This bookstore is a life changing experience if you love old & antique books. The size and significance of the collection in this store is hard to wrap your mind around & even harder to describe. To say it transports you is an understatement. To say it inspires doesn't do it justice. If you love old books , this is a bucket list MUST EXPERIENCE. The owners is beyond knowledgeable and graciously shares his expertise with those so inclined to learn and experience the world he has created. All the great works, such beauty, such history. I will be back. read more

Nice little spot. But no real YA section to really speak of. Thought maybe I had missed the section itself and was directed back to this small wall with only a few options. Great for other sections on history, art and so many others. But was really hoping for a great YA section and this place did not deliver unfortunately. read more

So many books to go through! Great options and an amazing price. I would recommend this place for anyone who likes books. I love small businesses like this. More people need to go to small businesses and support them. read more

Book Gallery - Books on books on books! - Bookstores Near Me - Phoenix, Arizona

Best selection of used books in the valley. Found a signed leather bound copy of No Exit here as well as an obscure book I've been looking for. Call beforehand to see if they have what you're looking for, they also only hold books for two days tops. They have a very knowledgeable staff and are always eager to help you find what you're looking for. read more

This is a great and unique bookstore. I had the privilege of interacting with the owner and his kind and helpful employees. The finds here are amazing. I recommend it. They have a section of old Bibles. I saw one as old as 1660! read more

Mike and his staff are very knowledgeable- and super professional! I highly recommend them.

I was immediately assisted as soon as I walked into the store, where I was looking for hard cover classics like Jane Austin and Cervantes and coffee table books about Arizona. The young woman helped me find the books on my list. They had almost all of them with gorgeous covers. They have a large Arizona section on geography, mineralogy, the Sonoran desert, the Native Americans, and history. The owner assisted with my Arizona history selection, sharing great stories about Arizona's and recommending which author I should purchase and why. When I asked why one book was so expensive, he explained the biography of the author and that it was a signed copy. I left the store with about a dozen books in great shape at very reasonable prices based some from fancy presses. I'll definitely go back. read more

HUGE store. This olace has something for everyone. They recently got a larger store and the aisles are spacious. Could have spent a long time exploring all the aisles and different book selections. Owner is extremely knowledgeable about authors and gave great recommendations. Love supporting local stores so give this one a shot! read more

This store is full of beautiful and interesting books. The inventory is overwhelming if your searching for a particular title like I was. Unfortunately the man behind the counter preferred to talk to a friend rather than assisting me with my inquiry. He told me to fill out a piece of paper with my search and that he would call me. I'm still waiting..... I guess I have to resort to online shopping. read more

Are you kidding me? Seriously... This is a total joke, right? I mean, I'm walking into a book store that is suppose to sell used and hard-to-find books, when I sadly realize the price isn't that much different than the original asking price. I found a book I wanted. I began to drool over it. Seriously... but for $50? The original price tag was $60. So, 10 bucks off? Maybe I got the wrong impression by the exterior. Maybe I was just hoping this place would sell used books that I could afford. After all, some where okay - $12 for a used copy of a popular novel. But, seriously, you can buy a new one for the same amount at Borders when you're part of their discount program. So, I don't get it. Maybe I'm not their ideal shopper, for I want a bargain. I don't want to wander through filled bookcases of WWII, Comics, Music, Fiction, Nature, Philosophy and discover some amazing gem that's going to set me back $50. Hell, that's 5 bottles of $10 wine. C'mon, you do the math! I would recommend this place to any one who likes to peruse book shelves and is in the market to find a "vintage" edition of a book. Or maybe anyone who likes dusting off the pages before reading about ancient warfare. This isn't for somebody who typically gravitates to the a certain section, knowing what she's looking for, expecting not to spend alot of money on what has become a really expensive habit. If you have an hour to kill and you like the ideal of stumbling upon something unique and original (book kismet), then check out Book Gallery. Don't expect first-rate service, though. I was there for a 1/2 hour - even carrying around what i REALLY wanted to buy - and not one person said a word to me. read more

Visited The Book Gallery on a whim to spend an afternoon with my significant other. This is the nicest possible version of a bookstore. I purchased a gift for my brother, and I will inevitably return soon. Every book seems to tell a different story. Hardcovered, dust jacketed, early editions abound here. The store owner has a fantastic amount of knowledge and is patient with his guests and kind with what he allows you to view/touch. One could easily spend hours here looking through an enormously impressive collection of books. It is what every local bookstore aspires to be. read more

All right Mr. Book Snob Man, this one's for you. Yes, I mistook your fine establishment for a Bookman's or a Half Price Books, I showed up with my milk crate full of old Stephen King paperbacks, some old scratched CDs from the 80s I've still got because even Zia won't buy 'em and a Super Mario Brothers cartridge - but still - did ya have to be such a jerk? You sized me up quick though, didn'tcha? I said, "You buy books?" and you said, "Um, well........." while you scrutinized me and my milk carton with those judgmental brown eyes of yours, "we buy high quality hard-to-find hardback books in near-mint to mint condition... do you think you have anything that might fit that description?" I didn't, but of course I said I did, and you explained that I needed to make an appointment with your 'buyer' ooh-la-la. So I looked around. Yeah, you've got some nice books. Some not so nice, too though. And a wee bit overpriced. I might have stayed longer, may even have made a purchase, but you're a jerk, so I didn't. read more

I am from Chicago & I must say the book gallery compared to others I have seen back home really is amazing. The owner was incredibly nice. When I walked in I was in awe of all the old books many still on great condition. As an avid book lover this store stole my hearts This store has a wide range of mystery, sci-fi, literature, children's books, occult, religious, jane austen, classic, westerns, archeology & Egyptians which was my favorite sections. Only thing this store doesn't carry is romance, which my mom was looking for but wasn't able to get. Next time I am in town, I will make sure to stop by the book gallery. read more

Such a cool book store! I never thought I would stumble upon the Narnia of books that this place is. Very great selection of collectors items, and novels for all the book lovers around! read more

As someone who knows Phoenix bookstores said to me, "they have great books.' That's the bottom line -- obviously excellent collections of rare antiquarian books find their way here. My only complaint is that the balance between the "secured area" of rare books in cases, and general used books on shelves, is tilted too far against access and towards security. It makes browsing a lot of work. Prices are very fair for the kinds of books they have. read more

Awful service, very cramped and when we made an appointment to bring stuff in, even after we delayed our time the owner was not prepared for us. We brought the books with us inside, provided they are antique and we didn't want them out in the 95+ heat, and stood around with them in our arms as the owner ignored us. Finally we said "Excuse us? We had an appointment?". He told us he was not ready yet and to wait, we were more than happy to. We set the books down in the only open space available, and he proceeded to yell at us not to put it in the way due to the fact that there's no room. When I began moving the books, after finding a better spot, he angrily said "Just stop I'll move them myself! You are in the way!" Do not recommend, especially after extended contact using the phone to set up the meeting in the first place. The owner was rude, unwelcoming, and overall very unhelpful as we try to clear out a deceased family members home, and treat their belongings with dignity. He quickly changed his tone when I suggested we might be better going somewhere else. Would have preferred he took a look at our belongings respectfully, even if stressed/overwhelmed by work, as we are also stressed/overwhelmed with work yet did not treat him anything but kindness. read more

Would give -5 if was an option. Take your business elsewhere as we were going in looking to spend a good chunck of money there. Barely got 5 feet into the store when the old man there got extremely rude and confrontational. We walked in while he was sorting through a stack of books that someone was trying to sell and he only took a few, the elderly lady was then told she can take them elsewhere or that he could "donate them" somewhere for her so my husband asked if she was just going to get rid of them could we look and make an offer if we found one we liked. Owner stepped in and refused us to talk to her any further and we stated that if he bought them we would have paid for them at his store but he passed on them and layed into us about how much he spends a month on rent and would not listen that we were offering to buy them from him too. Told my husband to leave which he walked out calmly but then berated him while leaving and while explaining to me what happened started taking our picture without permission. VERY unprofessional and honestly we both felt very discriminated against at this place. read more

My office is close to the "Book Gallery" and I have always wanted to swing by and check it out. I eventually did a few weeks ago, and I'm really glad I did. The selection of rare books is really quite amazing. I have to give a shout-out to the man who helped me, Randy, who not only had an amazing knowledge about their offerings, but also had a genuine enthusiasm for them. I picked up a few books, but I'll definitely be back. A fantastic place to pick out a special gift for a friend. read more

Book Gallery is my favorite bookstore. You can find Folio Society and Easton Press editions here, as well as many, many other very cool/unique books. Everything is priced very fairly. I was very happy to purchase an Easton Press book of W.B. Yeats's poetry (made out of leather!) for $25. I'll definitely visit this bookstore again and refer all my book-loving friends to it. read more

This place is awesome!!!!! We were in town visiting for a few days, and needed to buy a book to read by the pool. We spent close to an hour in here just browsing everything in the store - what a selection. Tons of old, new, rare, everything-in-between books. My boyfriend found an economics book he had been looking for online (currently retailing used on Amazon for $300!!!!) for only $17! I got two hardcover novels for $16. I was reading the Talk thread on book clubs and I recalled this place. It is a diamond in the rough and I shall go there this week to pick the cumulative brain of their staff:) Book Gallery is a place to lose time in the lovely smell of old books. Remember when libraries had copies of books with cut pages for regular circulation? When cellophane was a method of book covering? This is that kind of place. Complete collections of out of print serials, favorites from your parents' and grandparents' childhoods. In here I have found books printed in foreign languages other than Spanish, British food lore of the 50's and 60's and bookshelves gorgeous enough to lust after in their own right. War historians will find the most dedicated shelf space but there is something for nearly everyone to be had. I had a lovely game of when-was-it-printed judging only by a given tome's binding one Saturday afternoon at this location. The constant discoveries of interest kept the game going for at least two hours! read more

This is one of the coolest stores in Phoenix. The staff is amazingly knowledgeable and helpful. I love reading (a dream is to have a huge library in my home someday)! So, I can appreciate vintage books but knew nothing about how to begin buying them. The staff brought the importance and history of the books to life...without rushing or making me feel stupid. I felt their excitement as we moved about the store. Their enthusiasm was contagious. I picked a few books for myself and also got my nephew a vintage travel book as part of a graduation gift (he's a huge history fan). They also carry really interesting vintage maps. This will be a regular stop to support an amazing retailer. Thanks for bringing some depth and beauty to Phoenix!!! read more

This place is amazing! There are a ton of signed first editions and a great collection of rare books. On the more down to earth side there are very reasonably priced used books as well. The employees there are true book lovers. This place is an experience. It isn't a more commercial store with leather seats and places to sit and read. It's more of a place to browse and really appreciate what they have collected. There are boxes and piles around that have books that still need to be priced. Look for the price in the front of the book written in pencil to make sure you aren't grabbing one from a pile that is not yet available for sale. read more

Book Gallery is one of the best used bookstores anywhere. And I've lived in New York and Los Angeles. You would not expect this store's level of intellectuality here in Phoenix. If you are interested in politics, philosophy, economics, or history - this store has a better selection of books written by liberty loving people than I have ever seen. Rand, Mises, Hazlitt, Sowell...all here. The fiction is well-organized and the books are generally in excellent condition and priced to sell. They also have first editions for collectors. The staff is knowledgable and will take your contact info and call you when they get something you want. read more

I inherited hundreds of books as a family heirloom inheritance and had no room for them and wasn't sure what to do with them and wasn't sure how to find readers who would enjoy them. Many were printed in the 1800s so I thought they may have some value. I had a sizeable amount of books to consider for sale so Mike, the owner, came to my house to appraise them which was really nice. He purchased some at what seemed a fair price. Then he hooked me up with a non-profit (VNSA) that has an annual used book sale to support the foster system and literacy in Arizona and they came and picked up the rest. Thanks, Mike, for all of your help and professionalism. read more

They always have what I am looking for; some of the best hard to find books on the Occult or Sci-fi/ horror. The Mesa store is just as excellent. read more

I absolutely love this book store. I've been to the area a few times and have only ever visited Alcuin (which I also love). The selection of books is huge and fairly well organized. They seem to have a lot history, military and science books but their literature and art sections are also very well stocked. Once you browse for a bit you can get the "lay of the land". They have sections of better/rare books. Some are behind lock and key, others are not. Suffice to say that there are some very expensive books in the store but also a nice selection of general used books. I would hesitate to say this store will yield a bargain but prices seem fair to me. I was after fine press books so I was prepared for rare book prices. The gentleman who helped me was extremely nice and we chatted about a variety of topics during my several hour stay. Eventually the owner came in from his Mesa store and he was very nice as well. I do understand how someone could have a bad experience in a store like this. It looks like a basic used book store but it's more of a collectors store. When I pulled up in my rental car I knocked over their sandwich board parking sign that was very close to the edge of the curb. I picked it up and went into the store. The initial reaction seemed to be one of slight annoyance rather than concern but I brushed it off and proceeded to announce my interests. Within minutes they were very helpful and friendly. So that's my last piece of advice. I rarely find a bookstore without potentially grouchy staff. I'm not making excuses for this but I find the best way to diffuse this potential is to announce your interests right away. Even if it's general fiction or something very basic. If you're looking for a bargain tell them that - at least they know to steer you away from their rare books. If you want rare books you need to make sure they know that you know how to handle them - so that takes a little show of trust. I realize that this seems like a lot of work (it's not that hard, honestly) but spending time in a good used bookstore, where you can find some common ground with the staff, can be a lot of fun. I had a great time in this store. They know their stuff! read more

I was visiting Phoenix a few weeks ago and I visited this bookstore. Although they have a nice selection and the prices are fair, I had a disturbing incident with a man I assume was one of the owners. I was looking at a group of books on the shelves and there happened to be a desk nearby which I stayed away from. I continued looking and the man came running over to me and told me in a very harsh tone that the books in that area were not to be looked at. The area I was in just looked like a regular part of the store and there was nothing stating that the section was off limits. The man was so rude and so hysterical that it completely embarrassed me and made me feel like I was doing something terribly wrong. I told the man that he should rope off any areas he didn't want the customers to look at and he agreed. But I left feeling very angry and embarrassed and didn't purchase the books that I had intended to buy. read more

Thankful places like this exist in the world. Take it from a globe-trotting, dyed-in-the-wool bibliophile. This is one of the most tasteful, thorough and considerate bookshops I've ever visited. Pay 'em a visit. -JTM read more

Great selection at Scottsdale prices. On a whim I picked up a copy of Baudelaire's Fleurs Du Mal 1959 Garnier Frères. Normally, I would do some more research but I didn't bother and bought the book for $50. After getting home, I quickly found the same book online for $20+ shipping. My fault for being gullible. I understand the need to charge retail prices with overhead costs, as no store can compete with the internet, but expect 100%+ markups on some books, as was mine was. Still, I can spend hours there looking through their selection and I support local bookshops as they have a hard time today. read more

I've been in a lot of really good bookstores in Stockholm, London, Los Angeles, etc. The Book Gallery is as good as it gets for used books. The photos on Yelp really don't do the store justice. I spent 4 hours in the store and saw no more than 3/5 of what they have for sale. The owner and his staff were very pleasant and helpful, answering all my questions and helping me find books I was looking for. Their prices were very fair: the hardcover books I purchased were in great condition yet priced far lower than Amazon's prices for even the paperback versions of the same titles. Highly recommended! read more

Delightful "full" bookshop with stock of every topic you can think of and some you may not! We spent a couple of hours and could have stayed longer. Prices are a little steep but to be expected for high quality used books. Go, you won't be sorry! read more

Beautiful old and rare books for collectors or those looking for a special volume or "off the beaten path" subject. I agree the prices are high by mass market standards, but very fair for the quality and rarity of what's offered in this store. Many of the books are out of print vintage treasures you're just not going to find elsewhere in town aside from the sister Book Gallery on main street in Mesa, which is also highly recommended. Categories are extremely well thought out and the floor to ceiling wooden shelves and antique furnishings and accessories only add to the charm. read more
