Seems like a nice mom and pop place with Argentinian food. I only went there because I heard that they have meat empanadas. They had 5-6 different empanadas on display along with quiches. Apparently all are hand-made creations. I bought 3 empanadas. I loved the ham and cheese. The chicken was decent but didn't really like the beef. It had green olive in it. Overall, they were a little smaller than I expected since they were all about the size of child's fist with the spinach being not much bigger than a baby's fist.

So I was in a mood to have a light lunch and found this place on Yelp!. One can easily miss this place (like I did driving by twice!) since it's almost blends in with the neighborhood homes!. I walked in and was greeted by all and got help from Pablo in what's good to order. The food is all fresh and home made. I ordered a dozen empanadas and the Pasta Frola de Membrillo to go. The empanadas are delicious especially the chicken and ground beef. You would need more than two to fill you up though. The jam based pasta frola de membrillo is just right with a cup of coffee. It's not too sweet unlike other pies. The food is all fresh and light!. Would definitely recommend!.

My other review disappeared. I hope I can relate the awesomeness of this little mom and pop restaurant hidden on the back street of Oakridge Drive on the side of The Woodlands. When I first walked in I smelled such warm savory smells of food cooking. They make their own Argentinian empanadas and variety of quiche. These foods have such incredible flavors and mellow spices. I could eat these on a weekly basis. Everything is made from scratch and done with quality ingredients. They also have Argentinian frozen pizzas which have the most incredible cheeses and quality meats. They don't last long and they don't taste like they were ever frozen when I baked mine. They have a grocery section of their countries foods. There is also a serene dining area to eat in. Definitely worth a visit. They close at 6pm on weekdays and 2pm Saturday. Yelp Review #283

Black Walnut uses the Pay Before Eating concept which I have mixed feelings about. It makes me feel like I'm at a fast food place but the food is anything but the usual stuff most fast food places serve and in all my times eating here the food has been very good. It just seems odd to order at the counter and pay first. I think the idea is that it is faster for staff, a server will bring you your food and refill drinks. And on the plus side, you don't have to try to get the attention of your server when you are done to get a check and pay.; you just get up and leave. I kind of wonder if their servers get the same kind of tips as they would if you paid at the end. OK, about our lunch. It was very good. We shared the Spinach and Artichoke Dip, very creamy with good flavors. They offer a $12 lunch special with 5 or 6 choices, a main and one side. Not bad for $12 but we opted to order something from the main selections. My wife ordered the Pot Roast Grilled Cheese sandwich which was very good, and it came with a small salad and cup of soup so was quite filling. The pot roast was super tender! I ended up getting the Fish Tacos, they use mahi mahi and the fish was moist and tender. We also split a side of their sweet potato fries because they are just so darn good. It was a good lunch and we left feeling quite full. We will come back the next time were are in The Woodlands.

The space was bright, clean, and had that easy brunch energy that makes you want to linger just a little longer. The food? Solid. The potatoes were crispy on the outside, soft on the inside (as they should be), and the eggs were fluffy and flavorful without being drowned in nonsense. As it was only 9 in the morning, we opted for breakfast at First Watch which is right around the corner from Methodist Hospital's professional building. The staff is super friendly and we were met with the door being opened for us and a hearty welcome from the front counter staff. We were quickly whisked away to our table and then greeted by the nice young lady that would be our server; she came armed with 2 hefty coffee mugs and a carafe of fresh hot coffee. I had coffee, my wife was already caffeinated for the day so she ordered an orange juice. The juice quickly arrived and it wasn't one of those tiny 4 oz juice glasses but a full size 16 ounce one and my wife tasted it and said, "that really is fresh squeezed juice!" We ordered breakfast, we were both hungry. My wife had the classic breakfast of scramble eggs, bacon, sauteed potatoes, whole grain toast and a delicious jam which she thought had berries of some kind but wasn't sure which ones. I had the Power Breakfast Bowl, which had protein-packed quinoa, Italian sausage, house-roasted tomatoes and cremini mushrooms, kale, Parmesan, lemon white balsamic dressing, EVOO and two basted cage-free eggs. I also had a side order of the sauteed potatoes. The food was served and everything was very nice. The only thing I would find a bit of fault with that both my wife and I agreed that the potatoes were very salty. The second thing is the chairs are hard wooden ones and after 30 minutes or so I was longing for a cushion for my tush to sit on. The restaurant is clean and brightly lit, bathroom was very clean and well maintained. We soon finished and got our check and paid and were on our way home with full tummies!

We didn't get to try a lot of items on their menu so my impression is limited to what we ordered. For appetizers, we had a variety of empanadas (spicy ground beef, chicken chipotle, italian, fugazetta). All are very tasty and probably one of the best items they have. The chimichurri that comes with them is a stand-out. We had the platter of mixed meats (parrillada che gaucho) that included 3 kinds of sausages, chicken breast, sweetbread, short rib, flank and skirt steaks. The sausages were good, the chicken was standard grilled chicken breast and the beef cuts were pretty tough (our knives had a really hard time cutting through them). Again, the chimichurri is the star and makes the meats much better. It came with 2 sides so we chose asparagus and fries tossed in garlic+parsley. For dessert, we had an apple maple empanada and a banana dulce de leche empanada with ice cream. Both are delicious but that banana one is a must-try. Fabulous.

Unfortunately we did not find this place good enough to recommend or even to come back. We ordered a dozen empanadas, we found the salteña ones full of flavor but we did not like the flavor. We also disliked that the grease was dripping. The salteña a cuchillo had the same flavor as the salteña to my palate, but the salteña a cuchillo has pieces of potato which in my opinion doesn't go great in such a small empanada. I ordered the mushroom with cheese and it was freezing cold inside. It was so small there was no point in saying anything. The spinach and cheese was flavorless. We tried ordering the salad with skirt but it turns out their meat for the salad is premade and it had to be well done, same for a sandwich. My husband does not like well done steak. I never once saw any raw meat on their grill or smelled meat being cooked. Maybe all their meats are precooked. I did not like the flavor of their chimichurri either, that's what I was mostly excited about because I love chimichurri, but no. We were disappointed and sadly will not come back. The precooked meat is difficult to overcome!
