Five Stars for Off the Wagon -- One of the Most Fun Nights I've Had!…read more
I've visited quite a few dueling piano bars, and Off the Wagon in downtown Asheville stands out as one of the most entertaining, spontaneous, and memorable experiences I've had!
I visited twice during my Asheville vacation, and what impressed me most was the musicians' willingness to take chances with unusual song requests. These performers don't simply stick to a predictable playlist. They embrace the unexpected, experiment with unfamiliar songs, and make the audience part of the entertainment.
I particularly enjoy challenging musicians with eclectic requests, and Off the Wagon was absolutely up to the challenge! My selections included The Who's "Pinball Wizard," ZZ Top's "Sharp Dressed Man" and "Tush," Weird Al Yankovic's "Another One Rides the Bus," and the wonderfully outrageous "Boogie Till You Puke." One musician had never even heard the latter song, but gave it a try anyway, and the audience loved it!
Another feature I appreciated was the electronic song-request system. Requests are submitted through an app and displayed on the wall, with tips determining their priority. It's a fun, interactive approach that allows everyone to participate and see which songs are coming up.
One Monday evening, I arrived when the place was nearly empty. Over the course of the night, the crowd grew, the energy increased, and by nearly 2 AM the place had become a lively, enthusiastic party! As I was leaving, the bartender smiled and told me, "You got things started off." That was a particularly memorable moment.
What makes Off the Wagon special is its unpredictability. The audience changes, the requests change, and the musicians respond with creativity and enthusiasm. You never quite know what will happen next, and that's part of the magic.
If you're visiting Asheville and enjoy live music, audience participation, and an atmosphere that can turn an ordinary evening into an unforgettable experience, I highly recommend Off the Wagon.
Five stars! Terrific musicians, an interactive atmosphere, and some of the most fun I've had at a piano bar. I'll definitely return whenever I'm in Asheville!
