Afterward we went to Meadowbrook Farm and their pumpkins were better and less than half the price. Beyond that, a snotty girl was working at the counter slowly giving out cookies and donuts. I asked her if the apple orchard had cider and she said "no" with no other explanation. She then said "we're making more but it'll be a while". I asked how long it takes and she was super annoyed. Sighing and rolling her eyes she ran back to ask someone else. Upon her return, she told us it would be at least two hours. That was all fine, places run out of things so it was totally understandable. As we're walking out, a lady walked in and asked for cider. The girl asked her how much she needed and went into a different area to give her two bottles. I don't know if the girl that "helped" us was just rude and lazy or really didn't know they had some, but either way, a super disappointing experience. In any area filled with great family farms with similar products, you'd think they might focus a tiny bit on customer service.

As they are famous for their peaches and apples at the local farmer's market, I really wanted to see the orchard itself as well as have an in-depth chat with one of the owners, Alan, who I got to know when purchasing their amazing produce. They have a really cute farm stand with lots of pumpkins and apples around this time of the year. You also have the option on going apple picking in the orchard and see how the different apples are grown. Alan, who usually doesn't take people on a tour around the orchard, showed me around and explained all their operations throughout the year. It was really eye opening to the farming industry around this region (compared to California where it never stops). Picked up some apples and cider, enjoyed the fall colors before driving through the back route where you can see the Boston skyline from quite a distance. Definitely recommend the non-touristy experience here.

The size of the bags are odd though....I got a bag that was supposed to fit 16 and it only fit 5. Huh?? Just readjust your expectations. They also have a hayride that takes you on a tour through the orchard and he talks about the history of it. Make sure you sit near the speaker since it's hard to hear over the engine. The store was stocked with the obvious. Apple cider, apple butter, caramel apples. There's also a little food truck outside. ALL fried foods so don't expect anything healthy. Applepickung has become the thing to do in Central Massachusetts in the fall and we've been to all…read morethe places ... Honeypot Hill (overcrowded) ... Nashoba Winery (You need a ticket, or they sell out. Apples are sparse and often need to be picked off the ground as there are none on the trees) ... Red Apple Farms (Our favorite for scenery but the apples aren't great) ... Bolton Farm (climbing up a steep hill with a bag full of apples) ... etc. Tougas is billed, by them, as the number one apple picking location in the country. Given the crowds, I can see why. You'd be best off going during the week because during the weekend, it's more crowded than Disney World. They have an outdoor food court with tables ... and the food is super pricey and super mediocre. Maybe below mediocre ... my $12 cheeseburger didn't even taste like meat. It had the consistency of a brown sponge soaked in grease. The pulled pork was surprisingly tasty ... but not the fresh type of BBQ you'd expect. More like something from a container brought home from the grocery store. The drinks are also crazy expensive. $9 for a draft beer ... and they leave 1/8th of the cup empty. I paid $36 for 3 beers after tax and asked if they would actually fill the beer up all the way. The server refused saying that the owner doesn't let them because if beer spilled out during pouring from the draft, that is wasted beer. So, instead they fill it 1/8th up ... and essentially save a'phantom beer' after pouring 8 beers. Pretty shitty. Beyond that, to charge an extra $2 for a sugar rim and an extra $4 for a single (stale) cider donut as garnish ... also shitty. Everywhere else does a sugar rim on a pumpkin beer in the fall for free. I am surprised they don't charge for ketchup and mustard for the food. Cheapskates. The apple orchard itself is nice. You get a 4 minute wagon ride included with a bag of apples. Here's the kicker though ... each $36 small bag of apples includes only 3 people in the orchard. It's $10 per person for extra people!!! If you buy the larger bag for $50, you get 5 people. The small bag holds about 15 medium-sized apples. That's pretty slimy making people pay extra if they want to bring 2 parents, two kids and grandparents. The orchard itself is not as picturesque as some of the other ones. This has young grafted trees, about 9 feet tall. Not really trees but thin sapplings modified to grow tons of fruit. The good thing is you won't have much trouble getting to the top. The bad thing is it feels more like walking through apple hedges than an apple orchard with real trees. Having said that, as of the first weekend in October, there were still lots of varieties of apples and plenty on the trees. The apples do taste good ... not the best we've had but not the worst. The trees are well marked and it's fairly easy to fill a bag up and we enjoyed every variety we tried. They do a good job of controlling the crowds ... you don't have to wait for than 20 minutes for a wagon ride to the orchard. There is a big petting zoo. The food does take a long time if there are crowds. (We waited 40 minutes peak season). I will say that they need to redesign the store. At the back of the store is a counter which serves ice cream and deli sandwiches. The line stretches outside of the building and wraps around. This makes it impossible to get into the store to browse. Overall, you probably won't hate your time here ... unless you really dislike crowds. Imagine Disney on school vacation week and that's what weekends here feel like. It feels more like a theme park or fair ... It doesn't have the homey and orchard-y feel that a lot of other places do. If you want more of a traditional apple picking experience in an orchard, I'd stay with some of the smaller spots in the area. If you want more scenery and foliage, Nashoba is your best bet. If you want a full day experience with a pumpkin patch, apple picking, wagon rides, food court, petting zoo, etc. this is crowded but some people might like that feel. Also, they have the best variety and don't run out as soon as smaller orchards due to the size of the property. Just make sure you save your money ... a bag of apples, lunch and a drink or two will set you back $200+.

We came for the corn maze and pumpkins, and were not disappointed. Ambiance: Loved it. The scenery was beautiful and there weren't too many activities other than the corn maze, pumpkin patch, a corn-launcher, shetland pony, and some llamas & goats. The drive there was gorgeous, especially just down the road where you get a view all the way to Boston. I loved the winding, shaded country roads up to the farm. Corn Maze: The maze was great. Very challenging if you try to not use the map. Even a bit challenging with the map. Four acres, so it's big, but not too big. Pumpkins: The pumpkin patch was just on the other side of the corn maze, and there were plenty of pumpkins to choose from, both small and large. Unfortunately the wet weather was causing some to rot on the vine, but many were still in good shape. Service: Everyone was very friendly, and it wasn't very busy when we were there (3:45 pm to 5pm). The maze cost $10 for adults, and pumpkins were only $0.50/lb. Seriously, $8 for three pumpkins? Whooo! They also had a few food items, including hot dogs. I'd definitely recommend this place, even without the apples. Can't wait to go back next year when there are apples.
