need for something fancy, a tangy red cabbage slaw, or a sweet beet salad would work beautifully. It may very well become one of my regular spots in the area to grab lunch!

Luckily for us, there's already a wealth of charcuterie in the Plateau, so the more the merrier, no? Mr. Phillip Viens comes from a pedigree of working with DNA, Maison Publique, and supplying charcuterie for Toqué and other restos, so I was really looking forward to trying their fare. When I first arrived, there was a photographer shooting a big chunk of porchetta at the front window. I'M IN THE RIGHT PLACE. They won't offer the full service in terms of meats, instead specializing in strictly charcuterie. I picked up a chorizo, fennel saucisson, some fresh pork sausages, and a bit of head cheese/sopressata. The best word I could use to describe their meats is restraint. When asked what was in their fresh pork sausages, they replied, pork, seasonings. "We really want the quality of our pork to shine." And shine it does, with just enough to accompany it in terms of salt et al. I think it might not be to everyone's taste, but it's still delicious. Personally, I prefer the saucisson from Lawrence and Champfleuri, but it's still excellent. The chorizo has a nice, deep smokey heat, but more from paprika than any chili (was there any chili?). Generally, the meats here are not salted as liberally as the others, both old (Fairmount, Vito, Champfleuri, Maison du Rotî) or new (Lawrence), which I prefer in the fresh stuff. I'll be sure to be back to try their porchetta and terrines.
