First, the house itself is just beautiful: Victorian style, with a pool and what looks like a full bar in the "shed" in the backyard. The house is owned by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright David Lindsay-Abaire and his wife [1]. Skeletons emerge from the ground among gravestones in the bushes by the front lawn. The wrap-around porch is chock-full of real-size animatronic figures such as haunted clowns, ghosts, zombie children, a giant werewolf and 3 homicidal piggies. A dozen skeletons with beaming red eyes climb the exterior of the house; giant spiders take over the fence. A butcher with a massive mallet and a circular saw for hands, and a possessed dog that leaps out of a doghouse, alongside projections of ghosts on the windows. Only thing, I feel bad for their front lawn that gets literally butchered by all the people walking on it. Apart from that, this house is awesome! ------------------------ [1] You can read more about it here: https://gothamist.com/arts-entertainment/brooklyn-halloween-house-ditmas-park-2021-photos And here https://nypost.com/article/best-scary-halloween-decorations-nyc/?utm_content=brooklyn-halloween-house-ditmas-park&utm_source=secretnyc&utm_medium=post&utm_term=cta1

From the moment you turn the corner, you can tell something special is happening. Up close, it's like stepping into a full-on haunted attraction: fog rolling across the yard, glowing jack-o'-lanterns, and animatronic creatures. There's Chucky, Gremlins, towering skeletons--you name it--and every detail feels thoughtfully designed. What makes it even better is knowing this isn't a commercial setup. Roy Jensen and his family have been decorating this home since the late '80s, and he still builds and installs everything himself. His daughters help plan and run the social media[1], and you can truly feel the love and dedication behind it all. They decorate for every holiday, not just Halloween and Christmas. The vibe was amazing--families with kids in costumes, neighbors chatting, everyone smiling and taking photos. It's that classic Brooklyn community energy you don't see enough of anymore. I wouldn't necessarily travel far to come here, but if you love the Dyker Heights lights but want something a little more personal, this is your spot. You still get 50,000+ lights and the same over-the-top magic, in a more intimate setting. 4 stars instead of 5 only because the Ditmas Park Halloween House is objectively on another level[2]. ------------------------------ [1] @bayridgeholidayhouse on Instagram. "Screw you, New York City!"…read more Back in the early 1900's, hundreds of buildings were condemned and demolished by the city to widen the streets and build the subway line. One of those homes was that of David Hess, who wanted to keep his five story apartment building. As they say, you can't fight City Hall. In the end, the city was victorious and he was forced to give up the property. By 1914, the tiny concrete triangle was all that remained of Hess' property as a result of a surveying error. As if his loss wasn't bad enough, the city asked him to donate the tiny portion of concrete to use as part of the public sidewalk. Out of spite, Hess refused the offer. On July 27, 1922, he had the triangle covered with mosaic tiles, displaying the statement, "Property of the Hess Estate Which Has Never Been Dedicated For Public Purposes." The Hess' Triangle sits on the ground outside of a cigar shop on the corner of Christopher and 7th Avenue. It would be easy to miss - three bagels laid flat would cover it entirely. It is quite literally the smallest piece of private property in the city. Village Cigars bought the triangle in 1938 for $1,000. [Round number review 15700 overall - 292 in New York - 1204 of 2021.]

It represents a big middle finger to governments. The triangle reads "Property of the Hess Estate which has never been dedicated for public purposes." This came about through a dispute with the City, when they wanted to buy his property to widen the avenue and install the subway below. David Hess didn't want to sell, but the City ended up taking the property through eminent domain. A mistake during the surveying of the property accidentally overlooked this tiny triangle of land. The City had the nerve to ask Hess to donate the land; the Hess family chose to install this defiant plaque instead way back in 1922. It no longer belongs to the Hess Estate, which sold it to Village Cigars in 1938. Fun little spot.

Well... maybe lower commuter fees, lol. We chose this area as our top pick for several reasons: unbeatable access to convenient railroad lines, a strong safety rating, reasonable property taxes (yes, we checked!), and the hope of finding a beautiful home under a million. I was done with city life and the five boroughs -- especially Queens. I wanted to be able to drive to a store, park in an actual parking lot, and not waste time circling around for a street spot, stressing about someone dinging my car. No more of that nonsense. And don't get me started on city permits. So many rules, so many regulations, and it takes forever. People are nice but nice doesn't get me the permit today, takes months :((
