An amazing place to lose yourself in for a few hours and find some gems within the aisles at Bookwise. The place is quite big and the shelves are well stocked with old and new books at good prices. It may take a little bit to learn the genres and if you're looking for specific books, you may need to ask the staff for help. The staff here are nice and when I called to ask if they accepted donations, they politely said yes they will accept small amounts. I assume they may limit the amount they accept as there are many boxes of books there that are not even opened or on the shelves yet so they may be back logged. Bookwise is a family owned and operated used book store that has been serving Boca Raton since 1992. In October of 2020 they moved from Spanish River Blvd to 145 NW 20th St, Boca Raton, FL. Bookwise shares space with a textbook store, Booksmart, which serves students at FAU's and PBSC's Boca campuses with textbooks, shirts, and college accessories. In a time when so many independent book stores have gone under it was a pure delight to discover Bookwise. On well organized and labeled shelves you will find a wide range of books including fiction, non fiction, children's books, art, history, biographies, and reference books. The intoxicating smell of the store is familiar to anyone who loves books. Throughout the store are cute displays and cozy nooks that are perfect for curling up with a engrossing read. The friendly staff is always on hand to make recommendations and help you find what your next favorite book. I saw many of the books I have previously enjoyed and picked up some new books for when I hit the beach on my upcoming spring break. What a gem I found today! Out of my love for books, books, and even more books, I found this wonderful used bookstore. The attendants were just as happy to greet me, as a new customer, as I was to find a book I wanted as soon as I walked in. I'm happy to see bookstores still around. People still do find books enjoyable to read, to purchase, keep, and give away as gifts. Book-giving has created some of the longest friendships I have which I cherish deeply. I was able to pick up a few bookmarks to give away which has information about the stores' hours and the many categories they stock. The store is very unassuming. The small windows in the front don't give allude to the magnitude of the place. It's a huge bookstore, filled with all kinds of books from Architecture, to Art, Music, to Books on Tape, Children's Books, Classics, New Age, Romance, and so much more. While I will admit I have a bias for this store's old location, which I used to visit on dog days in the sun-drenched stillness of summer and rainy Saturdays or when the Owls were on the road against Rice or UNT during my college years, to sit on the semicircular borne settee among piles and shelves of biology and literary criticism books pungent with age, to get headbutted and meowed at by the aged Mr Bojangles the obligatory resident nook-and-cranny bookstore cat, I stopped by with my wife and newborn daughter this weekend to the new location which I recall once visiting when it was just their textbook depot for anyone who wasn't quick enough to grab a used copy of their $300 chemistry textbook at the on campus Barnes and Noble College or grab a new iClicker because they left theirs in General North during a Jakubow lecture and need a new one ASAP for Wednesday's attendance clicker quiz. All the same books were on the same shelves, the same comforting smell and taste of books that have lived through history as well as contain it, but it lost a bit of that soft magic now that the FAU merch and textbook displays are right there in front of you, and a new fiction table right out of Books-A-Million dominates the foyer. There's still always something unique to find, though, whether it's the newest thriller, a signed copy from one of your favorite authors, a new mystery, a dense classic, or yes even some useful academic reading. Prices are fair, the occasional trade is in nice, but it will never quite be the same for me or my wife who remember those simpler college days sifting through paperbacks lining the carpet before the big this or exciting that in those big exciting college days. Because Thomas Wolfe was right, we will remember Bookwise fondly but remain disappointed we can't recapture the way we loved it then, it doesn't mean I'm not confident you won't fall in love with the snug embrace of those nooks and crannies among the tall shelves of countless tomes hovering around you like a mother looking down on her newborn fast asleep on a quiet summer's eve. read more

Highly recommend. I am a History buff, and book collector. I value hardcover with dj's and Bookwise never fails to deliver. I can easily drop $100.00 or more on many hard to find books. I travel from about 1 hour away but definitely worth the trip. read more

They do a fine job of selecting the books they'll sell so that this store fills a solid niche between outlets that sell new books and libraries. It is more fun to browse in than either a new book store or even a library. Friendly managers and clientele. Very large selection. Lots of places to read. Went in today for the first time and got some amazing books :) i really liked the atmosphere in there. Due to Covid I wasn't able to donate any of my books, but I understand. I was in there for an hour or so and the workers were super understanding and nice. I will 100000% come again. Very happy we found Bookwise on a rainy Saturday afternoon. For some reason, Broward and Palm Beach seem to suffer from a shortage of good used/independent bookstores, but this is a notable exception. Its a great size and has lots of little comfy nooks to sit and read or browse. There is a huge selection of books in excellent condition, all of which are well-organized by category. In addition to the great variety of popular fiction books, we made great discoveries in the Children's book section and the well-stocked cookbook aisle which we picked up for much less than we would have paid at Barnes & Noble. There were also interesting shelves of graphic novels, political science books, history and reference books. The store is staffed by very friendly book lovers and a happy ginger cat, definitely worth a trip. read more

My second-favorite used bookstore in Broward-Palm Beach area. They have a HUMONGOUS selection of just about everything, you can browse in there for hours and kill an afternoon enjoyably. I'm a science fiction fan, and they have a respectable science fiction & fantasy section so I never leave empty handed. My genres are exploration, the old west, and aviation history and their selections are always refreshed every time I come. Some books are expensive and some are cheap, I can't discern the rhyme or reason but with a hundred bucks to spend I usually come out with 10 books or so, give or take, and many are so old I imagine you'd be hard pressed to find them anywhere. Great store with a wide variety of books, including collectible items or lovely leather-bound reference books that would look nice on a shelf. They seemed to be getting ready to move inventory when I visited, and many books were 10-20% off. They don't have as many textbooks or educational materials, but a staff member was quick to let me know about the location on 20th St. that carries more of that stuff. There is also seating in the back corner and some tables for people who want to browse through a book. Meh... the store cat is probably the best part of the place :). pretty decent bookstore otherwise, unique in its own way. I would give it less stars if it wasn't for the fact it's one of the last used book stores in the area, so compared to the other one place around, it's basically guaranteed second place... The selection pretty good, depending on what you're looking for. Some vintage books as advertised, but nothing truly antique. Just overpriced stuff from the turn of the century. The scifi and fantasy selection is ok for a store of this size, but nothing interesting. Paperbacks are mixed in with trade and hardcovers, not too visually consistent. Paperbacks are half the publisher price, or a minimum of a dollar or so. You won't really find anything vintage, interesting or collectible in genre fiction here. In non-fiction, trade size and hardcovers are priced at half price as well, which is not typical for most of these stores. You'll see really old, scuffy photo and cookbooks from Italy, for example, aged and outdated which originally sold for $30 as coffee table books, now you can buy them for 15. Head over to the pretty much last other remaining used book store in Pembroke Pines -- Volume One -- and get the same books for 4.50 - 6 bucks. Science books are similarly priced -- a 20 year old trade size on astronomy they wanted 12$. A quick check online over at Amazon showed over 350 copies for sale starting at 4.85 including shipping. Again, their fiction and paperbacks are priced relatively competitively, but everything else will stagnate at those prices. They do not have a computerized inventory system, so basically they don't know what they have in stock unless they can remember it or look it up on the shelf while you wait on the phone. This could be a plus or minus if you're looking to trade in books, since not knowing what they have they can either take in doubles (your win) or reject stuff they don't have but could sell (both their and your loss). Usually they go to the shelves to see what they've got for each book (problem if you bring a lot). I've done a few trades before -- the staff is not knowledgeable on what sells, especially in mystery, scifi and fantasy. Stuff they reject I sell at other bookstores even in doubles where it's gone off the shelves by the next time I visit. They like to keep one copy of each book. Again, a computerized inventory system with a sold-to-date report would have made them a lot more efficient. They have the space, they just don't have the expertise to fill it efficiently. Basically everything published after 2005 in Mystery, General Fiction, Thriller, Scifi and Fantasy you can find cheaper online on Abe and Amazon including the shipping. The value is again good for books older than 1990, but they don't have much of that in mystery, sf/f, fiction and general. The clientele seems to be fairly eclectic because of their 'vintage' books and the general section, but mostly seems to be retirees browsing around the romance section. A note on the advertised "largest in south Florida" size: depends on what you're looking at. Volume One has by far more Fiction, probably upwards of 15,000 romance books, and easily 4 times the sf/f.) The largest used book store in SoFL was The Bookworm up in Lake Worth, which had at least 3 times the square footage of Bookwise and floor to ceiling shelving, but that closed in 2017.... Worth it if you're in the area already. Not worth it if you have to drive more than about 20 mins -- head online in that case. read more

I didn't check the fiction section but saw a lot of classics there. I have been shopping at this bookstore since I was a child and it truly is a gem of Boca Raton. Their selection and store size rivals any major bookstore yet it retains the charm and atmosphere of a local family operated business. They also carry collections of rare and antique books which you won't find anywhere else, adding to the variety offered. The employees are very kind and helpful, and they will not bother you unless you ask them or look puzzled. Sometimes you have to search for a bargain, however it usually doesn't take long and is part of the experience itself. With the various chairs and tables set up throughout cozy nooks in the store, you can literally end up spending hours here! To top off everything, they have a bookstore cat named Mr. Bo, who is one of the friendliest cats I've ever encountered. He is very receptive to people, allowing you to pet him freely and is more like a dog than a cat. In addition, Bookwise also has a store called Booksmart nearby which offers college textbooks at discounted prices. Overall, you should definitely stop by Bookwise first to find a book you're looking for before turning to B&N or Amazon for all your book needs. read more
