The accommodations are tidy, the locale in the old walled city carries the elusive must of history, and the owners are easily approachable and friendly. Oh yeah, 18 pounds a night too, lest I forget. I was in a 6-bed dorm in April, but I only had one roommate for two nights and one night where I ruled the roost. I saw and talked to a few other people who stayed in other rooms at breakfast, held in the attractive cellar. It seems everyone who visits here is in the midst of some wild Welsh adventure, so it was nice to share stories. Linens/blankets are provided, and a variety of shampoos are plentiful for the showers. Just have your towel and you need nothing more. About the surroundings: Caernarfon is a small town and you can get everywhere within a 5-minute walk. Bus connections take you pretty much everywhere in the region (you're 20 minutes from Snowdon) and the celebrated steam train heads south to Porthmadog daily. A fair amount of restaurants, and you're within reach of both the estuary and the castle. I'm not going to lie, though - you'll see a fair amount of boarded-up shops, and when I arrived on an empty grey evening I wasn't sure I picked the best base. But the remaining days were colorful and people were about, which made everything more charming. Through all of it though Totters was brilliant and I'd recommend it without question.

There is no parking associated with the hostel, but they pointed out a number of close free parking areas that worked out well for us. There are pubs and restaurants aplenty within walking distance. Free breakfast, books and games lining the wall.

Mark was especially helpful giving us hiking tips and general info. Our room was on the top floor, number 6, facing the river - what a great view! Everything was quite clean, nicely furnished and the beds were comfortable. Breakfast the first morning was okay, but as we were finishing, I heard another guest raving about the "avocado toast" he had yesterday. Hmm...we weren't advised about this dish. The next morning, I asked, "Do you have avocado toast?" Sweet Emily replied, "Oh yes, I always forget about the specials - let me check." As it turned out, the avocado toast was one of the BEST dishes I had during my two week travels in Wales & the UK (I know you're thinking..."Wales & UK?") Ask a Welshman. In all, our stay was excellent and if Paul McCartney stays at Plas Tan y Graig, then it's good enough for me - see photo in dining room on fireplace mantle. First there was an immediate personal thank you email upon booking asking us to confirm arrival times. Then there was the welcome when we got there - they knew our names - plus immediate email responses when we were updating ETA times. Staying here is like staying at your long lost Aunty's place, you feel you should know them better than you do. There were huge breakfasts made to order plus an array of cereals and fruits to be had washed down with plentiful coffee. On Easter Sunday, we had a cream egg on the tablespoon left for us! Highly recommended and just a few minutes walk to the beach, castle and local shops. Parking too!

The amenities were exceptional - an ensuite bathroom with a shower, a small refrigerator pre-stocked with water bottles and snacks, bathrobes, slippers and more. But even more than all that, Eileen was a wonderful hostess. Her thoughtful suggestions made our trip more enjoyable. She knows innumerable details about towns, gardens, hikes, etc. Although we had a car, she suggested that we consider taking the train to some locations (Conwy and Blaenau Ffestiniog). We did so, and enjoyed the scenery and were more relaxed when we got there. They helped make dinner reservations for us at a couple of local restaurants (which can get quite busy on the weekends). When you stay here I suggest telling Eileen where you're planning to go and get her advice. You'll be glad you did. They have a reading nook on the first floor with guidebooks, pamphlets and other material on Wales, the Welsh language, and everything in the area. Breakfasts were excellent. My better half greatly enjoyed the porridge and I particularly liked their scrambled eggs and smoked salmon. The center of town is a ten minute walk. You'll find a number of restaurants (including the superb Olif for Welsh tapas), train station, and a visitor center for Snowdonia national park.
