Wow. This gently used book store is truly amazing. I visited once before as I accidentally stumbled upon the old book sale a few years back. I was searching for summer garage sales and saw the signs leading to the owners garage book sale. Since then, the store moved to an incredibly cool looking vintage attic in a quaint little house that was built in the 1800's! Oh, the stories those walls would tell if they could! The walls are just covered with books from one end to the other. A book worm's heaven. Everything is well categorized and easy to search through. Hard cover, paper back, board books, interactive books, kid books, adult books and everything in between. The books are in excellent condition and incredibly affordable. The prices range from about a dollar something to six dollars and some change. There are two large rooms but for the purpose of my visit I spent most of my time in the kid section. The walk in closet has been converted into a quaint little reading nook. With throw pillows and books from wall to wall ceiling to floor! Perfect attraction for a child that just wants to curl up and read. There are even some toys in the main room, a stool to sit on, and a knee cushion in case you choose to kneel. Pam, the owner has thought of everything :) I messaged Pam on facebook that I needed about 20+ children's books. Normally the store is closed on Sundays but she replied promptly and opened the store for a few hours since she was going to be there doing some work anyway. You just cannot beat that service! Pam is great. She greeted me upon entry and explained everything to me, giving me a mini tour and telling me a bit about her business. She gets her books from donations and sometimes has more than her store can carry. She has made a partnership with a non-profit organization to help deliver books to needy children on an Indian reservation is South Dakota. Bless her heart. I purchased the books to use as favors for my daughter's birthday party. When I got home my kids (4 and 1) dumped the bag and immediately started scoping out the treasure I brought home. The older one was camera shy but I was able to snap a cute pic of the little one engulfed in a book that caught her interest. I'm usually a bit more of a stickler when it comes to giving out Five star reviews. Four is usually indicative of an awesome experience but 5 means the experience went over and beyond my expectations. Amazing job book lady. Best of luck, we support you and hope the attic is around for a long, long time! Can't wait to bring the kids in next time and maybe even catch one of your story times. :)

My son enjoys to read BOOKS , not Kindles or iPads and it so hard to find a book store that is not aggressively priced. The Book Lady's Book Attic is just the kind of place where my son can go look for books and buy 10 books the same price as one at big retailers. The book lady does so much for kids, I was able to observe the thoughtfulness of one lady to all the children that came in to her store. She is amazing. I would highly recommend The Booklady's Book Attic not just to my friends and family but to anyone that will listen.

There was an eclectic blend of choices but they didn't have two titles I was seeking, and the clerk seemed slightly annoyed when I inquired. The restaurant, though small, was more accessible, and had some great food! I had the roast pork apple sandwich and my friend got the signature salad, and we split the bourbon pecan pie, all of which were delicious. Our server was friendly and attentive even though it was busy, and other servers also kept an eye on bussing empty plates from our table. Parking is across the street; both crosswalks had steps leading down from the parking lot. Would certainly return for the cafe!

Secret World Books - A little more of the Secret Garden! (Feb 2025)

This is the book store I always wished had been at this location! Prior to Secret World Books…read moreopening up here, it was a religious reading room. The space was so nice looking, and they had this adorable little garden in the back that I had only gotten glimpses of for years (like as far back as the 1990s) - but it didn't cater to my tastes and beliefs, so I never really visited there. Secret World Books recently occupied the space, and turned it into everything I love about small independently owned book nooks, which makes me so happy! They have a nicely-curated collection of books. Such a small shop obviously cannot compare to major book stores in sheer volume, but runs laps around them when it comes to style and vibe (sorry, I'm probably gonna say 'vibe' a lot here, please bear with). If you want books from local authors, if you want well-loved hidden gems that maybe missed the "[Insert Celebrity Name] Book Club™®©" spotlight, if you want to find some gently-read books with character unique to used books, if you're looking for some retro magazines, if you like comic books / graphic novels, if you're into tabletop RPGs, if you want books catering to out-of-the-box thinkers, and might enjoy an inviting safe space for people of all walks of life... Yeah, this just might be your place. And if you DO want the latest greatest manufactured-viral or pop culture hit, the Secret World staff can still get it for you, and seem chill about it. Hey, sometimes I just wanna read the latest entry in a best-selling megacorporation-owned franchise, without being judged... It's all good. Just go to the front and ask them to get a copy for you; easy peasy, lemon squeezy. Just maybe also consider looking behind the counter at their collection of books from local and lesser-known authors, who might have something that'll pull you in. It's so tough for local artists, crafters, writers, and other creative individuals go get traction; IMO, it's always bodacious when you put a little effort into checking 'em out, and generate some word-of-mouth magic to help them advance their message and/or skills. You might even just run into an author you know. They recently had some poets reading from their works, including Katana Smith and Highland Park's own poet laureate Laura Joyce-Hubbard. This weekend they'll have authors Jenna Satterwaite and Beth Kander. Seems like this is a somewhat common occurrence here... Pretty cool, huh? Oh, man, and the atmosphere here is sooo... I dunno, my ADHD want to say "cozy" and "crunchy" at the same time. "Crunchozy?" Thanks, wacky-internal-monologue-voice! Secret World feels nice and chill, but still filled with positive lively vibes. It's physically just comfortable, too. They have some comfy seats and a tea station that adds to the vibe, plus a gorgeous view of their secret garden. Dude, they even call it the "Secret Garden," which - funny(ish) personal story - I've been calling it for years. Literally, for decades, I had known there was a cool little secluded garden back there; but it's completely walled in, so I could only catch fleeting glimpses. I had a running head-canon that I would unlock an Elder Scrolls-esque mission there someday. I finally got to see it in person, and it's even cooler now! No RPG mission yet, but I'll be back to see what the zen racoon has to say. Okay, sorry, I've babbled on enough. Secret World Books book store: Cool place. Nice books. Friendly peeps. Comfy vibe. They spread the word on exercising your 5th amendment rights. They have complementary hot tea. Plenty of free street parking, near some 2-hour-free public parking lots. Neighbors to Curt's Café. Yeah, pretty awesome. Books; check 'em out!
