Can't believe how ignorant and unprofessional some people can be, and to treat costumers with such hostility and contempt to the point we felt targeted, unwelcomed, and so uncomfortable that we may never go back to this book store again if this is how they allow their employees to behave. Yesterday, I went with my family, my 7yo autistic niece and 5yo autistic son to this store, and was targeted by a female employee who couldn't stand the children. She yelled at them from 4 aisles over, then made sure to be at the register as both of us moms, at separate times, checked out to complain to the other cashier about our kids right in front of us. When we realized it, and said "sorry I think you're talking about our kids, their Autistic just to let you know" she never apologized for her behavior, instead just insisted they were too loud for her to work! To both of us, two separate times! Completely ignorant women, doesn't belong in costumer service never mind society due to her lack of respect for others. They need to get rid of her, we won't be going back there! read more

I've never really liked shopping here because of the pushy salespeople that try to make you sign up for their membership, but I definitely will not be returning after they pressured my 17 year old daughter into getting "free" magazines. Lesson learned, they weren't free and she wasn't aware that the debit card she used to purchase a book was also used to charge her for three magazine subscriptions. Apparently they have been doing this for years. Please take your business to Gibsons instead where they won't try to sell you anything you don't want. read more

Slow service at the cafe. Surprisingly little variety in of choices for such a large space. Restrooms are run down and often unclean. A huge selection of magazines and periodicals. Lots of toys and novelties. No physical media such as Bluray, DVD, or music CDs (other than a few poor quality used DVDs). The manager is a little rude-ish. read more

You know, I usually pretty on top of things when someone is trying to scam me. Unfortunately this one got thru. So I went to BAM in concord to buy a travel book for an upcoming trip. At check out the woman at the counter says "oh wait, as a thank you for coming in a supporting our store we want to give you a gift." She the proceeds to tell me they (remember, she said "THEY") wanted to give me a couple magazines and THEY would send them to my house. She only needed my address. I'm thinking what's the harm I give my address out for raffles all the time. Not like I'm giving her my social or credit card number. For about three months nothing arrived which I'm like no big deal. Suddenly I have several charges on my credit card from a processing company. I do a little checking and find out the clerk at BAM signed me up for 3 subscriptions. Somehow she pulled my credit card number off the system and SOLD me another company's subscription. Seriously?! I just got scammed by a store selling magazine subscriptions. Beware! Don't shop her! They are underhanded and lack common customer service skills. FYI, still didn't get the free magazine. read more

Books-A-Million (BAM!) recently opened in the Fort Eddy Plaza, taking over the former Borders space. It was sad to see Borders close as I was a frequent customer and former Borders Rewards Plus member. I took advantage of the Borders "going out of business" sales only a few months ago, but I'm very glad to see another bookstore move in so quickly. Books-A-Million took over several former Borders locations throughout the US. I've shopped at several Books-A-Million stores when I spent time in Florida. The layout of the new Concord Books-A- Million store is very similar to the former Borders and it feels like Borders never closed, just the name of the store changed. The magazine section, cafe (Joe Muggs), children's books, and music & movies are still in the same locations and the selection of books and discounted bargain books here is good and still growing as Books-A- Million settles in (the back of the store still feels a bit empty). Books-A- Million also sells cards, gifts, games, toys, Yankee Candle products, and Nook. Joe Muggs Coffee Cafe offers coffee & espresso drinks, baked goods, and free wi-fi. The CDs in the music section are priced very competitively, most popular CDs are priced $7.99-$13.99 and they offer discounted DVDs for $6.97. Books-A- Million also offers a Millionaire's Club (card) membership for $20 a year, which gets you discounts (10%-40%) on almost everything in the store and online at http://www.booksamillion.com and special offers are emailed. My trip to BAM was one of my most frustrating shopping experiences. I thought ahead and looked on the website to see if they had the book I was looking for. Yes, it was in stock. I drove 18 minutes to the store. Looked in the area it said it would be. Looked it up on the computer store, yes, still says in stock. Ask a sales associate. They look on the computer, yes it's there. They look around and say it's not in the store. I said, "I made sure to look on your website before I drove here." And does the sales associate say So sorry? No. She's says, "well, you should have called." Okay. Turn it around to be my lack of preparation. Seriously such a waste of my time. Thanks, I'll just order my books from Amazon. read more

Meh it's just OK. I miss it when it was borders, they had a much better selection, and better prices. The cafe is nice, but always busy.

Compared to Borders, this bookstore is a disaster. The selection is abysmal. First, almost half of it is bibles. I'm glad they sell bibles! But seriously. Entire rows of bibles. Bibles-a-million! Second, whoever stocks this store does not appear to know where New Hampshire is located. I went in to pick up a garden book, and the local gardening area had mostly books on southern gardening. Third, as with Borders, a lot of the space is toys. But then, the rest was packed with books. BAM's books are... sparse. Normally I avoid bookstores unless I have hours to kill, but this place didn't invite lingering. The whole vibe was dingy and sad. The lights were flickering & there were few customers. The rest room was out of order. Empty shelves & apparently haphazard arrangement didn't help. I didn't even like the coffee shop. Well ok, the coffee shop is fine. You can get coffee there. Mine was mediocre though. I guess I can't really comment on anything else, and truthfully this was a little while ago. On the plus side, the parking is easy? read more

This is a great place to kill some time or do some shopping. The store is quite large, nicely laid out and is full of books, games gifts & magazines. Surprisingly they have an excellent selection of books and both the hus and I were happy to find exactly what we were looking for. It's almost exactly like Barnes & Noble, especially with their displays and feature products like the Nook. A benefit is that they also have a coffee shop on site with wi-fi which is perfect for getting some work done or meeting with friends. Plus the parking lot is huge and getting in and out is a breeze with the amount of registers that are open. read more

Going into BAM feels like walking into the wreckage left behind when the twister went through Borders. The best thing about BAM is their staff who are always friendly and helpful. They don't have a good selection of books. On one occasion I went in to buy Cat's Cradle by Vonnegut and they didn't have it! That is a very basic book for a store of that size to have. Another problem is that the system will say they have a book (even two copies) and then they will find out that had been a system glitch for months and they have no copies. The DVD/Blueray section is always highly disorganized and has little to offer. They have too many toys, T-shirts and other novelties. I would actually enjoy these sections if BAM also supplied adequate books, music and/or movies. The two stars as opposed to one is for the great staff and the place might not be organized but it is at least clean. read more

I've been going to Books-A-Million for my local coffee-place-with-books fix for about a year now. The selection of books is closer to an airport newsstand than a real bookstore, but - meh - it was near by (-ish). A few days back I got burned by swinging by after dinner only to realize that they were closing at the seemingly early hour of 8:45pm. Tonight I crisply checked their hours on their website, found they were open till 10pm, drove 35 minutes there, and, as I was receiving my coffee, was told "oh, and we close in 10 minutes". I protested that the website said that they were open an hour later. The barista was sympathetic as he noted "yeah, everyone complains about that. The website never gets updated. We tell corporate, but they don't do anything." So I ended up driving over an hour, round trip, to spend 10 minutes in a crappy bookstore where even the employees know how bad things are. (Oh, side note: I've also told staff several times that most of the lights over the cafe section flicker annoyingly. They've responded "yes, we're sorry. Everyone complains about that, but it never gets fixed." This has been a problem for over six months.) !@#$ it. From now on I'm never going to BAM! again; I'll just drive the extra half hour round trip to go to the Barnes & Noble in Manchester. read more

They offered me "free" magazines then after they ran my debit card they told me if I didn't cancel it in two days they would charge my debit card. Charge my debit for something FREE?? I've only visited BAM! a few times since it replaced the Borders in Concord and I have yet to be impressed. Cashiers push too hard for people to get that membership. Even after having said "no thank you" 3 times the cashier this afternoon kept pushing, adding more details about why I should get a membership. It comes across as desperate and it makes myself and other uncomfortable. Never before have I shopped at a location that pushed as hard for membership as BAM! does. Not to mention that while their selection is generally very good (lots more books than Gibson's, great comics and graphic novels section) they label things quite badly. Today the graphic novels section had signs advertising a sale beneath every row of books. However when I got to the register I was informed that only books with stickers were a part of that sale. These books were not arranged in any particular order, were not of any specific publishing company, nadda. A waste of my time and I'm sure many others. Overall the experience shopping there is pressured, not calm. Staff members at the register are pushy and overly involved, and will not take no for an answer. I will be getting the majority of my books online now. read more

The handicapped stall in the men's room was out of order; A comment written on the handwritten sign on the door stated that it had been so "for months." I don't know whether that's true but given how well organized the rest of the store isn't, I have no difficulty believing that. I suppose any bookstore is better than an empty store, but this place makes me mourn the loss of Borders. read more

This place is terrible! I used to go to Boarders and hated how every time I went to the counter they would ask if you wanted a "premium rewards card" which costed $20 but "would make up the price with the coupons in only a couple purchases". I finally got it and then they went out of business a month later. When I called corporate for a refund they said they didn't care to make me happy because they were going under. The new BAM place is just as bad. When I go to the counter I say up front "please don't tell me about a rewards card" and what do they do? Go ahead and ramble on about it! Very rude. They have all the old inventory from Boarders only now its worse because it was boxed up then unboxed during moving and the books are torn and have wear. It has a very warehouse like feel and the workers are always clueless as to what good recommendations to give. I will never go to a box store again. I found a local store called Gibson's which is everything a book store should be. read more

I wish we had BAM in Massachusetts! Lovely selection of books and geek goodies. This location had a nice comic and graphic novel selection. Not as many books on sale as some locations though. Very big store. Lots of roaming employees just waiting to help you which is a nice touch. I loved the Halloween selection of cute items. Tempted, oh so tempted, but I was good and resisted. I rarely buy physical books now (thank you, Kindle Fire) but every now and then I'll find one at a good price. Not this trip but browsing is still super fun for the nerdy English major in me! read more

The store is great until you go to checkout. You are bombarded with offers to sign up for their discount club, magazine subscriptions and whatever they happen to be selling that day. They act as though everything is free and don't explain the fine print. My 16yo daughter was deceptively sold a bag for $5 because the cashier said, "You spent $25 so we are giving you a bag. What color do you want?" She didn't realize there was a charge for it and was too shy to say anything after the transaction was over. They definitely take advantage of people who may not be aware of their deceptive language and selling practices. read more

Pretty good,there's delectable coffee. A wide and broad selection of books. The staff are amazing they are friendly and fantastic to be around. The music is good at reasonable prices. It's quiet,calm, and relaxing. You can sit down read a good book, while your kids play with the toys they have. Drink some hot coffee and a croissant and ahhh just perfect. Buy some books for home and you are all set. Also lots of good books for studying or just stuff you are interest in learning. read more

I am VERY disappointed in the staff at this location. Twice my friends and I were meeting in the cafe area and TWO HOURS before closing the staff proceeded to LOUDLY vacuum the area near the cafe, making it nearly impossible for us to visit. We have since moved our meetings to Gibsons Bookstore. So rude and inconsiderate. If cleaning needs to be started that early, there is no reason it can't be started in an area away from the cafe. read more
