Recycle Books Records is a true Texas gem!…read more This amazing used bookstore and record store is located in the heart of Denton, TX inside a 100+-year-old opera house. They have been independently and family-owned for over 40 years, and they are a must-stop for all book and music lovers out there. This store is HUGE with over half-a-million books, movies, music and memorabilia. However, I think what makes them extra special is the curated selection of Horror and Thriller books, including some very unique collectibles. I am more into contemporary, so keep in mind those books are located on the top floor of their second building. Their children's book section was also incredible but frankly I didn't have the patience to go through them. This store can be a little overwhelming so definitely take a breath and ask for help if you can't find the genre you are looking for.

A trip to Stonebriar Mall with the grandkids, and of course we had to stop in at Barnes & Noble…read more Thankfully, they all love to read! Readers are leaders! We checked out the young reader section and the displays in the children's area. Since school is starting soon, we didn't buy anything this trip. They pointed out some books that they had read over the summer. They found a cute Pusheen (stuffie cat) that is exclusive to Barnes & Noble. But, the price was pretty pricey for a stuffie. I'm sure if we have a book on our shopping list and we are in this area, we might stop in again.

Today was my first time to go to the Stonebriar Mall Barnes & Noble store, and I was impressed with…read moretheir selections. It's one of the biggest B&N stores I have been to so far. The children's area had the most toys I've ever seen at any of these places. And even thought it's large, I saw things that remind me of what a thoughtful bookstore should have in it. Children sitting on benches reading and laughing. Teens talking about the books they're buying and looking forward to reading that story. And adults having fun with their children. And I must say, isn't that what a bookstore should be about? Laughter, imagination, excitement to read. It truly made my heart happy to see and feel their joy as I walked through the book isles. There's a B&N store close to my house, and I never see or feel what I experienced at this store. That speaks volumes to me. And yes, I bought a book. Every year I look for that special Halloween book I can share with my granddaughter. Today I added the children's book, "We Are Already Haunting Here" by Gideon Stere. I can't wait to share it with her!

Patchouli Joe's Books was an okay bookstore for me…read more After reading some of their amazing reviews, and exploring some of the other bookstores around Denton I had high expectations for this store. However, I don't know if we caught them on a bad day, if their inventory was really low after Indie Bookstore Day the weekend before, or if the stars just weren't aligned that day but the store itself was very empty. The book selection was minimal and the staff was not exactly helpful. Frankly the store felt too big for the minimal amount of books they had. Also customer service was absent that day and after asking some questions to the person at the counter you could tell he just didn't want to be there. The difference in customer interaction between this store and others around Denton was like night and day. Would I come back to Patchouli? Maybe, but it wouldn't be my first stop when visiting Denton.

And you create a space that honors the building and updating it with warm wood and fixtures, you're doing it right in my opinion. I loved the selections offered here and so did my daughters and granddaughter. Yes, I bought books here and my granddaughter was thrilled. There's a dedicated children's area with nice seating for them. There was a touch of magic there. Kids were happy and couldn't wait to get to the next book. That is what a book store is supposed to be about. I met the owners and both are genuinely nice and they care about their customers and their business. Both are very knowledgeable and more than happy to help in any way. If you're in Denton, you need to drop in and browse around - I bet you walk out with a great book!
