It's been around for about a year, and we decided to give it a try one night when we were on the way home. Since it's just a few blocks from home, we were in no hurry. Although I like to brew my own coffee, I decided to give theirs a try. It wasn't bad at all. I like the all-white inside décor because it looks so clean. There's nothing pretentious about Bake & Brew. It harkens back to a time when coffee shops were places to go to enjoy good coffee in peace. I wasn't too sure if a place like this can survive in our area, but it seems to be doing well. Everytime I pass by there's one or two customers. The crunch parmesan which dominates the sauce must be the reason. I also ordered Callos because my wife loves Spanish food. At P200, the serving seemed a mite small, but the taste was superb. It goes well with either rice or bread. Commissary Kitchen also has a wide selection of cakes with Choco Cappucino being the least expensive at P360 and Choco Bomb the one that takes the biggest bite out of one's wallet at P490. Which could be the case for TFJ Kakanin Station, if it's lucky. How far TFJ can go isn't entirely dependent on blind luck, of course. The products that the store sells will determine if the kakanin station will survive and prosper, or head for the wayside and follow countless businesses that went bankrupt. It's all in the taste. Luckily for TFJ Kakanin Station, some of their products pass the test. TFC retails such comfort foods as suman sa lihiya, sapinsapin, dinuguan and puto, biko, and maja blanca, among others. Whether all of the products are made in their kitchen or supplied by outsiders, what's important is that consumers like some or all of them enough to want to buy the local foods again and again. I've only tried their biko and suman, and I found the taste to my liking. It would be unfair to pass judgment on all of their products without testing them first. At Senyor Juan, their specialty is their suman latik, being sold in pasalubong boxes or you can dine in and have breakfast (they open at 5am! Sweet jeezuz!) or merienda. At 35/piece and generously topped with latik and niyog, it's a pretty sweet deal paired with their kapeng barako or hot tsokolate. As for the suman, it's pretty okay (and definitely photogenic) once all the toppings are there, but otherwise it's still.. you know, suman, in all its bland glory. So, if I'm not going to gush about the suman, let me gush about their really good hot tsokolate. I had to request the staff to take out the milk out of my tsokolate (I'm vegan) and replace it with water instead, and they were nice enough to accommodate. Even without the milk, the tsokolate is rich and comforting. The only drawback is that it costs a little more than a hundred pesos, which I found too pricey. Mon, their staff, is a nice, chatty, and friendly fella. He goes "Ma'am, nakita ko nga kayo kanina naglalakad sa labas, at parang naghahanap ng pagkain..." So I guess he's also very observant... HAHA.
