Go somewhere else for your bonsai trees. I purchased a Japanese Maple from Bonsai Northwest to put in my home office. I asked multiple times if the tree would do well indoors and the person who sold me the tree assured me the tree would be fine indoors. Once at home, the tree began losing leaves almost immediately and looked dead after only two weeks. I very carefully followed all care instructions. When I called to find out what could be done the save the tree, the person who sold me the tree said "I would never say that the tree would do well indoors. That is an outdoors tree". I put the tree outside and it recovered for about a week then died completely soon after. Bonsai Northwest would not exchange for another tree or give me a refund. Do not buy from Bonsai Northwest. read more

I think in terms of bonsai stores in America, this has to get at least 4 stars, because how many shops of these trees can there really be, let alone a huge green house full of them? The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because the employee that helped me was not especially informative, although she seemed knowledgeable. Maybe it was just because she was closing the store soon, but I was hoping for some more help in picking out a tree. I went to a bonsai store in Detroit once and the employee that helped me was very passionate and talked at length about the trees, and basically everything I would need to know to make a decision and care for it. That was not my experience here but to be fair she did at least provide me with short answers to my questions. Okay, so after that lengthy story about their service, I will say that this was a very large greenhouse filled with all sorts of different bonsai, all different sizes, shapes, and types. I thought the prices were very reasonable. You could walk away with a very nice tree for around $75-100, but they have marvelous trees for much more, but also smaller, but still adorable, more affordable trees. They carry all of the supplies you need and offer lessons as well. I will try to see what else is in the area as far as bonsai, but am pretty sure I'll be going back in few months for another tree, depending on if I can care for this one properly or not! read more

HUGE selection of pots in all sizes, shapes and colors. The largest I've ever seen. Everything from expensive hallmarked to cheaper mass produced. All types of rocks, indoor and outdoor plants, wire, screen, tools and classes. The owner even let me rummage through a box of rocks under a bench. He was patient answering questions and didn't seem annoyed at all. The prices are great on everything, even older trained bonsai. The types of bonsai to choose from is wonderful- not just the usual juniper, ficus, and azelea. Definitely worth the trip even if you're a beginner. You'll probably be there for a couple hours. read more

Bonsai ! Cool. I forgot how much I liked these little trees. They make you feel really big ! There is something about them that relaxes you. I was feeling really annoyed by just about everyone I saw for the past few days. Then I drove all the way down to Tukwila to look into little trees for a wedding gift. The growers were milling about watering and shaping trees and left me to my business, which was a needed respite from the over-attendant attendants at regular stores. It took a while wandering through the store like a lumbering giant to finaly pick out a good spiral shaped japanese juniper. My mood was further mollified by a calico cat and spotted dog that had passed out together in the sunshine at that other plant store on Ballard. Even I had to admit that was cute. And I dont even use the word "cute" ! read more

what a great pace to come to. John is very nice and will answer most beginner questions with an amazing amount of patience. I have taken several classes from Bonsai Northwest am still learning more, after trying it on my own for about 15 years and reading many books. I have purchased many pots and plants from John and will continue doing so. I love Bonsai Northwest. I've purchased a couple of dozen trees from them- mostly seedlings, but a few large bonsai trees. Overall, their prices are quite reasonable, some even lower than what you'll find online and they have a very impressive selection of tree specimens ranging in price from less than $100 to several thousand dollars. They also have a very large selection of pots ranging from inexpensive mass-production Chinese, to hand-made high end Japanese pots. My only criticism of their pot selection is, they tend to not have the accompanying humidity tray. I live in a very dry climate on the east side of the state, so trays are important for my trees. The staff have always been helpful and happy to offer advice. I am so pleased with Bonsai Northwest, when I need to make a purchase, I check with them first because I want their business to succeed and am willing to spend a bit more for the same product in an effort to help sustain their business. They represent, by far, the best bonsai store I've discovered. If you're interested in bonsai, go see them. They have much to offer, whether you're just starting in the hobby or a seasoned veteran. read more

Bonsai Northwest is a small business run by a mother/son team of bonsai enthusiasts with years of experience training and caring for bonsai. You won't find a better bonsai store and nursery in the Puget Sound area. Nobody even comes close. The space itself is a fairly large indoor and outdoor nursery containing hundreds of bonsai trees on display including the usual conifers and deciduous varieties. Junipers are the most common, but they have pines, maples and others. I have seen a few ficus, but they don't really carry tropicals. Makes sense given that the Pacifc Northwest is not accommodating to tropicals most months of the year. Bonsai Northwest also carries supplies such as bonsai potting soil, wires, tools and pots. If you need something bonsai, chances are they have it. I agree with other reviewers: the prices for off-the-shelf trees are reasonable and you could get a very nice tree for less than a $100. This brings me to classes. If you love bonsais or are just interested in maybe learning more about them or even starting to train your own tree, Bonsai Northwest's classes are an excellent introduction. I recommend reading a few books before the class, so you'll have a sense of the different styles and techniques. It'll make the class more rewarding. You could also check out the Puget Sound Bonsai Association, which is a Seattle-based bonsai club dedicated to bonsai education. I don't recommend buying a tree anywhere unless you are willing to invest a bit of energy learning about bonsai tree care and training techniques. Most trees are quite hardy, but neglect could kill a tree. So could over-watering . Bonsai has a bad reputation for being unforgiving. They do require some long-term care such as appropriate watering, timely pruning and fertilizing and repotting every two years. But, anyone can learn. Finally, John and Sharon know their stuff and they are usually happy to help you with a question or give you advice regarding your tree. read more

Unless you have a crystal ball, and can foresee your future, don't outlay any $$ here for a class. My husband bought 2 spots in a Saturday bonsai class for my daughter and I for my Mother's Day gift. The cost for both was about $250. For this price, you were each to get your unshaped tree, pot, dirt, maybe wire, and use of their tools during the class, as well as instruction in basic bonsai techniques. All he came home with was an old-style skinny cash register receipt, stapled to a piece of paper with a lady's name and the business phone # handwritten on it. Hubby was told to tell us to call if the class time didn't work out, and we could get in another one. This was purchased from a woman working there late in April 2016. On the Wednesday night before the class, my mother suffered a cardiac emergency requiring hospitalization. My daughter and I got a quick flight to Texas from Seattle early on Thursday morning, instructing my husband to call and see when we could postpone our class. Surprisingly, the person who answered, (a man, I'm assuming the owner) told him there were no refunds, the best we could do was to get our "materials". Clearly, this man has very little business acumen. When people take up bonsai, it is usually for a lifetime. I fully expected to pay anywhere from 10-25% fee to postpone and register for another class time. How much more business-savvy (and just basically kind, given the circumstances!) would it have been for this man to have taken a fee, and made a few bucks for nothing, and let us take the class in the future? He would have had two potentially life-long customers. Now, sadly, he has made multiple disgruntled customers, two bonsai hobbyists who will gladly patronize his competitors from now on, who will share their experience with other bonsai people, AND a bad Yelp review. Also, as mentioned by another reviewer, we drove all the way there from Buckley, during posted business hours, to find the place deserted, but this was over a year ago. My advice is to call first to see if anyone is there unless you live close by, AND get their policies in writing BEFORE you pay. . read more

If your into Bonsai then you have already been here. Its a quaint little Bonsai nursery and supply store just off of I-5 by the airport. They sell many different kinds of indoor and outdoor Bonsai. They stock all the supplies that you would need, and even offer classes. Go when you have extra time I always seem to get kinda lost in looking at everything. Cool little place to check out even if you dont intend to buy anything. Its also the only full service Bonsai nursery in the Seattle area. read more

I LOVE this place! These little trees are super cool and make great gifts. I also bought a class as a gift and that was well received. They have all the supplies and the people are super nice. I tend to get lost and time stands still as I meander up and down the aisles. The posted hours are 11-4 Sundays, closed Mondays and Tuesdays, and open 10-5 on Wed.-Sat. I've been here many times and have never found them closed, but that's probably because I read the hours sign and don't come when they're closed. I've met the owner and he's a pretty nice guy and very knowledgeable. This is the largest bonsai store I've ever seen. read more

I suspect the owners/management consider this a hobby, not a profession. Twice I have tried to go to the store during posted business hours and found the doors locked. I lingered in the lot for 15 minutes, thinking maybe it was a temporary bathroom/coffee break, but alas, no one returned to run the business. If the hours are optional, they should post/advertise it. I've passed this place a few times wondering what it was all about. My boyfriend is a fan of bonsai trees, so one day him and I decided to check it out. The selection of trees are pretty good. Most of the trees were presented nice, and the layout of the place made it easy to walk through. There was one bonsai tree that caught our attention, which was the Japanese Red Maple, we asked how much it was and if it was available. The owner snickered at us, didn't seem like she wanted to help and answered with, "A lot.". We then politely asked her how much was a lot, and she said, "HA, it's $475". We had other questions, but she didn't seem to care. There was another couple in the nursery who were white, that was treated much better. I don't know, but the owner made it seem to my eyes that she may have been some what prejudice or even racist. I was pretty much done with the place since the owner's comment about the price of the tree annoyed me. Great selection, but 2 stars for poor service and attitude. read more

Exceeded expectations! It has a great location but it was far enough that it took a few months to schedule the trek. They even stayed open a little late on a beautiful Friday so our 12 yo could pick out his birthday present. Very knowledgeable staff. Not pretentious with a beginner. It was fun walking around.
