I've been coming to Bom Apetite for about 10 years, and they have consistently delivered delicious Portuguese food.....tasty, comforting meals just like vavó used to make. Many of the waiters and waitresses have been there for over 20 years, and the moment you walk in, it truly feels like home. The staff greet you warmly and are genuinely happy to see you. My family and I took a break during COVID for about three years, but when we finally returned, one of our favorite waiters,Tony,was still there. Without my husband saying a word, Tony recited his usual order perfectly. That alone tells you everything. Our go to appetizer is the grilled clams. My son, daughter, and husband always order the steak regional, I go for the bacalhau à brás, and my other daughter never skips the kale soup--with lots of bread, of course. Every dish is cooked to perfection, every single time. The restaurant is decorated with beautiful photos of Portugal. It's a simple place, but you can't beat the strong sense of Portuguese community and tradition. Portuguese food in New Bedford is second to none. This place is a great little spot, small but busy! Took about 20-30 minutes to have a seat no big deal especially on a Friday night. People have mentioned that the service is slow, it's just a busy place with 2-3 servers so no big deal at all. The food is good. Great portion sizes for why you pay for! Had the steak in the casserole dish. I didn't find it crazy spicy at all. Steak was cooked to perfection. My girlfriend got the regional steak and that sauce was packed with garlic flavor! Someone else get the filetes dourados which she really liked. A very busy family Portuguese restaurant not far from the river nestled among the textile mills. The restaurant is very clean and neat. The wait staff here is bilingual, professional and sweet as pie. They are always one step ahead of your needs. The seafood was fresh and delicious. The Portuguese pops (bread) were fresh, soft and crusty all at the same time-so good to eat with the sauces. The grilled little necks (small hard shelled clams) were smothered in butter, EVO and garlic, came out steaming, while Tony (our favorite waiter) squeezed fresh limes over the little necks. My favorite of all times. So yummy! The grilled squids had crunchy tentacles and soft but smoky bodies. Accompanied by a small salad, boiled potatoes and cebolada-so delicious. And the dish of shrimp sautéed in EVO, butter & garlic were cooked to perfection- the sauce was absorbed by the pops- the best part! Went to see what rating this place gets and my jaw dropped when I saw a 3 vs 4 star rating. The food is delicious, affordable and portioned sizes are shareable. We can on a Friday afternoon so service was a bit slow, but wow, the fish was FRESH. Highly recommend when you're in the mood for some authentic Portuguese food. read more

I ordered take out First I feel the need to mention this restaurant does not do delivery, they do not have a website, nor can you find an actual menu anywhere online. I ordered based off of pictures on their Facebook page and yelp reviews. Second the packaging was awful! The restaurant stacked my soups and appetizer (which came in a soup container) all on top of each other. This led to my entree getting crushed and the sauce leaking all over the bottom of the bag, one of the soup containers lids disintegrated and some of the soup also spilled into my entree and into the bag. With that being said the food was really good. I ordered the regional steak which is your classic portuguese steak dish with peppers, garlic, fried egg, rice and fries. What was left of the sauce was delicious, the steak was cooked perfectly and was a very tender thick steak. Both soups were also good- kale soup and chicken soup. The shrimp Mozambique was excellent with a hint of lemon to the classic Mozambique sauce. Sadly they did not include any bread which is unheard of for a portuguese place. Every portuguese person eats bread with their soup or Mozambique. I'll have to eat in the restaurant next time because someone doesn't understand how to properly stack take out dishes but the good was delicious. read more

Ignored as I walked into a near empty bar room. Proceeded to head to dining area (also near empty). Waitstaff were extremely slow and inconsistent. We would put in one or two food or drink orders.. he'd walk away and come back for the remainder of the order? Waited about 50 minutes for rare steak and prosciutto. Steak was tough. This is a great little authentic Portuguese place where actual Portuguese people go to eat. No frills, affordable, really good food. I like the cod fish dishes the most and the carne aletejana. The service is not super warm and friendly, but attentive enough. Just don't be shy. Call them over or you may end up sitting passively for a while. Great for desserts and takeout too! read more

I've been here 3 times now. Each time I've seen the same wait staff and been waited on by all 3 now. The woman is very efficient but a little quiet. One of the men is also quiet but does a good job still. The other guy is extremely outgoing and social and helpful. This is hands down better than Antonio's down the street. The foods tend to be a little heavy with salt but everything I've also tried has GREAT flavor! I also like that I don't do the fries and rice that the typical Portuguese restaurants offer, I usually ask to substitute in a vegetable. Everytime I have done it here it is nice fresh and well seasoned vegetables, not some steamed frozen mix. They also have great specials especially different fish specials. read more

Worst service I have experienced. The waiter was a nice guy, BUT.....party of 10 with a reservation, we ordered food and drinks. We received our drinks, but it took an hour to get the food and the waiter never checked on us while we were waiting....it gets better....we were given 4 menus to share, didn't get enough silverware, half the table finished their drink while we were waiting for food and couldn't reorder until dinner finally showed up. When the waiter did come he spent half a second at the table and left without hearing what we needed....just a complete disaster. Needless to say, I won't be back! read more

We came here with family (Portuguese family) and children aged 11 & 13 (one a picky eater). Despite some reviews, we found the service to be top notch. One child was unsure of a sauce, so he put it on the side. Helpful, thoughtful and speedy even on a Saturday evening. All meals were excellent - steak, calamari, chicken, fish. On Fathers Day I decided to take my parents here to Bom Apetite. It is or should I say (was) our favorite place in the city. We walk in at 630pm and are immediately greeted by a rude male waiter. He stated to my father "were closed cant you read the sign"!!! We were so embarrassed as the restaurant was about 75% full and everyone was looking at us. We leave and yes there was a sign at the door that stated they were closed, but we clearly did no see it. Maybe it was because the hours are posted until 9pm.Obvioulsy this is not the experience I was hoping for on Fathers Day, but thankfully we decided to try the Roasted Pig and they did NOT disappoint. You walk in to the restaurant side to find white tablecloths (paper) and wine glasses on the tables, then order drinks and have the 2 year old drink her apple juice out of a Coors Light beer glass (that looks great and doesn't pose a problem at all when she tries to drink by herself!- sarcasm) then when the food arrives it is cold, unbelievably dry, and a complete waste of money! We were SO disappointed and will never return to this place. I advise each of you to save your money for a place that has more pride in what it puts on your plate. read more

We came to this restaurant at the recommendation of a friend who loves Portuguese cooking. We were hesitant based on past Yelp posts, but our experience was great. Our server, Tony, took care of us from the moment we walked through the door. We ordered a traditional kale soup to start. It was not much to look at but the broth was rich and flavorful. The Chourico Bombeiro style makes an impression, it came to the table in flames. The chourico was authentic with a bit of spice that kicked in after a few bites. We had to order the Mozambique, which was delicious! I could eat a plate of the Mozambique sauce over rice and call it a day. We also got the Steak Regional with the garlic, peppers, and egg. In traditional fashion, there was more food than we could eat in one sitting but it won't go to waste. We took everything we couldn't eat home for another Portuguese meal! We didn't get dessert, this time, but next time we'll plan better! The one down fall is the wine list. By the glass they served only one red and one white, neither very good. We recommend ordering a bottle, which we did for our second glass. The half bottle was very inexpensive and much better quality. read more

I have been coming here since I was little and the food is always great. The location is ok right off of Belleville Avenue near mills located primarily in a residential area. There is some parking spots right in front of the bar but it is more of a nuisance to get out so it's much easier just parking on the street. The restaurant is split into two sections. Left side is the bar area and the right side is the dining area. This place is super outdated and the service depending on who you get aren't the friendliest at times. However the food is consistently delicious and for that I always keep coming back. They have this strange rotisserie setup that I'm pretty sure they haven't used in years and a seafood type stand which never has seafood in it. There are usually plenty of seating areas and service is usually pretty fast. The food and drink is absolutely yummy. Plenty of wines and beer to choose from and they have Sumol of course. For an appetizer I highly recommend the chourico bombeiro which is a Portuguese sausage cooked on a ceramic dish that is served to you on flames. I always get the shrimp Mozambique for an appetizer which is Portuguese style shrimp pan seared with slot of garlic and orange Sazon type sauce. It is so good. Also for a meal you cannot go wrong with the Bife Regional which is a decent sized steak with a large side of rice fries, fried egg on top and red peppers on top. So good and I can barely finish it every time I eat it. I recommend everyone to at least try it here, it is affordable but tasty. read more
