Road trip to North Carolina to the famed Tail of the Dragon. What do I notice driving thru Tennessee? For some reason I remembered back in the day a music duo at an old BBQ place in Driftwood, Texas that covered Mr. Bojangles circa 1970. My memory was from the late 80's or early 90's. The town we eventually settled in did have much in the way of viable cuisine. Plus, our first night was in New Orleans and we went wild for my birthday. So, couple of cheap meals to keep the trip budget in check. Friends and I decided to head back to Murphy, NC to check out the local antiques scene, grab some needed supplies from Walmart. Tried my first Cheerwine! After hitting the cute downtown scene; headed to Bojangles for their alleged 100 step biscuit making process. Might be stretching that last statement; but this key bread element dwarfs almost every chicky competitor out there. Eat your heart out Popeye's. We dined in which was nice; super friendly folks at the counter. We all ordered and sat down to tally the observations. The individual biscuit ordered stuffed with pimento cheese was something you can barely find in Texas (and friggin' amazing). I found the two meat white (breast, wing) lacking in the skin crunch category. So, I went back to the other plain biscuit and applied honey. Well, this was clearly a one bread race which this place OWNED. Friends at the table ordered the chicken sandwich; chicken strip plate. GF ordered her fave 3 wing plate. Sides were interesting. I mean, how is it Cajun pintos when the rest of the known south swears it's missing white rice? Dirty rice looked more like Chinese fried rice; mashed taters with brown gravy that put KFCs offering to shame. Green beans start out of a can and get some minor upgrades and were flavorful compared to local spots in Texas. In truth, Bojangles gets more stars for the biscuit and pimento cheese!

Good thing, too. We were about to try a few things that she steered us clear of. We ended up ordering: Cheesy bagel with cream cheese Everything bagel Chocolate croissant Ham and cheese danish Pumpkin chocolate almond croissant 2 iced coffees Some notes: -She heated up all of the items for us, which was tasty and delicious. -Coffee was good. Oat milk or half and half were available. -No plastic knives for the cream cheese. We used wooden coffee stirrers which was fine but clumsy to navigate. -Not sure why reviews are so bad for bagels because they were fluffy with just the right amount of chew (close to NY style). I will say that after it being toasted, the bagel was not soft enough the day after to eat. But day-of, it was great. -Small seating area typical of little cafes. A few outdoor tables as well. -Very friendly service. Accommodating and welcoming to our child circus -the cheesy bagel isn't the typical Asiago most places carry, but an actual cheddar blend. Yummy.

The U-pick apple experience was a blast, and the orchard is beautiful, well organized, and family-friendly. We spent hours here between picking apples, browsing the market, and sampling drinks. There is an incredible selection of local products, baked goods, jams, cider, wine, fresh produce, gifts, and souvenirs. Everything looked fresh and high quality, although many of the items are definitely on the pricey side. We also tried both the hard cider and wine flights, which were reasonably priced and a fun way to sample several of their offerings before deciding what to take home. Most of the staff we encountered were friendly and welcoming, and despite the crowds, the overall operation ran smoothly. Unfortunately, what should have been a five-star experience was overshadowed by one concerning incident. After returning from the U-pick orchard on the tractor, we noticed a family parked a couple of spaces away from us. The adults removed a younger child from the vehicle, and it appeared there may have been another child, approximately four years old, still inside the parked vehicle. We fully recognize the seriousness of making that assumption and cannot say with certainty what the circumstances were. However, with temperatures well above 90 degrees, we felt it was far better to report what we observed than ignore a situation that could potentially put a child at risk. What disappointed us most was the response. We informed staff of our concern, yet there seemed to be little to no sense of urgency. Even if it ultimately turned out to be a misunderstanding, I would have expected someone to immediately check on the situation or at least acknowledge the concern and verify that the child was safe. When it comes to a potential child safety issue, I'd much rather see staff respond quickly to a false alarm than risk overlooking a genuine emergency. Despite that experience, Mercier Orchards is still a wonderful destination. The U-pick experience, shopping, cider and wine tastings, and overall atmosphere make it a place I'd recommend to anyone visiting the Blue Ridge area. My hope is simply that management reinforces the importance of treating potential safety concerns with the urgency they deserve. Had it not been for that interaction, this easily would have been a five-star review.
