Seems like a nice mom and pop place with Argentinian food. I only went there because I heard that they have meat empanadas. They had 5-6 different empanadas on display along with quiches. Apparently all are hand-made creations. I bought 3 empanadas. I loved the ham and cheese. The chicken was decent but didn't really like the beef. It had green olive in it. Overall, they were a little smaller than I expected since they were all about the size of child's fist with the spinach being not much bigger than a baby's fist.

So I was in a mood to have a light lunch and found this place on Yelp!. One can easily miss this place (like I did driving by twice!) since it's almost blends in with the neighborhood homes!. I walked in and was greeted by all and got help from Pablo in what's good to order. The food is all fresh and home made. I ordered a dozen empanadas and the Pasta Frola de Membrillo to go. The empanadas are delicious especially the chicken and ground beef. You would need more than two to fill you up though. The jam based pasta frola de membrillo is just right with a cup of coffee. It's not too sweet unlike other pies. The food is all fresh and light!. Would definitely recommend!.

The melted cheese as you cut into the pie

We only discovered this place two weeks ago, we tried the savory vegetarian pies: spinach and zucchini and also the sweet quince pie. We loved the homey ambiance (feels like entering a home!), greeted by the lovely friendly family. Everything is homemade, I recommend you coming here for a light but fulfilling bite, they have pizza and Yerba mate tea too. All tasted so good, the pies were seasoned lightly (not too sweet or savory) which we greatly appreciated. Today, we went again to get a large size of the quince pie to bring for a pot luck, everybody enjoyed it . So happy to have this cafe in our neighborhood!

And what better place than the shop I used to go to back in the 90's. Now I've never been to the woodlands location before. It's in that waterway district near the mall and so parking was sure to be a B. But this being thanksgiving week it actually wasn't half bad. The shop is smaller than the Richmond location. But that's just more goodness compressed into a TLP. There are no birthday specials alas. But they did have some free samples of tiramisu. It was good but I had to get my favorites. J's birthday cake and the Big O. The birthday cake is thicker like brownie than some of the other chocolate cakes. I can't describe the frosting this go around because my punk kid at all the frosting off it while my attention was focused on the Big O. But the cake part was moist. As for the Big O it was Ooooohhh. No When Harry Met Sally diner scene experience. But it was F'n awesome. Staff was super helpful and nice. Wanted to eat more but my blood sugar wouldn't tolerate it.

There were a small set of tables to sit inside and enjoy your treats if you wanted to. We got a variety of things to share, tres leches (this is okay, a little sweet and pretty standard), tiramisu, pecan pie bar (delicious but crumbly/messy to eat), Oreo truffles and confetti truffles (my nieces and nephew absolutely loved these)! It was pretty pricey, but always happy to support local businesses!

If you're looking for something lighter they do have simple crepes just with fruit toppings and your choice of Nutella syrup or dulce de leche. They also offer breakfast favorites on brioche buns. Black Walnut uses the Pay Before Eating concept which I have mixed feelings about. It makes me feel like I'm at a fast food place but the food is anything but the usual stuff most fast food places serve and in all my times eating here the food has been very good. It just seems odd to order at the counter and pay first. I think the idea is that it is faster for staff, a server will bring you your food and refill drinks. And on the plus side, you don't have to try to get the attention of your server when you are done to get a check and pay.; you just get up and leave. I kind of wonder if their servers get the same kind of tips as they would if you paid at the end. OK, about our lunch. It was very good. We shared the Spinach and Artichoke Dip, very creamy with good flavors. They offer a $12 lunch special with 5 or 6 choices, a main and one side. Not bad for $12 but we opted to order something from the main selections. My wife ordered the Pot Roast Grilled Cheese sandwich which was very good, and it came with a small salad and cup of soup so was quite filling. The pot roast was super tender! I ended up getting the Fish Tacos, they use mahi mahi and the fish was moist and tender. We also split a side of their sweet potato fries because they are just so darn good. It was a good lunch and we left feeling quite full. We will come back the next time were are in The Woodlands.

As it was only 9 in the morning, we opted for breakfast at First Watch which is right around the corner from Methodist Hospital's professional building. The staff is super friendly and we were met with the door being opened for us and a hearty welcome from the front counter staff. We were quickly whisked away to our table and then greeted by the nice young lady that would be our server; she came armed with 2 hefty coffee mugs and a carafe of fresh hot coffee. I had coffee, my wife was already caffeinated for the day so she ordered an orange juice. The juice quickly arrived and it wasn't one of those tiny 4 oz juice glasses but a full size 16 ounce one and my wife tasted it and said, "that really is fresh squeezed juice!" We ordered breakfast, we were both hungry. My wife had the classic breakfast of scramble eggs, bacon, sauteed potatoes, whole grain toast and a delicious jam which she thought had berries of some kind but wasn't sure which ones. I had the Power Breakfast Bowl, which had protein-packed quinoa, Italian sausage, house-roasted tomatoes and cremini mushrooms, kale, Parmesan, lemon white balsamic dressing, EVOO and two basted cage-free eggs. I also had a side order of the sauteed potatoes. The food was served and everything was very nice. The only thing I would find a bit of fault with that both my wife and I agreed that the potatoes were very salty. The second thing is the chairs are hard wooden ones and after 30 minutes or so I was longing for a cushion for my tush to sit on. The restaurant is clean and brightly lit, bathroom was very clean and well maintained. We soon finished and got our check and paid and were on our way home with full tummies!

Unfortunately we did not find this place good enough to recommend or even to come back. We ordered a dozen empanadas, we found the salteña ones full of flavor but we did not like the flavor. We also disliked that the grease was dripping. The salteña a cuchillo had the same flavor as the salteña to my palate, but the salteña a cuchillo has pieces of potato which in my opinion doesn't go great in such a small empanada. I ordered the mushroom with cheese and it was freezing cold inside. It was so small there was no point in saying anything. The spinach and cheese was flavorless. We tried ordering the salad with skirt but it turns out their meat for the salad is premade and it had to be well done, same for a sandwich. My husband does not like well done steak. I never once saw any raw meat on their grill or smelled meat being cooked. Maybe all their meats are precooked. I did not like the flavor of their chimichurri either, that's what I was mostly excited about because I love chimichurri, but no. We were disappointed and sadly will not come back.
