Took a little too long for the sushi but it's got free WiFi so that's a win. The food was good

Came back to the Clairemont location, and this place really stands out. The broth and overall ramen…read moremight honestly be the best we have in San Diego. I went with the spicy tonkotsu with pork chashu and added a chicken cutlet, and it absolutely delivered. On my first visit, there was some confusion. The staff didn't clarify that chicken chashu isn't actually a thing here, so it felt like I was just paying extra for a different version. This time around, everything made much more sense. Fair warning, my spice tolerance is high and I handled the "extra hot," but even then I would probably go with regular hot next time. The creaminess of the tonkotsu broth deserves to shine, and the heat can overpower it a bit. The chicken cutlet is a great touch. They place it right in the broth so one side stays crispy while the other soaks up all that rich flavor. Really nice contrast in texture. Looking forward to coming back again, especially to try the pork cutlet next time.

We stopped by for dinner, and ordered spicy kontasu and black sesame dandan noodle…read more The spicy kontasu had one thin slice of tonkasu and came with no eggs. The taste of broth was similar to instant noodles. And for ~$17, the amount of meat that came with it was ridiculous, almost as thin as store bought bacon. In comparison, Raki raki gave you a huge and thick slice of tonkasu, wa dining okan (a shop that does not specialize in ramen) provides 2 standard slice for ~$16 ramen. Menya Ultra's version was straight up sad. The black sesame Dan Dan noodle didn't stand out either. I did order an extra egg, because it wasn't included. The quality of the egg was interesting, that the egg white was immediately fragmented when I tried to pick it up, and the yolk did not have that half liquid half solid texture either. The food was not great, not worth the price and does not live up to the hype. I don't get why people still come here when there are many great options available in SD. On a positive note, wait was short ~18:00 on weekday. Waitress was friendly. Food came out fast. That's as much nice things as I could say about this place.

Ko did a great job with our family of 7. She is very organized and attentive. Love the decor in sky deck. Very open, and refreshing. Gratuity added for larger groups. There is also a 4% surcharge (increases in food cost and minimum wage per menu/receipt). Everything was great. We'll be back.

We were craving something warm and comforting after a long beach day, so we ordered Marufuku Ramen…read moreon Uber Eats. I've had a lot of ramen over the years and was really looking forward to this one. The good first, the ramen arrived hot, which is always a win for delivery, and the broth itself was excellent. Rich, flavorful, and exactly what you want when you're in the mood for comfort food. That part absolutely delivered. We ordered the Hakata Tonkotsu, and while the flavor was there, a few things fell a bit short. The noodles, for me, didn't feel like that elevated, restaurant-quality ramen you expect. They leaned more toward a packaged noodle texture rather than that fresh, springy bite you typically get at a higher-end ramen spot. The pork belly was also a bit surprising. Instead of those thick, melt-in-your-mouth slices you usually see, it came as two very thin pieces that honestly resembled bacon more than traditional chashu. Not bad, just not what you expect at this price point. We did ask for spice in one order, and instead of it being incorporated, it came on the side as a chili powder. That said, it actually turned out to be a nice touch since everyone could customize their heat level. Toppings overall felt a little sparse. Not a ton of sprouts or extras, and for the price, you usually expect a bit more going on in the bowl. Now, the standout surprise, the gyoza. We ordered four orders (seven per order), and they disappeared fast. Crispy, flavorful, and honestly the favorite of the night. Definitely worth adding to your order. Overall, I'd give it: ***** for flavor (the broth really carries it) *** for ingredient quality and portion/value It's still a solid option, especially if you're ordering in and want something warm and satisfying. Just not quite at the level of some of the more standout ramen spots. And don't skip the gyoza.
