Bookstore -- more than books! (MANILA Philippines)…read more My two daughters would absolutely love this bookstore if we had one in the U.S. My 10-year old niece who resides in the Philippines introduced me to this store when I told her that I was looking for Sonny Angel merchandise for my adult daughter at home who loves this stuff. Not only did they have them but they had so many different kinds of Pop Mart blind box merchandise meaning you do not know which figure you will receive until you buy one and open the box. The bookstore also carries a good selection of Manga books series which my other daughter would be excited to see. For Yuko Shimizu fans... they sell the mural shirts here too. After all the searching for the Sonny Angel merch I was glad to find them in this bookstore and surprised my child with the plush. Customer service was excellent, they were very friendly and helpful. Great prices! The bookstore is located in the Mitsukoshi BGC in Taguig Metro Manila. Review #3294

This particular branch is really fun to stay in, because it's hardly ever full. The staff are used to dealing with the "college kid" demographic, and know all the latest Young Adult or Romance hits, and are very responsive when you want to have one ordered from another branch to be picked up or to pre-order a book. It's especially nice to hole up in the back part of the branch or in the couch seat in one corner and just will the hours away. There's fancy stationary and pens available too, if you find yourself short of any. Another thing I love about it is how it's right next to a Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf branch, where you can enjoy your latest book buy with some warm tea and pastries to keep you company.

Conveniently placed in Katipunan, students, teachers and even parents are the usual customers who drop by at this branch. I personally go to Fully Booked to buy quality art supplies that may not be found in other bookstores. I also find some of their items exclusive that's great for gift shopping. This particular branch may not be big enough to house the particular item(s) you're looking for, but the staff can help you find them at the other bigger branches in the metro. The downside for me is that their items can be pricey and buying from there can make your wallet cry :( However, the place for me can be a good treat-yourself once in a while. It will also help to avail their membership card if you're planning to buy books and supplies there regularly. I will surely drop by Fully Booked once in a while to update myself with cool art stuff and perhaps buy a book as well. :)

Stocked with mostly second-hand and dog-eared books, Booksale is a bargain heaven for the bibliophile. You really never know what you might stumble upon while combing through the shelves of the store. Art books for the fraction of the price in high-end bookstores sit on the shelves, waiting to be discovered by the keen treasure hunter. There's also a sizeable collection of hardbound books, science fiction titles, graphic novels, comic books, cook books, gardening how-to's, novelty and humor reads and so much more. If you're on the hunt for past issues of both local and international magazines, you are in for a treat. There are hundreds of titles to scour and they never cost more than an arm and a leg.

I've been in and out of various Book Sales all over Manila, and it's a fantastic place to look for pre-loved books at a fraction of the cost. Personally, I love going here to buy coffee tables books. There are a couple of good finds to be had here. You just have to be diligent when you do dig around. The branch at Makati Square is typical of most of their branches, but it does have a bit more elbow room than the others. They also have an inordinate number of kiddle books, so that's a plus for parents.

Maybe it's the high foot traffic, or maybe because it's the access to the masses, but I see a lot of pop-up bookstalls near train lines, and it makes me happy how bookworms like me now have access to good books at cheap prices, and how more people get to read because of the actions of these selfless bibliophile entrepreneurs. Mang Ed of Jerbs (formerly Juleric) is no exception. He sells his secondhand books dirt-cheap, and he does it at one of the most high-traffic areas in the metro: the Guadalupe MRT station. I love that he's also very hands-on with every customer. He doesn't care who you are - if you love books, he will be there with you, telling you about his favorite titles and sharing nuggets of wisdom from the literary world. Be warned though - this place is in full view of the afternoon sun and can get pretty sauna-ish. Bring sunblock.

Okay, wait. That's a lie. I do get attracted to really colorful covers, but more often than not, these covers interest me because they have something to do with my favorite topics and subjects when it comes to books: economics, social and political commentary, non-fiction, memoirs, biographies and humor. I like independent and second-hand bookstores like Jerbs because I don't really care about the condition of the books that I'm reading. Nor would I shell out full price for something that I can get way cheaper. Yes, browsing humid and unorganized bookstores like Jerbs could be quite like trawling for a needle in a haystack, but what's also wonderful is that you will never know what you'll end up buying. The mish-mash variety of all the books in this place makes it a treasure trove for finds just waiting to be discovered. The shopkeeper, Sir Ed, is the epitome of well-read and bookish bookseller. It would be a shame if a person owning and selling thousands of books isn't well-read himself, and it's a relief that Sir Ed always has tidbits of information and wisdom about the books that I have read. I have never been back in this bookshop in a long time but it's nice to know that there is always this one place (aside from a dozen others) that I can go to when I am in need of my next book.
