Serotonin Eatery - Nutrition Bomb and Mango Madness

I was already loaded on serotonin (result of two back to back fitness classes) before arriving here…read moreon a cool Sunday afternoon (around 12pm). There is ample street parking and a park with a playground within minutes away.  My friend had arrived a few minutes earlier and put down our names on the waiting list. She was told it would be a 25 minutes wait. So, in the mean time, we got coffees. She got herself a soy flat white, while I was refused a skinny cacao mocha as they do not serve skim milk. When my friend asked why, they said it was because skim milk is full cream milk with the fat removed and added sugar. Though I beg to differ, I had to suffice with the full cream extra hot cacao mocha. Their homemade cacao is bitter and hence my drink was quite bitter but I could barely taste the coffee as the cacao was so overpowering. Perhaps, I should have ordered a double shot cacao mocha.  We got seating within the 25 minutes and were offered seats in the corner. While I had a comfy couch to sit on, my friend appeared to be sitting on what looked like a bed. She had the waitress climbing up behind her to serve drinks and food. As this looked quite awkward, we were then moved to shared seating on a long table near the kitchen. Here I noticed that the cafe has outdoor seating which I would have much preferred as well as swings that you can sit on. The swings look pretty cool but I prefer stable seating.  My friend was hangry and ordered the nutrition bomb which is 23 bucks and has eggs, alfalfa sprouts, pumpkin/sweet potato and other goodness. I found the menu slightly disappointing as I love eggs and most of the dishes suggested that you add on an egg ($5 for an egg - umm I buy a dozen for around $3), but then I guess you go to other cafes for eggs or eat them at home.  I got the smiling avocado - a dish with two slices of bread (their sprouted bread is sensational), lots of cherry tomatoes, crumbed feta, smashed pea and mint puree, smashed avocado beetroot relish, and chopped chilli. The portion sizes are huge so I do not recommend you order any of their large sides to share unless you are very very hungry. I thoroughly enjoyed my meal and enjoyed the slight sweet flavour that was perhaps due to the beetroot relish. I could have done with more chilli but feared asking for added chilli as that is an extra 2 bucks. Service is quick and staff friendly. They have a minimum 20 eftpos limit (seriously!) but then it's easy to exceed the $20 limit where almost everything is an add-on (eggs, avocado, chilli, sweet potato, pumpkin, and the list goes on).  I believe their menu is best catered for people who like to mix and match items to produce their own brunch meals. Whereas for me, I prefer pre-designed brunch items that are wholesome and affordable.

I found it really hard to like this place. I found it hard to pay a minimum of $22 for something…read morethat I already eat daily. I found Serotonin to be wanky, overpriced and weirdly cult like. With dishes like deconstructed sushi and over used adjectives on the menu that want to make you (and I did) go 'WTF'? They are clearly aiming at the current happy, healthy and wholesome vibe going around but the menu has no staying power. Especially with the prices they ask of you. $10 for a coconut with a shot of espresso. Golden latte - I make this all the time at home and mine tastes better. Won't be back.

Downstairs you can currently get everything from coffee and pastries to ice cream sandwiches or waffles and cereal. Upstairs is home to Storm in a Teacup and 'The Val' (Valhalla Social Cinema). The Val is a small theatre showing cult classic and independent films on Friday and Saturdays. To top it off? They also host food trucks in the evening for dinner. This makes it a fun space to check out at any time of day really! Today I went in for a hot cross bun (it's never too early!) and an iced filter coffee - next time I want to check out a flick, eat dinner and devour an ice cream sandwich. Sticking around until September - I hope to be a regular between now and then!

Part of me wishes it would just stay the way it is now rather than become another pub. On the current rotation of pop-ups there is Willis & Co coffee and pastries, ice cream sandwiches (OMG so good), healthy food from Fit Inn and the cinema upstairs. Previous tenants included Rustica, Pressed Juices and Storm in a Teacup. I am keen to see who else might pop up. Yes, pun intended. They also have food trucks that visit and park out the back on various occasions. Either way, get yourself down there to try those ice cream sandwiches, even in the cold weather - you won't be disappointed!

We visited on one of their quieter days, and although it was almost empty when we arrived, about half the tables quickly filled up with patrons visiting for a mix of coffees and pastries (Also made by Wide Open Road), or breakfast. It's a simple, clean fit out and works well for laid back brunches or a calm environment for a business meeting. There are a range of tables, including two well suited for larger groups. The menu comes in roughly two parts- there's your more traditional breakfast options - free range eggs, avocado, pikelets, porridge, fritters etc. and then there's Bowls or Broths, which are definitely going to become Terror Twilight's trademark. There's a lot to love about them - they're healthy, full of flavour, fresh and totally on trend. Choosing them comes in 4 parts. Firstly, decided if you want a bowl or a broth, then choose base, add your sides, and a protein. I opted for haloumi, sweet potato, and tumeric + cumin tossed cauliflower in my bowl, with a base of broccoli and winter greens and chicken for my protein. My other half went for a chicken broth, with buckwheat noodles, a soft boiled egg and fresh bokchoy, enoki mushrooms, beanshoots and thai basil, adding salmon for his protein. I want to say the best thing about them is that they are so healthy, but it's not. It's either that they are so delicious, or that you get to build your own dish, so they are really versatile, or that they cater really well for dietary requirements - so you can please everyone! We also got to try the pikelets, which came with grilled plums, cherry and cardamom syrup, coconut yoghurt and hazelnut brittle. These were also vegan and were amazing, they were light and airy and really tasty. They were so easy to eat, I could have devoured about 100 of them. I enjoyed the syrup and the brittle, but I think a smaller fruit like blueberries or strawberries would have completed the delicate pancakes better. A quick final word on the coffee. My other half tried the batch which is a strong, but enjoyable brew - will really wake you up. You can customise this by adding extra shots too. We liked the healthy conscious, clean eats undertone of Terror Twilight. It's not in your face about it, but most of the menu is healthy, fresh food. It tastes great and really sets you up well for the day. It's a got a good all day, versatile menu, with plenty of options to keep you coming back.
