This place was truly special. It is a family run business that smokes all its meat on site. The decor was eclectic and appeared to be in progress. Based in an old hardware store, the ambiance is rather unique. The menu has a wide variety and many appetizers. We chose the handmade chips. The amount was huge.! My son got the Mac and cheese dish with bacon, goat cheese sprinkles and fresh jalapeños. It also comes with diced tomatoes which he declined. I had a chopped brisket sandwich with smoked beans and collard greens. Everything was very tasty. The servings of sides were small but I had no room left to order dessert. Stopped in for some southern Virginia BBQ after about 8 hrs in the car on the way to TN. Came in to the smell of wonderful BBQ wood smoke and got seated right away. The service was a bit slow because I believe there were a few call outs and a large party sitting behind the stage. The hostess quickly became a waitress and was very apologetic about the length of time we waited to order, for drinks, and for food. Food was welllllll worth the wait. Excellent smoke profile and generous portions. The kids meals were the size of small entree in New England. 4 meat platter with two sides was enough to split between 2 adults. Good selection of local beers on tap in all abvs and styles. Live music was great. Not too loud and added a cool vibe to a great meal. Came here for dinner as had read about how popular their ribs were amongst diners. This is a very casual setting with tables and bar seating. Can order from the full menu at the bar, too. Tried the ribs, pulled chicken, Brisket, and pulled pork. The ribs and Brisket were the best out of all the meats. They come dry so you can dip into their house sauce or a sauce of your choice. The ribs were so good they didn't need any sauce. Yum! The chicken was a but dry and can easily be skipped. Pulled Pork was okay, but I've had better. The sides chosen were collards, Smoked beans, and cornbread. The collards were very bland needed salt. Beans and cornbread were both very good. I wanted to love this place, but I don't. I had a craving for good bbq, so I had in my mind all day long that we'd give this place a try. When we arrived, it was more of a hole in the wall than I imagined. There was no signage, we only knew we were there because of GPS. Nope, bring me sweet tea instead! I could deal with bottled but not warm! I ordered the fried green tomatoes as my appetizer and they were delicious! Wow. This place left us speechless!!!!! We came here just passing through the town on our journey from PA to KY. Insanely happy we found this gem. First of all - our server/the bartender Jon (Joe Nathan lol) was awesome. Insanely knowledgeable on the beer & food choices and gave amazing recommendations that were super helpful to us! He really knows his stuff (give him a raise). And the food. Absolutely. Amazing. My bf got the full rack of ribs (didn't finish them lol) and I got the brisket. Hands down the BEST brisket I've ever had. Fell right apart & the flavor was just out of this world. The ribs were amazing. The sides were great too - highly recommend the potato salad! We had visited this place prior to the Pandemic and were so happy to find a fun bar with great bbq. We ordered Vienna Lager by Devil's Backbone Brewing and onion rings as an appetizer. The onion rings were plentiful and very good. I asked for bbq sauce for dipping. The sauce was a vinegar based red...really good! We ordered the Hill Billy Philly and split it. This sandwich has brisket, onions, peppers and Gouda cheese. The cheese taste was not as present as we would have liked, but you could tell it was there. We had two sides, cornbread fritters and baked beans. The beans were pretty dry, but I added the rest of my bbq sauce to loosen them up. The cornbread fritter was really good. Some further training for the waitress is probably needed. A bit slow, and did not notice when we needed another beer. We will be back next time we are in town! read more

Tasty meat, sides were just so-so, and wildly varying service. I stopped in on a rainy Friday afternoon, when the place was almost empty, and the server on the floor sat me at the bar promptly, with a smile. They had quite a few interesting looking beers, but the bartender, who was apparently new, couldn't sell me a half-pint (as opposed to a full pint), and took quite awhile to get my order. After that, she was pretty absent, and it took forever to get my bill while she chatted with her buddy and made her a mixed drink. Based on the quality of the Cubano, I'd avoid the rest of the specialty sandwiches and stick to the BBQ standards. The pork was great, but the roll was pretty meh, and it didn't taste of even a nod to a Cuban sandwich. I wasn't expecting authenticity, just something tasty, and I was a bit disappointed. The mac and cheese used cavatappi (yay, although not exactly an innovation at this point), but the cheese sauce was just middle-of-the-road. I've had better BBQ sides of mac and cheese, and certainly had better mac and cheese at restaurants. The potato salad was similarly disappointing. On the other hand, this looked like a great place to see a band and grab a beer. I just wouldn't bother to make the mile or so trip from I-81 to here for a late lunch. read more

Made the drive from Bristol TN to Abingdon to try out some BBQ for lunch at Bone Fire Smokehouse. Ordered 1/2 rack of ribs with baked beans, coleslaw and a piece of cornbread. Partner had a salad with onion rings and pulled pork on top. Also tried a couple of cornbread fritters. Everything we had was delicious!!! The prices are very reasonable for the amount of food we had. Also spoke with the owner Doug. Really nice guy who gave us a little background on the restaurant. We sat at the bar and Melissa waited on us. She was great. We will be back for dinner and drinks some night soon. Absolutely recommend this place for anyone looking for really good BBQ! read more

Decided to give this gem a try and so glad we did. We arrived around 6:15 and were seated within a couple minutes. The atmosphere is casual and if you appreciate the history (age) of a building you will love this place. The floors are the original floors and the wood in the bar area takes you back to another era. Our server was Priscilla and she was phenomenal. Very personable and we enjoyed getting to know her. She took good care of us even after they got busy. She offered many suggestions since we were from out of town. The hubs and I ordered the two meat dinner to share which for us included the pulled chicken and chicken wings with two sides (collards and beans). All of it was delicious. The only suggestion for our whole visit which is a matter of prefence is to warm the cornbread that comes with the meal. We also tried the grit cakes which was yummy to our tummies so much so we got some to go for breakfast! Our friends got the three meat platter which for them included the brisket, ribs and pulled chicken with corn fritters and homemade chips. They said it was all awesome! We went for dinner last week, based on the reviews. They were woefully under staffed. Three servers and 1 bartender tried to keep order, but failed. Tables were not bussed, the line to eat was 20ish. We waited 30 minutes to be seated and an hour to order and get the food. Meanwhile, people who had to make a near by play, were either leaving without getting their food or getting it to go. When we talked to the manager, he acknowledged the shortage of cooks, and servers. It is a popular place, but won't be for long with the service. The menu is inviting, but the food was just okay. We had the bbq Cubans, that came cold, and didn't have the components of a Cuban - pickles, mustard, all pressed. All in all, don't go until they solve the staffing and kitchen problems. 1 star read more

Just happen to drive up on the place. It's a great old building with some real charm. It was a great break from the world of chain restaurants. The staff was extremely friendly with great tasting food. I had the pulled pork and my daughter had a half a rack of ribs which half a rack of ribs here is pretty close to a full rack many other places. I am an absolute barbecue FIEND! So imagine my delight when my colleague and I stumbled upon this gem in the cutest part of town on our last night of a work trip in Abingdon. From what I could tell, this was a cute little place and I was excited to give it a try. *deep sigh* I was very disappointed. I know next nothing of the social scene in Abingdon, but I thought it odd how dead the place was for a Thursday evening dinner in (what seemed like) the heart of town. After placing my order (rib sandwich with mac and cheese and banana pudding) I was delighted to learn there was a sauce station offering options of (I believe 4) sauces of varying flavors. None of them tickled my fancy but I went for one of the mild ones. I learned the rib sandwich was pulled rib meat when I placed my order which was odd to me, but I figured I'm trying new things. I don't make their menu or their food nbd. It was nearly flavorless. The lackluster sauce was the glue holding it together. I couldn't even eat my mac n cheese. It was very no bueno. The banana pudding was a hard pass as well. There was a guy toward the end of the bar playing live tunes on a guitar there to keep my spirits up and the cheerful laughs of another party nearby. But besides that, the food was not doing the trick. I must mention there is a 3% surcharge for using cards to pay that I wasn't made aware of that I would've appreciated knowing ahead of time. Similarly, refills on my shirley temple weren't free and I learned that on the backend too. I didn't see the waitress as often as I would have liked to. However, if I was serving someone the food she was serving me, I wouldn't have the heart to look them in the eyes much either, so I'll cut her some slack. read more

A new fav for southwest Virginia BBQ. Located in the heart of the local historic district, you like the place as soon as you walk in--great back bar with local brews on the right, dining area on the left--sorta a classic early 20th century roadhouse vibe. We went for the pork platter and turkey platters. Both meats were smoked expertly--great flavor yet tender not tough. An added bonus is the BBQ bar--5 different types of sauces to choose from mild to sorta hot. I tried three with my pulled pork--all good. I loved this feature. We both loved the sides--at so many good BBQ places the sides can be quickly forgotten. Not here. Mac and Che's and broccoli--solid but then the Grits Cake and the jalapeño corn cakes--major surprises and great. You have to love anyplace that has Grits Cakes as a side. We had a short wait to be seated, but it wasn't too bad. My wife had the wings and greens combo and I had the brisket with sides of greens and banana pudding. They bbq their meats without any sauce; they let you put your own sauce on it. The wings and brisket were delicious and we did not use any sauce. The only thing that I have to complain about is that they sweeten their greens and their cornbread. (We ate them all anyways. ) The banana pudding was just alright. One and a half hours from the time we walked in until food arrived. There was only 1 other table in the place with customers so our waitress Salena wasn't slammed by any means. After over an hour wait she comes back to tell us that she has nothing we ordered. We ask for another menu to reorder, she stomps off with an attitude she finally brings one, then disappears again. Not filling tea glasses or coffe cup... When she comes back to take our reorder she tells us they do in fact have bacon for their BLT, we ask how long it will take and she says it's literally going to the window now. 15 minutes later our food arrives (cold). She leaves the ticket for the wrong table on our table and then gets attitude when I asked for the correct one and says ordinarily I would give a discount for the wait but y'all were rude from the time you walked in... we were not rude at all up until that point!
