Portmeirion - Dining room inside the restaurant.

Last year my eggs royal were served cold and by the time I could get the servers attention it was too late to order something else and his comment "you didn't have to pay for breakfast so what's the issue" This year we went down earlier and again I looked forward to trying eggs Royal. Again they came out barely warm. This time I chased down the manager and got a different breakfast. Last year we had room 2 in the hotel. Loved that it was a corner room so we had water front and village view. This year room 1. Just as lovely but no river view. Also they've done away with the free slippers being embroidered with the logo. Yes they still have slippers but they are unadorned. I know I know sounds petty but they were such a nice touch. We were there for the food and art festival again but not the hotels fault, the wind storm closed it down for Saturday. Sunday it was opened. Another less than stellar interaction was from the "guards" at the entrance. We had to check out Sunday and we were given a lift to the car park and went to enter the fair. We were supposed to get a plastic shopping bag but the guard refused saying the driver got two bags for the man in an orange coat. Hubby was wearing an orange coat but we didn't get bags from driver. They argued that we must have put the bags away and just wanted more. I don't steal and don't like being accused of stealing a silly bag. We checked the car and there were no bags. We managed to get a single bag grudgingly I know I know again petty but it does add up to be annoying.

The Good The Bad and The Ugly…read more The Good This was a bucket list wish trip. We've been wanting to get to see Portmeirion for 30 years and this was the year!!! We booked a room in the hotel and it included breakfast and we decided against having dinner there because as luck would have it the yearly Christmas craft and food festival was going on at the grounds. We enjoyed the fair and in the evening we sat in front of one of the fires. Husband reading and me knitting. Wonderful relaxing visit. The public rooms were old world gracious and cozy. The bar had a nice selection of drinks to enjoy. Our room was beautiful and we had two windows. One over the river and one up to the village. It was cold and rainy during our visit but believe it or not we came for this weather, being from Florida we kind of miss the cold. The Bad First morning breakfast was a full Welsh breakfast and was good but the second day, the last day and the one we will remember was horrible. I got the salmon eggs Benedict and husband an omelette. His breakfast came out steaming, mine - I almost had to chip off the ice. Okay there wasn't ice on my eggs but there was not a degree of warmth over room temperature and the room was cold. Couldn't catch the eye of a server. They were too busy cleaning up getting the room set for lunch. I had one bite of my eggs and pushed them aside. I went to fix my cup of tea and there was only two sugar cubes in the sugar bowl. What???? Thank goodness the table next to us was empty so we just swapped out. No salt and pepper on the table either. You would think the servers would notice that the food hasn't been eaten and ask about it. The Ugly Finally got the attention of our server. I told him my eggs were cold and inedible and if he had checked on us it could have been corrected during breakfast hours. (Breakfast was over by the way). He then got snippy and said there is no check because breakfast is included in the room. What the heck??? Just wish our last memory was better. Would i return?. That's a good question. The facility is beautiful, the room was great. Walking around the village was interesting but leaving hungry wasn't how I wanted to end our trip. Honestly if breakfast service is any indication of meals there I'm glad we didn't spring for dinner.

This hotel is breathtaking and was the culminating memory of our time in Snowdonia National Park…read more We were visitors from New York and couldn't have asked for a more cozy dining experience in their outdoor patio, with scones and tea that I still dream about. The hotel is nestled on a gorgeous lake that offers breathtaking views of Snowdonia's mountains and green valleys. Even in the end of Fall when we visited, the soothing fog enveloped the lake which made for an enchanting experience. The manager Malcolm, himself, swims in the lake in most seasons. Malcolm and his entire staff always went out of their way to accommodate our group. This is a must-visit spot owned by wonderful and caring people. I couldn't give this hotel a higher review and I truly look forward to our next visit.

The pictures you see in the booking sites are a good likeness of what is there. It is secluded and has great views over the lake (which they also own). Not all rooms have views of the lake. Our room was small, but fresh and comfortable with an excellent ensuite. There are plans to restock the lake for fly fishing. Would certainly go there again. We had dinner three times and every meal was excellent. The only downside is wifi performance - which is dire, but you might consider that an advantage!

The Tyn-y-Groes Hotel is an old coaching Inn on the A470 North of Dolgellau…read more The building is old and has character, but unfortunately that is the end of it's charms. It does have free WiFi (mainly in the bar) which is useful. The double room was a decent size and adequate. The shower was good once you have waited for several minutes for the water to come through hot. Funnily enough the two main meals had a problem with heat too: one was just about warm enough whilst the other was extremely hot presumably due to inconsistent use of the microwave. The food was edible, but of varying quality. We were on a deal that included a free bottle of wine. When we tried to pick a bottle of wine we were told it was just the house wine, so we went with the house red which ended up being Silver Bay Point, an English wine made from Grape Concentrate. It tasted 'thin' with little flavour so I studied the label, at 8% it is the weakest wine I can remember seeing. The price of this wine in the hotel was £13.95, Tesco sell it by the case for £2.85 a bottle, so now I understand why it isn't very nice, and with a 489% mark-up I know I'm being ripped off. The breakfast seemed to consist of the cheapest available ingredients, deep-fried wherever possible and served with a pullet egg. The second day I just had bacon and poached eggs, one egg was hard boiled and the other was quite firm, but I suspect it is difficult to get the timing right with such small eggs. The main problem is that the service is variable at best because the staff seem slow and disinterested. It is the ONLY hotel I've stayed at in over 30 years that doesn't make up your room unless you put the little sign on the outside of your hotel room to say please make up room: no sign, no room maintenance. When the note said if you want your room servicing put the sign on the door I wrongly presumed this was in addition to the normal daily service, it wasn't. The hotel is some distance from Dolgellau or anywhere else for that matter, but the busy A road means that the rooms can be noisy. There is parking off on the side of the road, but you do need to be careful because the A470 is a fast road. My advice is avoid, poor value for money.
