I finally made it to Bonchon and I can't believe it took me this long. The chicken tenders are next level--perfectly crispy, juicy, and that soy garlic sauce? I'm officially obsessed. It's the kind of flavor that keeps you coming back... which explains why I've been here three days in a row And the Bao buns?? Easily one of my favorite things on the menu. The staff is super welcoming and actually takes the time to walk you through everything, which I always appreciate. I've visited the Hilltop Bonchon a handful of times since it opened in November 2022 and the vibe is laid back, laid back to the point where, as a customer, you may find yourself checking your watch multiple times. One thing this location has going for it over the Norfolk Bonchon is that parking is readily available. When I originally pulled up, there was such ample parking that I felt like taking up 2 or 3 spots. You don't have to worry about parking at all - something I have to account for whenever I'd visit downtown Norfolk. Upon entering, their venue is roomy. The bar alone looks bigger than the entirety of the Norfolk Bonchon (not really, but Norfolk is small) and there are plenty of tables, seats and TVs. Based on the setup, this would be an ideal place to watch a game while eating some fantastic fried chicken. Service is maybe this Bonchon's biggest hurdle. The quality of service, based on my experience, has been hit and miss. Often times, the most you'll be doing is waiting as I've experienced employees who are new, don't move with any urgency, and/or simply don't listen. During one visit, our server was still in training when they decided to let her help us by herself. That resulted in us receiving incorrect orders, and something as simple as refills went unfulfilled for long periods of time. When her trainer took over, things went more smoothly, but the damage was done. To balance that out, I dined by myself one Sunday afternoon and there was only 1 server on the floor. That server was on top of things - he knew the menu, offered and explained the menu, and helped me throughout, even hooking up silent refills. That was an excellent experience, good enough to keep this Bonchon within my Hilltop rotation. Combined with 1 or 2 solid visits, this Bonchon is overall good to go. I will still stick with the notion that service is inconsistent, but at the same time I haven't seen a single employee twice (meaning turnover here is high). Final note - it's never been busy during any of my visits, so I don't know how well they're doing here. First time for this newer location in the Hilltop Shoppes of VB for a late lunch. Plenty of surface parking is available and no debris in sight. Signage is in front and rear. A hostess greeted me for a weekday lunch and provided a menu. The $10.99 special was a draw to have me try them out. I was seated in a booth and drink order was taken. The dining room is quite large and was clean. A bar is available can seat around ten. I also utilized the men's room which was overall good with minor debris on the floor. They were not busy. My waitress brought water and I immediately ordered the lunch special which consisted of three chicken legs, fries and a churro. The timing was around 20 minutes, not bad. My drummies were huge and hot! Fries were were adequate quality and churro a smaller taste. The drumsticks were the hero and was the value of the lunch. Everything else was pretty good. My waitress followed up and I got a water refill and requested more napkins. A check was dropped off when finished and processed quickly. The value was obviously awesome! My first impression of this place was it looks clean and brand new. I do love the four arcade games in the waiting area. Even when I go there to with my bf who was here during 2020 it was closed at the time. when they were opening one here in Virginia Beach I came here and got the bulgogi bibimbap and lunch soy garlic wings and season fries and as well as a drink to go. I think having the quinoa was ok. the beef bulgogi was very nice and marinated. The rice was good rest of the veggies were good. I don't think I ever had mushrooms in bibimbap but I also thought it was nice. The soy garlic wings I haven't had them since 2011 so I thought the soy garlic flavor wasn't as good as back than although it is still crispy and good. The season fries were good. The pickled radish came with the lunch menu. Pickled radish is refreshing. The service was helpful, very nice and friendly. The place just opened at 11am so it was just me in there and so it was pretty clean and big and spacious. Offered me to give me a free drink while waiting but i ask if they had a to go large drink cup, but didn't have one so I bought a bottle drink. I would recommend it to others. read more

I picked up an order to go and this was the 1st time I was in this location in Hilltop. It's in a shopping center so there is plenty of parking. I was very surprised at the inside. I thought it would be smaller....more take out. But they had a FULL BAR!!! And Happy Hour!!!! Whaaatttt????? Plenty of seating at the bar and also dining room tables. They even had video games for the "kids." We got food for our office which included Potstickers, Fried Rice and Wings.....Soy Garlic and Spicy. The order was ready to go. Food was delicious. Hot and fresh. We scarfed it down. We love the potstickers. The spicy wings have a nice kick that I liked but not those that don't like spicy. Years ago I'd occasionally make the long drive to Norfolk to get my BONCHON fix. There really is no substitute. I have not found an equivalent soy garlic chicken anywhere. After a very long wait, BONCHON finally arrived in Virginia Beach. Shortly after the opening I was able to have a nice chat with the owner that left me excited for for future visits. I've found all of the staff ton be very friendly and very helpful when needed. I'm a fan of the soy garlic sauce and wish I could choose to add it to anything. We had a very disappointing experience the other night. I ordered a small 8 count wing with the beef bulgogi bibimbap. These two items totaled a little over $30 which is pretty typical for two entrees. To my understanding, the wings are double fried and supposed to be very crunchy but what we got we're super, super dry. You can see in the pictures how dehydrated and small they are. The beef bulgogi was delicious but the sides that come in the bibimbap were disappointing. The quinoa was undercooked and crunchy. The veggie sides tasted wilted and bland. Not sure if I would take the drive all the way back to Hilltop to try again just for this. I know they have lots of interesting options like bulgogi fries buuut I was disappointed by the super dry and small chicken wings, which should've been the star of the show. read more

I have come a few times. I don't like everything I have tried. The fries are not the style I like but the zucchini fries are fantastic. I do not like the boneless chicken wings. They were so small they looked like a chicken nugget. But I absolutely love the chicken drumsticks. For Yelp's celbration for Asian Pacific Islander Heritage Month, Sophia and I made the trip from Newport News to here to meet up with some friends. This Bonchon location opened up earlier in the year and Yelp Elites held an event which was very successful. Inside, it is very clean and spacious if you want to bring a group. And we were seated immediately once we walked in. Would this be a trip worth taking for yours truly? Once we all got seated, we went right to ordering. I selected as part of the $5 deal chicken drumsticks in soy glaze with a side of seasoned garlic and parmesan fries. I gotta say this is the best deal Yelp has to offer as part of APIHM. The drumsticks came out fried and hot. With every bite, you can hear the crunch. Sophia said she preferred more glaze on the chicken, but I thought it was enough for me. The fries were nicely cooked, but the only slight negative I have is I couldn't taste enough parmesean cheese. Nonetheless, the meal was really good. Sophia enjoyed hers and the rest of the group enjoy their meals as well. You couldn't ask for more here. Very good food, great service, great company. I've tried the Bonchon on Granby Street in Norfolk and was blown away with the taste and flavor of Korean Tacos (they were delish) so when I found out they were opening a restaurant in Hilltop, we had to try it. The restaurant was very clean and I loved the open set up. We were able to sit wherever we wanted so we found a table and started to look over the menu. Originally, I was going to order the Korean Tacos but I wanted to try something different so we both decided on the Japchae, which were glass noodles served with vegetables in a soy garlic sauce. Japchae is served with ribeye but since I didn't have taste for the ribeye, I asked if they could make mine with chicken and the server stated that it was no problem. We received our meals after waiting quite some time and the food looked amazing; however, they lacked a lot of flavor. We asked for sriracha and some type of sweet sauce to spruce up the taste of the dish but it still lacked taste. The chicken in my dish was very rubbery and dry and did not taste well at all, I actually ate around the chicken because it wasn't great. Unfortunately, our meal didn't taste that good. We left very unsatisfied and wishing we would've chosen something else. The chicken wings looked good so we may try that next time but for us, we didn't enjoy the Japchae. read more

FINALLY!!! This location is finally open after seeing the sign up for a couple years and no word, it's great to finally see this open. We came grand opening day and my kiddos were super excited that it's down the street. It wasn't packed so we got a table right away. We ordered soy garlic and hot wings along with rice, radish and a couple beers. It came out pretty fast and it was hot, crispy and delicious. Perfectly paired with the cold brewskies. This location is definitely bigger than the Norfolk location, lots of tables and chairs and a nice bar area. It's in a shopping center too so plenty of parking is available. The staff was very friendly and checked on our table often. We also met the manager and owners all super friendly and accommodating. We will definitely be back and be regulars here. No other visible staff, which was fine. The bartender seated us and explained the new menu options and deals that were going on. We got the sampler because we would get to try a few things. Initially we were going to dine-in. We waited for 30 minutes for our food and it never came out. At this point, we were in a hurry because we needed to pick up our dog before the vet closed. We didn't initially tell the bartender we were in a hurry because we didn't know it would take this long. We went to the counter to pay and ask how much longer for our food. He said a few more minutes and then never came back. We were just trying to pay at this point. We waited a few minutes and then had to go so we wasted 30 minutes and didn't get any food. My wife and I came here after work for the happy hour. Happy hour is dine in only but worth it for what you get. We ordered the zucchini fries ($8), popcorn shrimp ($10), and potstickers ($8). The potstickers were half spicy, half regular. The spicy potstickers definitely have a kick to them so order at your own risk . All of the food was perfectly fried and had an amazing crunch while everything inside was fresh and cooked just right. I usually get the mix and have the best of both worlds. Prices are moderate but lunch specials are where it's at... more bang for your buck. My husband and I have tried a variety of korean fried chicken. From my mom's famous recipe, to various restaurants in the area, we finally decided to try BonChon from 757. I will say the chicken was super crispy and the service was speedy, but the larger drumsticks were a little flavorless. We decided to order a large combo with the wings and drumsticks with the soy garlic and spicy flavors. The sauce flavors are great but the chicken itself wasn't seasoned. Came here once with a friend and again recently by myself. Just like last time, the fried chicken has a great crunch to them! So much so, that I cut up my gums a little eating them, but that's how you know the crunch is real haha. I got their soy garlic flavor both times, and both times did not disappoint. My friend had gotten the spicy wings, and while he proclaims that he is a spice head, the wings got him sweating! The service is always kind and attentive, especially Kasey who served me that particular day and was super nice! Some restaurants try to copy the Korean style fried chicken and most of them fail miserably. Not this one! We ordered 24 pieces wings with (primarily) Spicy and Soy Garlic flavors. The menu offers half-half but my husband prefers spicy and I want to try the soy garlic but don't want to have 12 wings with this flavor. I am glad we went with 3/4 spicy and 1/4 soy garlic because the spicy flavor turns out to be my fave one. Don't get me wrong, the soy garlic is very yummy. However after 3 wings, I needed more flavor and some spice. In other words, I got bored with it. If you can't handle spicy, you will certainly love the soy garlic!!! Guarantee!! Tonight my family and I visited this new location and it was surprisingly not busy! We ordered the XL combo which consisted of wings as well as drum sticks in the soy garlic sauce. We also order Calamari, Popcorn Shrimp, Potstickers, Japchae, Tteokbokki and of course some Kimchi. The only negative I would have to say is the calamari was only rings and not pieces of body. It definitely seemed like a frozen bag of pre-breaded calamari was opened and went straight into the deep fryer. The Tteokbokki is definitely spicy! So be cautious! The Japchae was great! Not overly saturated with sesame seed oil. You can actually taste the beef that's in it. Our waitress was so attentive and helpful! We will definitely be back at this location!
