Whilst on holiday in Köln we ended up here 3 times for frühstück (breakfast). Bit of an odd place…read morebut wholely enjoyable. The business is divided into two halves. The large every nice cafe where you order your coffees, teas and some patesserie and the deli next door where you order your food. They bring the food to you at the table but you pay the two bills separately. I've not experience this before and felt like a very European way to run the business. I can understand some people not liking this though as in the depths of Winter the prospect of having to go back onto the street and next door to order seems annoying. The locals obviously look at the menu and order before coming into the cafe. The cafe itself is very nice, bare bricks walls with eclectic collected furniture, ranging from couches to what look like old school chairs. High ceilings, lots of mirrors and art for sale hung on the walls makes it a pleasant spot to while away a few hours. The coffee is good although there is no middle ground, the lattes and cappucino's are very milky and the macchiato's or black coffees very bitter. I like a middle ground coffee like a Flat White which is has milk but still retains the depth of a shorter espresso, this cafe doesn't achieve this but it is something I noted through our trip so it's obviously a German preference. I had the Strammer Max one day and liked it so much had the Strammer Käse Max the second time. A very simple but tasty breakfast of bread, cold ham, dill gherkins, and fried eggs with a dill yoghurt on the side, the Käse (cheese) is the only addition to the Strammer Käse Max

So this place is probably in one of the hippest part of town, the Belgian quarter. This place is…read morenarrow and deep and looks charming. We were able to find parking right in front of the door. The crowd is generally also young and hip... my god I feel old saying these terms. But that's about the end of the positive experience we had here on Sunday morning for breakfast. The breakfast was way overpriced for what it actually included. The service was a bit forgetful (but friendly). And the tea was a disappointment. I assume their ice cream selection is better than their breakfast... So for breakfast if advice you against this place. Check out my other recommendations instead (like Römerpark). Would I go back? Only to be hip.

After dinner, I let my friend choose the place for drinks since she's the local. She took us to one…read moreof her favourite bars, Domkeller, which I'd classify as a dive bar. We dropped in on a Tuesday evening (around 9:15pm) and it was busy. There was a private event upstairs so the inside was packed. Luckily, we were able to snag a table outside beside the heaters. Nice touch with the blankets for you to use if you get cold. Only downside is lots of chain smokers but that's at most bars. There were a couple menus but we only were here for beers (€2,50 to €5,80 range). - Tannenzäpfle (€2,50 for 0,33L) - 2x Eifeler landbier (€2,50 for 0,30L) - 2x Bolten alt (€2,50 for 0,30L) Chill, laid back spot to grab a few beers with friends.

Located (as the name suggests) right near the Dom, Domkeller offers good beer (German, Belgian as well as others) in a cozy atmosphere. For me, Domkeller embodies what a bar should be--a relaxed place where you can share a drink with friends and listen to good music (at just the right level) or have a good conversation. The music played here is fantastic and is an amazing mix that just about everyone will enjoy. They also regularly have concerts--I'm sure this place gets packed for those! Although a bit pricey (our bill came to around 12 with 2 beers and a snack) I think it's a nice enough place to enjoy a drink (skip the snack).

The Witloof will let you choose your meal and will pair the appropriate beer based on your meal…read morechoices. The husband/wife duo, are super friendly and humorous folk. The cellar of common and somewhat rare Belgian beers was why I chose this place. I had beers with my meal and also bought a dozen bottles for takeaway. Perfect!

Belgian restaurant in Maastricht,…read more This place offers you Belgian grandmother's kitchen and 200 mostly Belgian beers to choose from. The best thing about it is that just like with wine, they pair the beers to the food they serve. They use Belgian quality products, Belgian blue cattle for their beef or belgian cheeses like Maredsous abbey cheese and of course belgian chocolate in their deserts. The point of the restaurant is that most of these products are sometimes unfortunately forgotten but Belgium has so much to give when it comes to fine food. The restaurant itself is rather picturesque and it has won lots of international design awards.. They use old china which adds something to the whole experience of the grandmother's dishes being served. The staff is very friendly and the owner works alongside the staff serving tables. The idea is that you'll have a 2 or 3 course menu for which a very acceptable price is charged. They have a small menu, so I'm pretty sure it's all freshly prepared a la minute. When in Maastricht make sure to put this on your list, and make reservations in advance. Thumbs up for this restaurant for showing us how amazing some of those forgotten Belgian dishes are. They also have takeaway, parking facilities near the door: ol-Vrouwen parking
