Just amazingly helpful service from an individually owned store. I actually go here for CO2 tank refills for my aquascaping hobby as he beats the brakes off of Airgas for price and speed. CO2 makes my aquarium plants grow very fast and waiting a few days for an overpriced airgas fill. They were 33% cheaper than Airgas and you get it done on the spot. This dude was so friendly and cool he made me want to start brewing beer. I live over the hill but after chatting with him a few minutes I decided it was worth going to support independent small business, especially in the DIY space, in addition to the price. So I got this wild idea to make beer after I had some craft beer from Mundaka's Chef Brandon. A Belgian Blonde that wowed me. Chef Brandon said I made that in my garage. So after looking online and watching videos on YouTube led me to Bottoms Up. I walked in the store and noticed they had everything you need to make your own craft beer... from wort chillers, brew kettles, yeast, hops and so much more. Emerged from the backroom was a gentleman named Duane who was way chill and super helpful. I was just there looking around and ended up purchasing a 15 gallon Brew Built kettle. Duane was super knowledgeable and indicated that he holds classes for beer making which was a plus for someone like me thinking about jumping into the hobby. I'm am buying all my equipment over time and I will find myself returning the this store and picking Duane's brain. Laid back and way cool to check out for yourself. Cheers! read more

I love, love, love this place. Yes, finally... at last... there is a home brew shop in Monterey County. The first time I ventured there I met the owner who is friendly with great A++ customer service. You get the vibe that he is happy to be there, passionate about what he is doing and overall appreciative of your business. When walking in, he is immediately friendly and welcoming. The other fellow who works there also rocks. We mainly went there to see if we could pick up some organic grains. They had exactly what we were looking for. While he was crushing the grains, I perused the store. They not only sell a variety of barley for beer making and all the goods needed to make beer, they also seem to stock a number of herbal supplies including anise, star anise, juniper, coriander, orange peel, lemon peel etc. Note, the orange peel sold there has a bit of the rind still attached, the lemon peel does not. I can't remember if I saw fennel or wormwood but I suspect it was there as well. They had a really cool poster hanging up of all the beer types as well as some cool yeast posters. This place is new to the area. For locals looking for beer supplies, I highly recommend this place especially since Monterey County has been lacking this type of shop in the past. read more

I no longer have to postpone ordering items to make up for shipping costs or drive for an hour or more because I forgot to order one item. I cannot say enough about these guys. Very knowledgeable, always respond to calls or emails, quicker than most people I do business with. Very patient and understanding. I hadn't brewed in over 30 years but they made me feel so comfortable with the "new and improved" process that I haven't looked back yet. About to brew our 5th or 6th beer and with these guys help we're batting .833. Couldn't help infecting one beer, it was a sanitation thing we didn't completly understand. Stopped by Bottoms Up today with my wife after finding out about it through a craigslist ad they had posted. I went in looking only for a 3 gallon carboy and walked out with the carboy, some Centennial Hops rhizomes and the ingredients for my next all grain brew batch (Nut brown ale). Duane was working the shop. He was super helpful getting everything together for me. He was super excited and super friendly answering all of my novice questions with ease. He had a sample of a prickly pear wheat beer he had made that was tasty. They have a huge selection of different grains lining one of the walls. A fridge storing yeasts and hops (pellet and whole). And a mixed assortment of other home brew items for cider, wine and mead. They're prices are pretty on par with everywhere else and probably less when you start factoring shipping costs into the equation. Awesome customer service, awesome attitude, awesome place.
