I called another school before deciding on Demaira dance studio and the woman said their Summer beginner dance class was full. When I called here Ms. Kathy said I could do the drop in class and see if it was a "good fit" for my daughter. I LOVE and appreciate the flexibility of "drop-in" classes because with toddlers you don't want to commit because it may not work out. I had not purchased tap shoes for my daughter and Ms. Kathy was nice enough to let my daughter borrow and keep a small pair of tap shoes. So we "dropped-in" and my 3 1/2 year old who is shy to try new things gave this class a chance. It always takes her a few minutes to warm up but Ms. Kathy does have the "magic touch". Ms. Kathy does a combination beginner class for 3 and 4 year olds. The class starts off with 20 minutes of tap then 20 minutes of ballet and finally 20 minutes of tumbling. I LOVE that this class teaches a variety of dance styles, something I have not found anywhere else. I really needed to write this review because my daughter did take some ballet classes in the past in Chicago at a popular school on Southport and although the teachers were sweet they could not get her to participate for the full class. Ms. Kathy incorporates the different dance styles and makes the class fun for the girls. Ms. Kathy has been consistently friendly and my daughter has learned to look forward to going to Demaira Dance Studio. I really just want to thank you for your patience and consistency, Ms. Kathy! She began pre-ballet classes when she was three and now she is four and in the tap and ballet class. There is always more than one teacher and in the afternoon classes we had three teachers (which was great). The recital did not require overpriced costumes and it was broken into different age groups (3 recitals rather than one super long recital). We have had a very positive experience at this dance studio. Honestly any sport or activity before the age of four can be challenging for everyone and Miss Robin works hard to help the children and parents.

This is not the place for little ones!…read more My 2 1/2 year old was in the pre-ballet summer session and on the first day she started to cry when I left the room and was trying to leave. So, I brought her back to the circle and sat down with her. Ms. Robin yelled across the studio that I couldn't sit there and this is not a mommy and me class. She said I should let her cry and leave the room. However, every time I tried my daughter followed me and was able to open the door to come out. The teachers made zero effort to engage her or keep her in the studio. At that point Ms. Robin said I could sit in the corner with her and observe quietly. We sat and watched and still the teachers made no effort to include her in the class. They acted as if we were not there. After class Ms. Robin said not to worry and that some times it can take a whole session for them to get used to the class. The 2nd week it was more of the same. My daughter didn't want to participate and didn't want me to leave so we again watched from the side and were completely ignored by the teachers. Later that night Ms. Robin sent me an email saying that we can come to one more class but if my daughter cannot separate and stay in the class on her own we can't come to class and she will give me a partial refund. Never in my life have a heard of a 2 year old being kicked out of any recreational activity b/c of separation anxiety!

The studio has a wide range of classes and several performances throughout the year. My friends and family always love the shows-- so many different dance styles, so many ages dancing (including adults like me), and never a 3-hour marathon. And Diane always keeps it fresh with new artistic concepts for each show. We especially like that the studio teaches students how to choreograph so they can explore and be creative. Not to mention there is open enrollment throughout the year for a very affordable price. There are many different events throughout the year such as Halloween parties, Christmas parties, a parade, and a few holiday performances followed by the big spring recital at the end of the year. My daughter wasn't able to perform in the holiday shows because I enrolled her right beforehand but we're looking forward to enjoying a full year of dance here in 2019! The highlight of my daughter's week is attending hip hop/ballet class, she can never wait to go back!

Beautiful sound system, high ceilings, ideal floor for barefoot dance. I didn't see a changing space and it was much too hot for the people in our class (mostly 50 year old women) as it looked like the space is kept at 76 degrees for the benefit of the folks who usually take dance class there. That makes sense that you would need to keep students warm; however, for our crew, it was just too hot and I had to keep taking breaks to cool off. Parking was very limited and confusing, and I accidentally parked in a non-approved spot; however, thankfully, was not towed in the hour I was in the building. I think I'd rent out to space myself for a birthday dance, if there was a way to lower the temperature to 68 degrees for the hour we were using the space.

Both of us being 90's kids, we had no idea about swing dancing or dancing in any way that would look elegant or graceful. The process was easy, we met, she gave us a free first lesson, we gave her the songs we wanted to dance to, a time frame, and we worked out all the moves and steps together. She takes her time to show you each and every step, which way to move, how to look, how to smile, and most importantly, how to enjoy it and have fun with it all. It really showed when we performed for our guests. If it wasn't for her, our first dance would have been about exciting as that last slow dance at your high school prom. She gives you very intimate lessons. There was no one else around except us and her, so if your two left feet are feeling shy, you have nothing to worry about. She is very professional and will make sure before you leave that you understand what you are doing. She even gave us a lesson plan for practice, since we only met once a week.
