Uhh. I wish Boondocks was as cool as it is to say the actual word, 'Boondocks.' I've been here a handful of times. It's not a bad place, it's just not a place I'd frequent. Parking is always across Westheimer (look both ways, people!) in residential areas. Be very sure to look for No Parking signs or you WILL get towed. The people at the door are always cool. Bartenders, I didn't really interact with during my last visit. Cheap beer is a plus. They have tables indoors, but nobody sits at them. Everyone stands around as if the tables are in the way. Outside? People are practically preying for the next open table with at least 1 chair. Warning: If you are not a smoker, avoid the patio. There is literally a cloud of smoke that just hangs over the patio. During the summer time (Late March to Early October) it's super humid out. You might say, "Let's go inside, it's so humid out here." You'll go inside, and sweat even more. I swear they keep the air at 82, then you add all the sweaty dancers and mix of B.O. and beer sweat and you're just dying in there. If you REALLY want to dance, there is a DJ upstairs with a dancefloor. Do NOT, I repeat, DO NOT get separated from a friend. Walking through that is a nightmare. Just text them and hope they meet you at the front door. At least Koagie Hots is usually outside and their kimchi fries are soooo choice! read more

I cannot explain why i like this place. It is kinda gross, and dirty. If you don't like pretentious hipster types, you will not appreciate the crowd, but the hipsters are hilarious to me. I enjoy their antics and their handlebar mustaches. The real fun here is the dance floor. they play a ridiculous mix of electro-hip hop and 90's radio staples. So nostalgic, so fun to dance to! Doesn't really pick up til around midnight though. Bartenders are also pretentious, which is laughable for a place that sells 3 dollar drinks that taste like it, but once they start to recognize you, they lighten up a bit. :) read more

Boondocks is a acquired tasted partially based upon what your into and what night you so happen to be there. If you are like me and it matters not to you, I would only suggest taking a few friends when you venture there. I love some of the DJ's that spin there and tend to go when that is the case. But it does get crowded and hot, which makes trying to get a drink a chore. On more than one occasion that I have been there a fight has broken out for whatever drunken reason which makes the place a bit dangerous, but if you maintain your cool and mind your P's and Q's a good time should be had by all. read more

Well, I was invited here by a friend who is a few years younger than I am with her friends who are also younger. I like to think I can still hang. Actually, I know I can, but I do need a few more accommodations (read: no Taaka/Popov, please) than I did back in the day. To that end, I don't want to be snarled at when I ask for something other than well vodka. (WTH? Is the glass bottle too heavy for ya?) The night I went was 90s night. The DJ instructed over the microphone for bar patrons not to request Rihanna or Justin Beiber with a few expletives thrown in for good measure. Look, I get it. This is a hipster bar. We arrived pretty early on a Saturday (Friday?) night and things were relatively enjoyable until the bar was suddenly PACKED and it was HOT, not to mention smelly. No room to dance, move, breathe, live. I ended up being accosted by a sweaty man trying to dry hump on the dance floor (well, it wasn't really so dry since he was so sweaty). Yuck. It was so crowded that I couldn't turn to figure out that my friends were merely inches away. They were blocked by everyone drunkenly making out everywhere and I ended up doing a full lap around the bar to discover they were exactly where we'd been the whole time. In my mind, the only thing this place has going for it is its proximity to Koagie Hots on most nights. Also, I've met some fun people outside of Boondocks while waiting for my kimchi fries, so I guess there might be nice people who frequent this establishment. I came here on a Friday night and it was really ghetto, which isn't necessarily bad, but when I go to a ghetto place I'd like to know in advance to dress the part haha. SO anyways...there wasnt too many people there but it took SOOO long to get drinks. There was a lot of sloppy makeout sessions everywhere you looked even though it wasn't crowded enough, nor the music loud enough to warrant the amount of raunch that was floating around the place. If you're looking for a good indicator of the REAL Houston, this is the place to go. Boondocks is full of no-bull, true-heart people. Their patrons are a pretty accurate bisection of the Houstonians that don't do "the Midtown thing" every night. The music is great, whether it's a live DJ, a live band, or a great selection from their jukebox, your ears will never get tired of this place. The reason I drop Boondocks down to 3 stars is the staff. They're always "too busy" to slow down and say "hey" like other bartenders in town. Every time you order, they give you the feeling like you're bothering them, even if it's just to pop the tab on a PBR. If hospitality is what you look for in a bar, pass this one up. read more

I really enjoy boondocks. Especially before 10/11PM. It's a chill place to grab a drink until then. After that... Well, I hope you drank enough. The bar gets packed, and it's wall to wall. That said, the music upstairs is bangin' and it's one of my favorite places to get my groove on in Montrose. The drinks are made strong. Bathroom can get a little... Dicey. Not the biggest bathroom considering how many people they must be cramming into the place. Go. Give it a try. I'm not sure where to start. The first time I came here was a Friday night. My friends and I were at Poison Girl, it was super packed so we decided to walk to Boondocks and check it out. After all, I've heard mixed reviews. We walk into this hipsteresque type place with loud music. We go upstairs to find someone spinning. As it got later in the night (we got there earlier) the music was awesome and the dance floor was packed with people. That was the best dance night i've had in Houston since....i can't even remember. The last time I went which was on a Saturday and my birthday, sadly, wasn't as fun :( The music was just good... it was hmm... i can't really remember exactly but it just wasn't as fun to dance to. Oh Boons. You saved me from so many boring nights. I have been coming here since day one. I lived right behind this place for a good half year. They have a great jukebox. The only way to hear it is on non-event nights and before 10 on weekdays. The drinks are cheap. I'm talking $1.75 PBR to $5 Jameson. I remember when this place had a two-foot wide smoking area out front, and everyone used to pack into it to get their lung cancer on. Ha! - foolish smokers. Now, they have a huge smoking patio to accommodate many smokers. It still gets packed on occasion, but nothing like before. And for some strange reason, there always seems to be water leaking from the overhang, even when it hasn't rained in days! The only downside to the new patio is that they used up about half of their parking spaces to do so. I do enjoy paying $1.50 for PBR. It's the best damn cheap beer in my opinion. But what do I know? My favorite kind of any other beer is Lone Star (I'm kidding, I really like Full Moon - not Blue Moon, but it's so hard to find at a bar other than Rudz or Anvil). So I drink lots of Lone Star. Service is alright, unless you go when there's a crap load of people, then it's insane. Usually two bartenders, but sometimes three. I'm fond of the curly haired one. She's kinda cute... The crowd changes throughout the week, depending on what kind of dj they have upstairs. I avoid the place on Little Joe Washington night. Don't mind the performer, just his audience (eerie bunch). This place gets four stars on the nights of reverberation. The best music is played on these nights. When there's no dj, the jukebox is decent. Every once in a while they'll have a band playing upstairs and there's never a cover. That's pretty cool. And if you're lucky, you might even see Goldenaxe perform! They have a pretty good happy hour too after work during the week, and on Sunday afternoons. In conclusion, I rate this bar A-OK. It has the best cheap beer around, good music, interesting crowds, a cute bartender, and sometimes Goldenaxe. What more can you ask for?!?!?!?!!? read more

Dive bar indeed! With an upstairs dancefloor, woot! Over the course of last Friday night I ordered three well drinks, each priced at $4 a piece. It was awesome. The drinks were strong enough, but the bartender did not seem to know what Tom Collins was, I think. I ordered a gin and tonic and then a Tom Collins. Um, the first and second drink tasted exactly the same. My friends and I came here for 50's night, and the music was mostly pretty danceable, but it felt like there really wasn't much of a crowd (even at 11pm or so). Hm. I think a few months ago I would have awarded this place four stars, but honestly my experience was not all that remarkable, and Houston has better dive bars to offer with a more interesting crowd. Also, this place is real close to where I got towed last year, so I'm probably a bit more prejudiced against this joint than I should be. read more

This place is gross! A few years back, I came twice and danced both times for quite a while. Then, one night, I decided to bring my BF for some late night grind dancing. However, at 11, the dance floor was empty and we were treated to a 12 minute song that had about 5 notes. Tonight, we tried again. More people later at night, about 5 guys lined up around the dance floor and no dancing. One of the guys was so clearly high it was creepy. Boondocks is a great bar for any night of the week. If i can't find something to do, there's always Boondocks! I love how the dance floor is just as big as the outside area. Although most would disagree, I would say the seating is ample. I hate sitting at bars. Going upstairs is the best way to get a drink fast, unless it's super busy like on a Thursday. I have a hard time finding any reasons to rate it above one star, but the only saving grace is that the music being played is unlike most other clubs - oldies, psychedelic, 60s classic rock, flower children type. The crowd is also very, hm, to put it bluntly, motley. I don't think the people here care about how they look or dress, or maybe my taste in clothes is about style and fit and not about what's fashionable and scene-ish. When I was there it was packed. But it was packed with the type of crowd I described. Upstairs were people dancing to very loud music. I should also mention that the interior was very old looking and kind of run down like. The outdoor patio is nothing special. A lot of smokers, weird people, and maybe some other smoking related activity that should not be included in a review. I personally won't come here again, but if this scene is what you're into or if you're into the kind of music that doesn't get today's kids dancing (maybe the baby boomers) then you should check it out. read more

I was exposed to this place when it first opened years ago and I didn't really have too much of an opinion on it. Well I finally came here again and I guess I have enough data to finally churn out a little Yelp review. Holy dive bar. PBR 4 LYFE! ALL HAIL PBR!!! Jk, I hate PBR, but perchance you don't - get it here. I mean overall, this probably isn't completely atrocious but it just feels unsanitary. What do I based this on? Heck if I know, it's just a feeling man. Just go with it. Boondocks seems quite heavy on the scenesters, Apparently most of the patrons crowd around the patio area - presumably to smoke. Thus on this particular weekday, it was rather deserted around the bar area. Service was fairly regular, but sometimes I felt like you really had to stare down the bartenders to catch their attention. Yeah, hi dudes, it's me, chick with the crazy eye, give us our drinks! I've never ventured upstairs, have no reason to as of yet. The restroom is a bit questionable, but that is to be expected. Anyway I much prefer Poison Girl and Cecil's over this place. This preference is mostly likely based on the fact that I'm more of a regular at those other two places so they feel more like "home." I wouldn't be completely opposed to stopping by here again, but I mean, I don't see any reason why I would need or want to. read more

When I go to visit friends in Houston my go-to's are either this place or Etro lounge. These are friends I've had since college before we 'became different people', well I've always been different than them, but we'll leave that story for another time. This is my kind of place. Even though they probably don't have a prayer of picking up a kewt alt-chick, they still like to look and let me tell ya there is plenty to look at! But I prefer dancing to looking and this place is great for that. The musics that the DJ plays are starting to grow on me. It's mostly that miscellaneous electro-noise rife with warbling bass-lines and maybe some synths. Throw in the occasional modernized mash-up of a disco song, and rare recognizeable techno song with lyrics, and that in a nutshell is the music here. My best moment here to date, besides the girl in the sexy black dress, with whom my antics were just too little, too late; was hearing Arnand Van Helden's "You don't know me" which has made me reevaluate whether I should start listening to 'housey'-electo again. Ironically I was just telling someone tonight how I can't recall the last time I used a semicolon. This is easily one of my favorite bars in all of H-Town. Even when it's dead, like it was last night, it's still a great place to chill with friends, and there's always interesting people there. The bartenders are always great fun, too. I've never been able to keep track of every bars themed nights, but I did karaoke here on a Sunday in front of a decent-sized crowd. It was so much fun, and I remember thinking the song selection was very good. I've also been here when the second-story dance floor is packed and everyone is just jumping to the music. That was a much younger crowd, but it was still fun. You really can't beat the energy here. The outdoor patio is also great, lots of room, and there's usually a place to sit, which is more than what you can say for other patios. I think it was that same Sunday night where there was free food on the patio. All in all, this is my favorite place to go with friends. It somehow manages to please everybody. Beer is really cheap, and their mixed drinks are no more expensive than other venues around Montrose. (My white Russians last night were six dollars a piece, which is standard, but they were very good - lots of vodka.) read more

I think the main thing that separates Boondocks from most of the bars in Houston is the quality of the music there. The other night I heard Justice and Crystal Castles. That's some of the more interesting music you're going to be able to hear without taking a trip to either of the more populous coasts. Went here for a comedy show a year ago. Very disappointing - had to deal with racists bartenders who refused to serve me until some other patrons called attention to it, disorganized when it came to setting up the show. The show was pretty disappointing too, overall the whole experience was very exclusionary. Would not recommend, Houston has so much more to offer. read more

To be honest I always have a good time when I come here. Like the title mentions a Dive Bar. Pretty hipster... Decent music. Bartenders are always nice, and the drinks are good. Sometimes there is a cover charge when there may be a DJ playing. If you get there early enough you don't have to pay. Other then that this place is cool. Young crowd looking to have a good time. Oh! I've only been there once and my experience wasn't exactly the best. For one there's no sign so I couldn't find it and I was supposed to be meeting someone there. Additionally it was raining and there was a lot of water inside and no wet floor signs. The thing that bothered me the most is that the bar tender tried to short change us. While sometimes the crowd can be a bit rowdy, and there are a fair share of sloshed patrons, overall I have got to say that I enjoy my time at Boondocks most of the time. I mostly go for their dance party's which I believe are some of the best in Houston (people that love to dance and have a good time). Now I also have gone when it's a slow night, and this is where my lower score comes into play. Stones throw is basically taken over the parking lot but I drive a scooter now so I don't care really. Not too find of the chain of bars n restaurants taking over the strip tho. Now no specials at boons at night but there's still the $1/wells 5-8 everyday and the burger guy on Sunday you only need to tip. Still doubt I'll come here as much as I used to if they'll even let me in again. Had some bad experiences here and had a phone stolen. And a friend had his wallet stolen. Obviously were also at fault but I'm Not too fond of being around people that would rather steal in a small group or small bar. Parking lot is broken up. Good luck walking out wasted. Low Boogie on a Friday Night! Showed up @ 7pm where the dim and grungy feel of the inside made me think it was later, not to mention it felt super empty. I was soon greeted by the Johnny Depp look-alike bartender who was nice, informative and helped me get the party going. 2 Karbach lagers and a couple of $2 Well whiskeys later I found myself really digging the joint. The bathroom was a fun adventure as the 4 walled bathroom was adorned with a pee-receptacle on 3 of the 4 walls. This made for an interesting, albeit awkward scenario when peeing with 2 others. Though quick-witted jokes helped relax them and my own prostate. Ended up outside, staying till about 10pm. It filled up decently and service was never dragging. Boondocks is hard to rate accurately because whether or not you'll enjoy this place depends on what you're looking for. First and foremost, in no uncertain terms, this is a scenester/hipster/rocker bar. Obviously, then, if you can't stand the guy who looks like he's a member of the Bravery, or the girl who looks like she's in the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, then you will hate this place. On the other hand, if you're into that scene, you might really like it. Second, the VAST majority of the people who go here already know each other as "part of the scene." That said, to outsiders it's easy to feel like you don't belong or aren't particularly welcome here. Still, if you're a pretty looking scenester girl, regardless of whether you know anyone, the guys will be on top of you in no time flat (my friend related a story to me where a guy approached her and bluntly said, "So, do you like big dick?"). The bar also lets A LOT of underage girls in (guess the doorman doesnt really check IDs carefully), so, again, if that's your bag . . . As for service, on weekends service is slow if you know the bartender, ridiculously slow if you don't. Still, the prices are cheap and the strength of the drinks is decent. From time to time the place has events like "Soul Night" where the DJs actually play some pretty good music upstairs and people really do start to boogie. So, if you just want a place to dance to some interesting music, it can be a decent choice. The dance floor, though, is TINY and feels vaguely unsafe (i.e., "is this going to collapse?"). Personally, I hate boondocks, mostly because its just way too scene and has a high percentage of immature habitual wasters who have nothing going for themselves except "looking cool." But, I also have a lot of friends who like going there, so I can't hate on it completely, it's just not for me. It seems like the crowd has been thinning out as of late (hard to build a business model where your clientele consists 90% of broke scenesters) so it's questionable whether this place has it for the long-term. read more

---NOTE-- It's been 4 days since I visited Boondocks. I've since checked my bank statement and saw that they added a 60% tip to the bill. I guess they didn't like what I left, and decided to authorize my card for more than what I signed for. ----- I want to preface this by saying, I LOVE a good dive bar. That said, Houston has plenty of good dive bars and this just doesn't make the cut. Like any good dive bar, Boondocks meets you at the door with a particular kind of grit. Unlike other good dives, this place overwhelms the patron with a stench of B.O. and your feet are immediately reminded of how many people have spilled their drinks in the joint. As you walk to the bar, be careful as you are forced to peel your feet with each step from the sticky floor. Once at the bar, feel free to order anything as the prices are dirt cheap. I'd never complain about that, but I will say that the prices are low for a reason. Their liquor is clearly the very lowest of the well, and it's clear their bartenders don't know how to pour. My first drink, a whisky press, was over flowing from the rocks glass and most of it was terrible booze, guess the bartender took the mixer to be more of a suggestion than an actual request. It was garnished by a lemon and a lime, and while that's a nice touch, it was really just annoying to have those in the way of the drink that was spilling out of the glass. I moved on to one more beverage, a bottled beer, because at this point it was the only thing I could trust. Luckily the bartenders can't really mess up the beer, but they did manage to muck up the service. When I went to order this time, the blonde bartender made a point to sneer at me and call me "blondie." Not really sure where that came from, given that she was blonde too, but hey I guess she's trying to help the bar live up to its reputation of being a "good dive" and passive aggressive surliness was what she thought would fit the bill. I left when some sort of fight broke out at 10:30 PM, when I watched one of the guests put another in a chokehold and saw the "security" chuckling in the background. I also need to mention that the bar fight, while obnoxious and a little too early in the evening, was not the only reason I left so quickly. The other is that I needed to use the restroom and when I went there was literally urine on both toilet seats in the ladies room. With that, I took my business to Catbirds (a decent dive bar across Westheimer), where I knew I could get a decent drink and use the restroom without contracting some sort of disease. read more

Accidentally stumbled in to Boondocks trying to find Stone's Throws. It's definitely a true dive bar. Very casual, eclectic crowd, cheap drinks. The bartender was friendly and poured generously.
