Believe it or not, in this age of e-books, blogs, and other forms of "soft" media that don't use paper, there is still a demand for good old-fashioned, heavy, soft- or hard-bound books. When I get a hankering for a real copy of classics like Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings" or am scouting for a coffee table book, I head on over to "Book Sale" at Makati Cinema Square. This particular branch is one of the largest, and has, in my opinion, one of the better selections. If you go to other Book Sale branches, you might just find a lot of old and not-so interesting issues of National Geographic and Sudoku books. Book Sale book nooks (well they are mostly nooks where you find them) are handy places for me to while away the time, or try my luck at finding a great book for cheap. When you enter the store, you'll find a lot of bins with a lot of back issues of everything from Simple Living to Wallpaper to Cosmopolitan to Men's Fitness, to Soldier of Fortune. From these bins is where you'll likely find a magazine you'll read a couple of times then consign it to some shelf or under your bed; I can't tell you how many times this has happened, me and my Dad are guilty of this. Anyway, the last time I lucked out some years back, I found a hardbound copy of "The Art of the Matrix" in almost pristine condition, for only P300 (great, now where did I put that?). My bit of unsolicited advice for anyone book-hunting at Book Sale: If you find it and it's good, get it or someone else will, and you never know when they'll have it back in stock. Do remember that these are USED books, so it's not like they can easily restock anything worthwhile. The cute part about buying a book here is that sometimes you can even find handwritten dedications of some former owners on the inside flaps, or even a library card sleeve on the inside of the back cover. That's part of the adventure in going to Book Sale, as one famous character once said, "...you never know what you're gonna get". It's part scavenger hunt, part adventure, and part gamble when you're digging up a worthy magazine or coffee table book here. read more
