I'll admit the cavernous feel of the showroom felt odd and a bit uninviting. One employee was eating her lunch on the counter which most businesses know is not good practice. I have worked in IT related business for many years. A long time ago I had to use a data recovery…read moreservice, but my job was mostly to pull and ship the drive, then chide someone for failing to back up. I did not see the cost of this service, but I gathered it was a lot. My experience led some friends to to contact me when they had a notebook disk fail with some important, un-backed up pictures on it. I tried all my tricks to no avail. I put the disk into an external bay and could hear the tell-tale tick of a mechanical problem, and was led to Google data recovery. I came to SecureDataRecovery.com based only on reviews. I contacted them with all the specs on the drive, and my troubleshooting steps, but they were unable to estimate the cost without examining the device. I did see the clause that if I sent it in, there was a charge of about $20 to get it back, even if I took no other services, but forged ahead. SecureData sent a shipping label, and I packed it up with a box and some wrap we had around, then dropped at FedEx without an issue. The got it a day or two later, and let me know. It took another day or two to get an estimate. It was much higher than expected (north of $1600), so I asked to get the drive sent back. Upon this request I was informed there was lower priority option that could cost less if I wanted to peruse that. I agreed to get that estimate, and this was just under $700, which the owners found a little steep, but accepted. I needed to provide them a new drive to return the data. I found that it would be about $12 to FedEx a drive there, but there was a sale on Sandisk thumbdrives on Amazon. I got a 128G for about $10, checked that it was a gift, put my name and order number on the gift receipt, and had it shipped straight to them. They got it no worries, and a couple of days later the data arrived. My friends reviewed their data, and the irreplaceable pictures were all there, and in the end everyone was happy.
