    Homes By Gerbus

    (1 review)

I first reached out to Alan Gerbus on December 2nd, 2021. As of tomorrow, we have been in our new…read morehome for 8 weeks. Alan was one of of the many builders I contacted. Over the past two years he and his employees have helped us find a lot, design and build our home. There have been ups and downs, but the one constant was the fact that Gerbus cares about their clients, and about building amazing homes. Every single step of the way we were treated like we were valued. Whenever anything unexpected came up, there was Alan with a smile and an answer. Gerbus always took the high road, and did what was right. After 2 years of this crazy process I would gladly go through it all again - but only with Gerbus. But how to be sure yourself? Simple - ask any subcontractor that works with them. They will have nothing but praise because they are treated right by Gerbus. Gerbus is respected - and that is the ideal situation if you want a well built home. I would love to balance this review by listing negatives, but honestly I've yet to find them. Yes, not every contractor was a good choice (especially those I hired against the advice of Gerbus) but Gerbus made it right every single time. We now consider these people friends of the family. The entire team (specifically Alan, Nate, Nick, Phil, Shelley and more!) has our thanks, and an open invitation to dinner!

Roys Home Improvements - Basement remodel

    Roys Home Improvements

    (7 reviews)

Save yourself a huge headache and steer clear of Roy's Home Improvements!…read more If I could give Kevin Roy less than one-star I would. He was bad news from the very first day that the job started. Completely unreliable! We hired him because he was recommended on the Neighborhood Site. We thought, incorrectly, that this would be a good venue to find a good, trusted, local contractor. After experiencing his work ethic first-hand, we now believe that those recommendations on the Neighborhood Site were not legitimate, but were "plants" from family and friends. His one-star Yelp and BBB reviews were a whole different story and were almost identical to our own experience with Kevin Roy. There weren't any positive reviews on either site. When my husband asked him to explain the Yelp review, we thought his explanation could be plausible. He didn't like being asked about it, though, and answered the question defensively, like a wounded child. We didn't know about the BBB review until later. Basically, Yelp and the BBB review say the same thing. They both had the same experience with him that we are having. Since then, we have discovered three more one-star Yelp reviews. They are under a different heading that you have to click onto near the bottom of the page. This is it: "3 other reviews that are not currently recommended" We wish we had seen them before hiring him and saved ourselves a month full of anxiety. Kevin NEVER showed up at the time he said he would. Not once. I cannot count how many times my husband sat all day waiting for him to show up to work and he never showed up at all. Most of the time he didn't even contact us. Or, if he did contact us it was conveniently too late for him to do any work that day. His usual excuse for the "no call-no show" days was that "he fell asleep and didn't wake up until 10:30 pm...or 9:00...or 6:30...or..." Despite this excuse being used regularly, buying an alarm clock never seemed to occur to him. As a business owner, I have never witnessed another business owner be so cavalier and uncaring about his business reputation. He started with a small job that should have taken a week. Four weeks later it still isn't done and it's more than obvious he has no intention of returning to finish it. He stopped returning our text's so my husband asked him to call and talk to us, instead. He never called. He never has told us what is going on with him concerning our project. He just disappeared. In four weeks we think we've heard just about every fib in the book but these are the tallest of the tall tales: #1. His adult son had a "near-fatal car accident" (to show compassion and understanding we told him to come to work at noon so that he could have personal time in the morning with his son) He STILL came to work late every day, IF he showed up at all. #2. An employee of his, while on their way to the job one morning, got in a fight at a Speedway gas station; cops were called and Kevin's employee was hauled off to jail. Naturally, Kevin was hours late that day. #3. He hit his head on something at his shop and was knocked out, only to be found lying unconscious on the ground by a neighbor. He went to the hospital and had a concussion...blah...blah...blah. His wife didn't want him to work so she erased all his text's and phone messages. This, of course, is a good reason to keep us "on the hook." (His wife erased his messages.) #4. His mother-in-law died. #5. His mother has his keys in her car and she's in Cincinnati at a doctor's appointment, so he has to go and find her and get his keys and he would be to the job after that. Of course, he never showed up. The next day was exactly the same story. His lies are so elaborate and fall so easily off his tongue that he would probably get away with them if he didn't have so many of these life-altering events happen to him in such a short period of time. The latest chapter in this saga: We hadn't heard anything from him in over a week. My husband found out where he lived and went over to his house to talk to him. "Mr. Concussion" was outside working in his yard looking perfectly healthy. He told my husband that he felt fine and would be over to our house in an hour to do the remaining tasks. He never showed up. At the end, we only wanted him to finish the small job he started 4-weeks ago, and fix the electrical outlets that he hooked up incorrectly that now don't work at all. He refused to come unless we gave him more money even though we already paid him upfront and in-full. Big mistake! Thank goodness we didn't give him a lot of additional funds for the future work we wanted to give him before we realized what "bad news" he is. We do not think we would have gotten any of it back. Last night Kevin Roy texted my husband and said he would be at our house this morning at 9:00 to finish up. Then, at 11:30 am he texted and said he was on his way. Wouldn't you know it? He never showed up at all. This guy has absolutely no shame!

DO NOT HIRE KEVIN ROY / ROY'S HOME IMPROVEMENTS…read more Kevin Roy came to our house to give us an estimate on an outdoor fence/stairs project. We chose to move forward with him and agreed on a date to start the project. Kevin requested a deposit on the project for materials up front. Making this down payment was in hindsight a huge mistake. Kevin Roy did not show up for two different start dates, providing different excuses that may or may not be true both times. The second time he canceled, were assured that he would contact us the next week, but this did not happen. When we reached out later in the week, we were met with more lies that conflicted with information he put on his Facebook pages. Eventually, Kevin Roy agreed to return the materials he "purchased," but you guessed it - he didn't show up. Again, there is no proof he actually purchased anything. We have now reached a point where he will not respond to our texts and calls. To put it bluntly, Kevin Roy stole from us. He accepted money from us for a project, yet we have not received any materials, services, or refund at this point. I don't know what else to call this other than STEALING. DO NOT HIRE THIS "CONTRACTOR."
