There's nothing particularly fun or special about this place. It's not clean. The bar isn't big nor does it offer a wide selection or specialize in beer, wine or liquor. The bartenders aren't friendly or fast. It doesn't have cool or interesting "boondocks" themed decor. It's not big enough to dance or move around without imposing on others. The music is muddled and the acoustics of the building are terrible. The only thing this place has going for it is a location that keeps the indie kids coming. The regulars here seem particularly rude and territorial to me, so since the regulars like the place so much, I'll let them keep it and go to one of the many other Montrose area bars and hangouts. read more

one of the coolest dive bars i've been to in a while. it's true to the people and the music. i like it because it's not about see and be seen. it's about just plain good music where you can wear what you want and do what you want. not to mention the drinks are sickly priced so you can get your fill no problem. you gotta hit up the place on every last saturday of the month if you like hip-hop, old school, breaks, reggae, latin, underground because they play the good stuff. i got hype because it's what i remembered how clubbing used to be like and it kinda died somewhere. not to mention if you want cheap beer, they got it. haha read more

I've maybe been there 4 or 5 times tops- months apart each time.(weeknights and weekends) I've never had an awesome experience there. Every time I go, I get carded by a door person younger than myself. It's almost always too crowded for comfort. The TINY deck/patio is always overstuffed with smokers who play the "let's stare and judge the people walking in" game. I've seen much worse bathrooms, so I'm not going to fault them there... And I agree with what other people are saying about fights- ALWAYS. I've almost gotten into a couple myself there. Just a dark, negative vibe overall. There are other places to get cheap(er) beer. read more

knocking two stars off cause the bartenders act like they're too cool for school and I agree with Brittany E. when she said they like to pretend like they have never seen you before. Bad service is bad service. read more

Accidentally stumbled in to Boondocks trying to find Stone's Throws. It's definitely a true dive bar. Very casual, eclectic crowd, cheap drinks. The bartender was friendly and poured generously. I'm not sure if I'd visit again considering it's proximity to Stone's Throw, but it's a good place for those who want to go out but not spend too much money. read more

Super cheap drinks with strong pours. Great music on most weekend nights (haven't gone on a weekday night), great for dancing. Fun photobooth if you feel like snapping some party shots. And a great patio if you want to chill outside and talk. After 2am, grab some food at Koagie Hots or Rice Box. Perfect night out! read more

If you are the regular fool who likes hype music, you might not get the vibe of this place, but for the person in town wondering where is there a good house music trippy dance till your ego vanishes kind of place, then Boondocks it is. nice crowd, fairly priced drinks, and the ambiance is just delightful. If you've been around the house scene in other cities or parts of the world, you'll catch the drift right away, specially since Houston is lacking places like this. read more

I came here two nights in a row when I was in town and I have to say it was amazing. Music is loud, cheap drinks and the owner is a stud! Get me a PBR! read more

the greatest bar in montrose. I try to make out with anyone who works there, especially dave. I vow to be the last one out every night.

Wow I'm surprised that this place isn't rated higher! I aspire to change that, and maybe I have a different opinion being from Austin because this is a typical Austin dive-bar near montrose (go fig!). First off, it's CASUAL! dress to impress my ass htown! yes it's hipster, it's dark, there's a juke box with david's bowie ziggy stardust in queue, and the dj is blaring 80s music. plus i ordered 2 beers and 3 vodka tonics for $20. What the? where are we? there's also an upstairs with a small bar and a dance floor that feels like a time warp. it was a spankin fun time with friends, and i'd go back every time im in houston! read more

Boondocks is always a go to spot for me on Saturdays. the upstairs will usually have a DJ and it gets pretty crazy. there is a patio for all the smokers and on Sundays they have free food for all the folks who are recovering from hangovers. this place is a magnet for funny stories of mine. over all this place is great. a staple on the westheimer strip. read more

Booncocks - it's all in the name. I really don't like this bar, and can't fathom why I have friends that go there frequently. It takes a while to get a drink, they're not cheaper than any other bar, and the place is wall to wall with bro's, hipsters, and other people who think they're better than everyone else. The "dance floor" upstairs is not really a dance floor, it's just a spot with no tables. The music is always boring as hell, generic hip hop or whatever. Ugh. Also, the stairs can be quite steep and people do fall down them from time to time. So you go outside to escape the inside, where there is a lot of seating, but a lot of seating has already been taken. I don't smoke cigarettes and the music is too loud outside to hear anyone across the table from you, so going outside has no purpose for me. So in a nutshell, inside and out this place is no bueno. There's too many better places where I can get a drink and not be in a place thats got a guy to girl ratio of like 10 to 1. Seriously. You are never going to meet a girl here. So... whats the point? Just head to poison girl, rudyards, numbers, dirt bar, avant garden, or.. well, anywhere else. You'll have more fun, better music, service, people, and a better night. read more

One of the ONLY places in Houston without Douchebags. Cheap 1.50 PBR, cheap whisky, Stella on tap, hot hipster girls, diverse crowd, indie/electro-inclined DJs. This bar is the closest thing to Austin/ Brooklyn in Houston and I'm glad I found it a few years ago. Some nights there are a few more poseurs and mainstream/ frat boy-esque people, but the crowd is mostly interesting people and regulars. They even bring in some of Austin/ Dallas' best DJs like Car Stereo (wars), Prince Klassen, King Louie, Sober, Nature, etc.. If you wanna drunkenly dance like your life depends on it to good music, make some great "connections", and get wasted in an economical way, go here. Or DON'T. I wouldnt want my favorite place populated by a bunch of losers. Come if you can hang.. read more

If you want to channel your inner youth and "relive college nights" then come to Boondocks. There's no cover, and the DJ plays some great throwbacks and current hits perfectly mixed for some fun dancing. The dance floor upstairs is always packed and the bartender is relatively quick with preparing drinks. Come for a fun "dance night" with the girls or a big group of friends. read more

Love it.... everyone is super friendly and drinks are cheap. It gets packed on the weekend, but people that tend to judge people with tattoos and piercings may not find this bar their cup of tea. Dave the bartender ( bald head and huge goatee) is probably one of the coolest and best bartenders in Montrose. The drinks are strong, the music is good, and their is bbq on Sundays.... you really can not beat that. Oh yeah did I mention they have $1 wells for Happy Hour everyday????!?!?! read more

I love the classic hiphop/90's jams the DJ was spinning at this place, I had forgotten of much I loved to dance my a$$ off. The bartender serves the drinks quickly even with a large crowd. Down side, this place has the filthiest floors ever, my white sandals are ruined. No cover charge which is really nice. I might have to go back another time. read more

twas fun, not much else to add. if you didn't like this place then i think you were too self conscious for your own good or you thought you were going to have a chill laid back night. it's crazy, its loud, its whatever - so anything and everything should fit in. . . . and all this hipster bashing, jesus christo! i think if you know what a hipster is, you might have a little hipster in you, just waitin to crawl out, you know, maybe a tendency or two - i mean let's be honest, you didn't hear that boondocks was young conservatives of tx headquarters and decide to go there - and when you were walking up to boondocks and saw the crowd on the patio, you still went in - so . . . cmon people now, smile on your brother, everybody get together and try to love one another right now read more

This is usually the bar I end up at when Ive already had a few drinks, my sober mind never chooses to come here but I end up here every once in a blue moon on a whim. It seems like the bartenders automatically hate you when you walk in and its kind of hilarious (dont worry, its not personal I think they hate everyone). Ive been here for karaoke and some people are actually very tslented/entertaining, plus once there was a fist fight that happened mere inches away from where I was sitting and that was very exciting. Decor is dim with almost a subterranean vibe --it feels like you drinking underground in a bunker. read more

Finally going to write my review of this joint. I go here a lot but its mostly because of the music. Being really into indie, it's hard to find a place in Houston that will play this kind of music, in addition, an atmosphere where people are dancing. For a while, it was being over run by your midtown dbag crowd but it's gone back to a more hipster crowd. It is very important you check out their myspace to see who is dj'ing that night though. It determines the music, the crowd, the atmosphere, the fun, everything basically. Some more important info is to not leave items viewable in the surrounding parking area cause 2 of my friends have had break ins. Only other important info is that drinks are on the cheaper side and you can never go wrong with a $1.50 PBR. So cheap drinks, laid back atmosphere, good music, and a dance floor to tear up makes me a frequent customer. read more

Different strokes for different folks. I heard this place was packed on weekends but I found a bigger crowd during special events during the week. It's a mixed bag and a little research to what's going on will go a long way. read more

Do you want to dance? See a fight? Check out the finest in hipster facial hair? Boondocks is the place to be for all of the above. Don't be afraid, the djs are usually totally worth it (come on, they had car stereo wars for crissake), just know to stay away from the porch around last-call because I swear there's almost always a riot or some kinda drama. read more

Bar hopping on a Wednesday and the last stop was here. Cheap drinks! Good music. Great crowd. No one there is judgmental.

$1.50 PBR's an awesome jukebox, enough said. Just don't go on weekends when they have crappy DJ's.

This was one of the stops on the Montrose Halloween Pub Crawl! I had a great time, the bar tenders were quick even with the huge crowd and the DJ was really really good! I will definitely be back on a regular night. read more

This is a good place for bird-watching. By "bird", I mean hipster with various styles of mustache, scarves, and message T plumage.

I loved it! Went with some friends on thanksgiving weekend it was packed. The music was great everyone was dancing and the energy was great. Could have been the holiday weekend but the crowd was super friendly and wild. I heard they have this line up of djs playing Friday every four weeks. I will definitely hit this spot again the drinks were good and I like the prices. read more

Through the years I've had a blast at Boondocks. Countless Halloweens I've ventured upstairs to shake my ass and make out with Shredder or Fred Flinestone. The music is a breath of fresh air in comparison to other places one might call "da club". What's NOT a breath of fresh air is the dank, sewer smell that hits you EVERYTIME you walk in. The first time I noticed it I assumed it was just a one time thing but...no. It was so bad last time my friend and I walked in and walked right back out. Seriously Boondocks, help me out here. read more

We came here for karaoke on Sunday but there was a metal band instead. Apparently we were in the wrong bar, but if that's so then signage may be an issue. Either way, clientele was a mix of punks, rockers, and hipsters. The prices were good and I understand they have a good happy hour. The space is beautiful and seems like it should be a nice cocktail bar/speakeasy. Instead, it's sometimes violent and loud. Oh well... read more

I guess this is the definition of a Dive Bar. Old, dirty, sticky, dark, cheap, et al. Punk rock to emo crowd, you know, the guys and girls with black t shirts, dark jeans and huge holes in your ear piercings. Fun crowd but it's just so dirty and rundown. Not my style. read more

This place was pretty good. Not too crowded for a Saturday night the DJ was pretty good. The crowd is interesting of older people and teenagers. The reason they got 3 stars is we waited 25 min for a drink at the bar while other people were moving through pretty quick and the bar tenders were not the most friendly. I don't think the floor has ever been cleaned and the bathroom is total dive bar. But nice atmosphere read more

my favorite place for a drink! mostly everyone there is very kind, definitely a place that makes you feel at home. do yourself a favor and check this place out! read more

If you want to have a lot of alcohol in your blood and dance through the night, then this is the place you are looking for. The cocktails on the first floor are horrible. We ordered Long Island Iced Teas and neither did they taste good, nor did they have the proper color that they should have. I guess they messed up the proportions, but that is not what you expect from a bartender. On the second floor, the bartender was better and he made us a couple of excellent Kamikazes. It was a mixed experience but I would give them 4 stars considering the place for dancing on the second floor. read more

This place is pretty awesome. Bartenders are quick, friendly, and attentive. Drinks are tastyyyyyyyy and cheap. I loved the music, but the kids there were too cool to dance. The inside is great, but the patio is where it's at. There weren't any empty tables, so we pulled up chairs and met some strangers. Not the annoying too cool kinda, but the kind that's just cool enough to spend an hour or two chatting with. read more

Me and my friends talk a lot about this bar's downfalls, but it's always the place we end up when we're out in Montrose. I kind of love that about it. The drinks are cheap, with dollar wells til 8pm daily. After about 10-11pm it gets crowded, but the music is great on hip hop night and the dancing is fun. read more

Had to put in a review here after reading Farrah's. Love you girl, but not this place!! So when they first opened, like literally a few days before opening, I went in and met (re-met actually but he didn't remember me) Shawn to review his new haunt for a local mag all about the bar scene in H-town. He was slightly less than a jerk to me then than at any time since then..... Pretty much ALL of my DJ friends have played there at one point, so it stands to reason I may actually like this place, but let's face it, the owners always been a DB to me, so I don't. I've officially been kicked out of this bar permanently 3 times, and for what, drunken behaviour? Nah. For starting fights? Nope. For what then, well honestly I can't even recall the first 2 times, I guess I just thought it was a joke; I always got in the next time I showed up; I bet Shawn can't even remember why he's kicked me out. But the last time, aaaaah the last time, I was participating in an activity with (won't name name's of who I was with, but 2 of them were djing that night) several people and Shawn came up to me specifically and kicked me out..... permanently....... again. * what we were doing was admittedly considered illegal (which should just be a-ok in this place considering all the 18y/o's drinking & doing lines in there, so if you're into coke and statutory rape it's hip) buuuuuuut out of my 5 friends standing there all engaged, I'm the only one he singled out.... I think he has a crush on me ;) ;) hahaha He told me I'm the ONLY female he's ever perma-banned (which is quite untrue, I know several others). I'm cool with it tho, don't like underaged drunken cokie mattresses myself, maybe that's just Shawn. Can I give this place negative stars??? read more

I love BD!!! Everytime i come, i have a good time! Why?!! Cz d music is awesome! Variety of it too! Drinks r good and the place is just cool (Big red lamp hanging,i just wanna steal it! lol!) This place is okay I'm upset the bar tender charged me twice on my tab I still haven't got my money back hopefully I do soon. Then they questioned me on how fast I was drinking my liquor, I mean like really dude? I know how much I can handle.. Then he made me give him my ID when my tab was over 50 so idk I wasn't too happy here then the dancefloor I couldn't even move. so eh wasn't amazing read more
