Bookay Ukay's new bookshop along Maginhawa is both an unexpected and welcome sight - a mirage of sorts. Who would imagine that a well-curated bookshop would pop up randomly amid a busy street, beside a beauty parlor and a clothes boutique? I used to go to Bookay Ukay a lot when they still had their old store beside the old Tomatokick in Mahusay Street. When I moved to Diliman, I was delighted to know that despite the old TK building being readied for demolition, Bookay Ukay merely transferred to a new location only a few minutes away from the old one.
Dan, the owner of the bookstore is always present and ready to give recommendations. He is a very well-read and enthusiastic book lover who never runso out of fun stories. You could see him biking or skateboarding in front of his store, but he will always pause a while to welcome customers into his small but well-stocked store. The pun behind the name suggests that you literally have to "ukay", paw at the shelves to find the next book that you are going to enjoy. Or you can enlist the help of the nice shopkeepers for a title, a CD, magazine or a publication that you are hunting for.
I always go back for his collection of popular classics and books on political economy. You can also count on Dan to source rare and hard-to-find books for you - just talk to him and he will see what he can do. He is very well-connected within the used books universe of Manila and he has contacts that he can tap if you are looking for certain titles that are not available on his shelves. For Maginhawa residents, it is also a buy-and-sell joint, and Dan will gladly take books that you are willing to sell. read more
